The Panthers announced Friday that John Fox and his coaching staff will not be retained for 2011.According to Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer, Fox met with owner Jerry Richardson and was informed he intends for "both sides to move in different directions." Fox was the ultimate lame duck in 2010, just finishing out the string in the last year of his contract with the worst football team in the league. The Panthers are expected to target a young, cheap replacement. Fox should land on his feet as a defensive coordinator at the very least. He went 73-70 in nine seasons, guiding Carolina to its lone Super Bowl in 2003.
As a Panther homer, like to see Meeks stay on board and get a Offense guy. Gonna be interesting....

Slightly off topic, looking for a panthers fan's opinion. Do you think they will keep Clausen or draft a QB?

I've said this in other threads, I'd be SHOCKED and AMAZED if a new regime comes in, watches all the film, and somehow believes Clausen is a franchise QB. He was AWFUL this year. I think without a doubt they take Luck with the first pick in the draft.

You have to believe everyone on that squad will be playing for their jobs this Sunday. No one is safe not even Stewart. Hopefully they rise to the occasion and win one for Foxy.

 In college I thought he had 'it' to play at the nfl level. He actualy hasn't played bad the last 4-5 games. But that team is zeus awful from on both lines, and the defense is aging.i love how guys who 10 years ago would have never even played a snap are now' no good'. If I'm the panthers I'm trading the one and drafting OL/DL/LB/S , especially sincethey shipped their 2.1 (33) pick to the pats for armanti edwards

Not Panthers fan. BUT it's been my assumption all along that they would do both.
They are in a bit of a pickle if Luck doesn't come out though aren't they? It seems there are a lot more questions with Newton, Locker and Mallet. Further, they don't have a 2nd round pick. Do they go for Green or Failey if Luck doesn't declare?

I really dread if the Panthers draft Newton but it could very well head that way if Luck doesnt come out. Newton is one Heisman trophy winning qb that I think takes the next step to the NFL level in a big way. Hopefully Carrolina sleeps on him.

This from walterfootball.com and his most recent mock draft:I can't believe I'm putting Cam Newton this high either. Newton's stock is on the rise in the wake of an impressive comeback at Alabama and a great performance in the SEC Championship; even the talking heads on ESPN seem to agree that Arizona taking Newton in the top five is a good idea. The Cam Newton Hype Train is coming. If Newton beats Oregon in one of the two national championships this January, some team will probably make a desperate reach. Many consider Newton unprepared to play in the NFL, but there's no denying that he possesses tremendous upside with a big arm and mobility. He's also a winner with great intangibles (see McCoy, Colt). Some front office will talk themselves into believing Newton is the next multi-threat quarterback, hoping that they can duplicate what the Eagles have right now. With a new coaching regime in San Francisco. Mike Singletary has already been fired, so the 49ers will be targeting a quarterback early in the 2011 NFL Draft. They'll take whomever they like best between Newton, Ryan Mallett and Jake Locker.

Hiring Jim Harbaugh might be fruitful, but as I understand the way things work in Carolina, ownership will not pay top dollar for a coach.

Well, they paid Fox $3m a year which last year was #10 for all coaches, so it's not like they don't pay. It's just a matter of what JR wants to do to put butts in the seats. If he goes cheap, he's going to lose a lot of PSL owners and find lots of empty seats at the stadium.

How does accepting money as a college athlete get one's "intangibles" compared to Colt McCoy?
Nothing is proven that Newton or his father actually accepted money. Bogus remark unless you can back it. The NCAA has ruled that he was and remains eligible so put it to bed.

OJ didn't kill anyone either, right?

It would utterly boggle my mind if the Panthers didnt at least try and sign Jim Harbourgh. I think the Panthers would be in a good position because they are in the NFC, close to Baltimore and obviously have the inside track on Luck. Why would Harbough come here? So please Hurney dont screw this up.

You cant be serious? OJ was guilty and the evidence was there to prove that. He walked because of his brilliant Lawyer playing the race card to the Jury. Race trumps murder in LA.

 good comeback with the OJ quote. Same story both did it.

Harbaugh is a virtual lock to be coaching at the University of Michigan next year.

Well if this is true, then no way Cowher ends up here which I was really thinking might happen given his personal situation.

I probably need to update my internal list of cheap owners.

To say that the NCAA has not "proven" anything against Newton is comparable to pointing out that the North Korean Board of Elections has verified that Kim Jong-il received 100% of the popular vote. The NCAA has become an absolute joke. (See Terrelle Pryor playing in the Sugar Bowl and UNC being allowed to play in the Music City Bowl)

Fox was not an underpaid coach.
The cheapness comes from Richardson not wanting to pay for a quality product with a looming lockout. He probably won't even hire a coach until it's obvious a deal is going to be signed. He's in full lockout mode.

Where is this coming from? I thought his goal was to coach in the NFL. Why would he take on a rebuilding project? By that I mean he has to cycle out the spread option players.

Not true, I bet there is a coach in place within 2 weeks from today. It does no benefit to the franchise to not have a coach. He is not stupid.

Panthers interviewing Ron Rivera

Posted by Mike Florio on January 2, 2011, 7:06 PM EST

After the Chargers shut down the Colts and quarterback Peyton Manning earlier this year, we suggested that any team in the AFC South considering a new coach should consider Chargers defensive coordinator Ron Rivera.

As it turns out, a team in the NFC South will be giving him a look-see.

Per a league source, the Carolina Panthers will interview Rivera.

The Bears’ defensive coordinator during their Super Bowl season of 2006, Rivera had said that he won’t consider any opportunities until the Chargers’ season ends. But that declaration came at a time when it appeared that the Chargers season would extend beyond Week 17.

So the bad news for the Chargers could be good news for Rivera, which may be even more bad news for the Chargers.

The Panthers recently announced that eight-year coach John Fox and his staff will not be returning in 2011. Fox’s contract ran through the 2010 season.

Great another defensive coach. :lmao: I pray this is all semantics until harbourghs season is over. Why in the world would they not at least talk to the guy?

On ESPN today, they said the chance of Harbaugh to Michigan are not good. On another note, Richarson spoke to the media today....CHARLOTTE, NC - His silence has been broken.Carolina Panthers majority owner Jerry Richardson spoke to the media Tuesday, alongside team president Danny Morrison and general manager Marty Hurney.Richardson covered several topics, including the team's draft status, their coaching situation and the CBA.Richardson expressed his frustration with John Fox and why he wasn't renewed; saying, "we had 3 winning seasons in 9 years." He also addressed being labeled as a "cheap owner." Richardson said the team spent more than $ 11 million dollars on the former coaching staff and the Panthers had the "5th highest payroll for coaches." According to Richardson, "not willing to pay high dollar for a coach is false." However, when asked about Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh, Richardson only responded, “I'd be cordial to him.”In regards to next April's NFL Draft, it appears Carolina will be keeping the number one pick. Many draft analysts have said the obvious top selection appears to be Stanford QB Andrew Luck. Richardson said, "I think it would be somewhat unusual for us to trade down in this particular case."The owner also addressed the ongoing NFL labor negotiations between the owners and players. Speaking about the 32 owners going into CBA negotiations, Richardson said, "I would say we're the most united we have been."

He is either bluffing about not talking or thinking about Harbough as his coach or he has lost his mind. So he thinks Ryan, Perry or Ron Riveria is the answer? WTF am I missing?

Jerry is a low key guy. He doesn't handle negotiations through the press. Also, discussing Harbaugh might turn away other candidates.Obviously they'll say they are keeping the number one pick to improve any potential offers.

Man I hope you are right.Although there is just no way they deal that pick unless Luck pulls a Elway or Manning. Simply no way. There are not enough picks to make it worth trading for a franchise qb.

I didn't get to watch as much of the games this year as I'd have liked to, but I'm not convinced all the blame goes to Clausen. He had little protection, and there were a number of passes I saw which looked good but were dropped by receivers. Somehow despite the Luck hype I'm thinking they need to address their lines more, as well as pick up some more playmakers to catch those balls.

Actually been hoping for two years now that it's Cowher who's primed to take over the team. :lmao:

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- If Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck decides to enter the 2011 draft, the Carolina Panthers will take him, two high-ranking team officials said Tuesday.

The team officials said they wouldn't even consider trading down in the draft if Luck is available. There has been some speculation that Luck and Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh could be a package deal. But in a press conference Tuesday to discuss the coaching search, Carolina owner Jerry Richardson said the team has not had any contact with Harbaugh. The team officials said they don't expect that to change.
