Clauson to Lafell for a big gain.

JPP with pressure, Clausen throws while being knocked backwards. Boley INT for TD.

Edward Brown in the backfield to cause Eli to throw incomplete.

Complete to Nicks for about 13yds.

Bradshaw for 17yds on good blocking.

Ballard makes the 1st TE reception for 7.

Nicks overthrown on deep pass on 3rd and 3.

Deangelo nifty run for 15.

My feed must be lagging went from Deangelo's run to Giants back on offense and the game tied.

oof Giants punt coverage doesn't show improvement, allows a big return. And another one.

Panthers defense is doing a good job preventing the Giants from moving the ball.

Newton starts the 2nd Q for the Panthers. Rolls out and 11yds to Olsen.

Incomplete on deep ball to Olsen. Quite a few targets to Olsen, he's gotta be happy to be out of Chicago.

Cruz with a drop. He's been doing that in camp too.

Tyens wide left on the 30 something yard FG.

Another target to a TE by the Panthers offense. big gain. Probably would have been to Olsen if it were regular season.

1st Half MVPs for each team:

Panthers:

Greg Olsen

Panthers defense 1st & 2nd stringers (And they were missing 2 or 3 of their starting LBs, and 1 DE)

Cam Newton

Giants:

Jason Pierre Paul

That's it just one guy for the Giants. :yucky:

Cam was 5 for 13, not sure I could call that MVP worthy, but I am hopeful.. He had some nice moments as well..

Wow, Cam Newton can throw on hell of an accurate deep ball. This kid looks legit.
Yep. I don't think he's the next J. Russell or Vince Young. Looks like Panthers made a good pick. I don't watch College ball much, so it's the 1st time I've seen him.Clausen did better after the pick, but where he played ok, it's obvious that Cam brings more. Gonna be interesting seeing the Panthers with Smithy Smurf out there.

That's why he's behind the several defensive players. Cam did well for his 1st time out there and the Giants had the starting Def out there on his 1st series.

most of his pass attempts, and incomplete passes came against second team d though...

Actually the CAts were missing all 3 starting LBs, both starting CBs, and both DEs.

As did the drops. Most encouraging thing is that he isn't making bad decisions.Found it interesting that even his "touch" passes down field look like roped spirals.

Tynes gets hit in the knee, and is on the ground, don't know if he's hurt or upset about the blocked field goal. Ok he's back up, jogged off.

Now he's limping to the locker room.

The Giants have not improved special teams at all....they are horrible

JPP was abusing Jordan Gross tonight

The offense needs a lot more work

Newton looked pretty good for his 1st time out. Seemed like he only threw to his 1st read but he did show some really good arm strength

The Panthers are deep at RB

Their TE's looked good as well

A couple quick thoughts (from a Panthers fan perspective)

- Cam Newton looked strong in his drive with the first team against the Giants 1st string. He looked a little shaky with the second string, but almost all of the Panthers non-starting O-line is young...which caused a lot of pressure. From what I've read, Cam was instructed to not rely on running at all, so that certainly affected his ability to turn some plays around. He looked really confident.

- Jimmy Clausen looked pretty good after the pick six. The problem is that he still threw a pick six. It was a bad read that shows that he is still not ready to be a starting QB in the NFL. While I think he has the potential to be a quality player, I think that John Fox and the Panthers as a whole did him a disservice by allowing him to start so quickly in an already lost season. I think that he may not truly develop until the Panthers release him in a year or two and he goes to learn behind a quality QB. With all of that said, the TD pass to Olsen was very nice, and he looked much better than last season.

- Greg Olsen was a beast, and I think that this is something that will be a trend for this season. I've been talking about him as a fantasy steal for weeks, and I fear that this game may have just made my hidden piece of information public knowledge. He was going as TE22...but I think there is no doubt he'll be a top 10 guy this season.

- It's amazing what having a coach that doesn't hate you will do for you. Armanti Edwards looked great in the punt return game and as a receiver. The word out of Carolina is that they are looking to get him involved in a number of different areas, including the wildcat. As an App State grad, I knew that he was better than John Fox allowed him to be.

- People question why the Panthers re-signed Deangelo, but it's hard to question his ability. While Stewart could certainly function fine as the lead back on the team, he never practices because of assorted injuries, which is concerning. While Mike Goodson has a lot of ability, I will not feel comfortable in anything less than a third running back until he can hold onto the ball. He seems to fumble on about 1/4 of his carries.

- It's hard to get a huge read on the defense as a whole, because most of the eventual regular season starters didn't play. That makes it even more impressive that they pretty much controlled the Giants for a majority of the game. I have no issues at all with the defense.

I was impressed with the strides a young team made with a new offense, new defense, new coach and several starters out. It's a testament to hard work.

Jimmy looked decent after the pick but there was still the pick. I think Cam should have had several more completions, guys were dropping a lot of catchable balls out there. That may be a function of how hard he throws and not having the practice time to get used to it. Anderson looked good as well. I feel much better about QBs today than I did this time last year.

Everyone keeps asking who the number two receiver on this team is. I think it's Olsen. I have been hearing Kealoha Pilares was turning heads in practice now we know why. Might be a late round steal there, time will tell.

Defense was excellent especially given the missing starters. They really controlled the tempo and they were everywhere. Flying to the ball and gang tackling. Nice blitzes by the backup linebackers. Some guys amongst the DBs made cases for themselves. Stanford and Burnley especially. Senn was big on defense and special teams. Williams really showed out amongst the linebackers I thought.

Armanti is a different player this year. They say he worked with Moose on receiving, Jason Baker on punts and got coaching from a former NFL returner. He obviously benefited from that. He is exciting with the ball and I can't help but think of him as a having the potential to really be a big part of the offense here. Special teams in general looked good I thought.

Of course it's only week one of the preseason and we have many miles still to go. But there seems to be reason for hope of a turnaround in Pantherland.

Edwards has definitely improved, and the staff change has helped with that, but also Moose worked with Edwards all summer to help him improve in his game. I'd like to see Moose join the staff.I am glad that DeAngelo was re-signed, and as for Stewart never practicing due to injuries, he is finally healthy, and he has been practicing every day in camp. Fantasy wise people don't like RBBC, but in real life it's great for teams to have tandem backs, and I think the Panthers are very fortunate to have two great backs that enjoy sharing the ball with each other.

Giants perspective ... I only watched though most of the 3rd quarter

Offense

QB - Eli looked like crap with 2 big overthrows to wide open receivers

Sage Rosenfells looked pretty good I would think he is leading the BU job ...Carr didn't play

RB - Jacobs and Bradshaw looked good but the rest looked like crap ... I was very disappointed that Hynoski was not with the 1st team

Bear Poscoe is to slow at fullback and can't stay ahead of the RBs

TEs - looked ok ... I like Poscoe much better here and 3 different TEs caught passes for a total of 6 catches. All 3 are 270 plus lbs.

Beckum didn't play ... He is probably their best receiving TE but listening to him talk he does not seem very confident.

WRs - Nicks looked very good and Hixon looks like he is wrapping up the wr3 job. Don't think Manningham played. I thought Cruz looked OK he made a tough catch while getting hit. Jernigan looks scared.

OL - God awful ... This was the biggest disappointment ... I know they had a lot of change on the line but they got 2 years younger and 5 lbs bigger on average so I thought they would be much better than this. Left Side and Middle of the line looked like they were made of paper. Right side looked better on big runs by Jacobs and Bradshaw.

Defense

Line - Looked good ... Pierre Paul looks ridiculous and Canty looked very good. Don't know who Alex Hall is but he looked pretty good especially on his sack of Newton. He's only 240 lbs though

LBs - Looked much better than expected Boley was very good and Goff looked good. Greg Jones looked very good on Special teams and he has the look of a MLB

DBs - As disappointing as the OL ... the Safties and Corners absolutely sucked. They couldn't cover or tackle - Terrell Thomas looked like a pee wee trying to tackle Jonathan Stewart. Tyler Sash looked terrible on his first few plays missing tackles and coverage then getting beat for TD to Olsen but he turned it around and looked much better from there on out.

Special Teams - DISASTER - ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE !!! Jernigan has showed nothing at all yet. He looks terrified and has yet to make a single move once he has the ball. Punting - Dodge has to go (no hang time at all on punts. Filed Goals 1 of 4 (though 2 were 50 plus) ... Coverage excruciatingly bad !!!!!

Coaching ... Team looked completely unprepared ... Coverage Team coaches should have 1 week to fix their problems or pack there bags ... Disgraceful.

Qimqam,

I agree with just about everything you wrote

The OL did not look good I am hoping that with more practice time under their belt that they will gel

I hope that Hynoski wins the starting FB job because I think (hope) it will make two positions (FB & TE) better. Agree that Bear is a better TE than FB.

I thought that Devin Thomas looked good at WR as well. Jerrnigan did look scared out there but he didn’t get any blocks from the special teams unit.

Sash looks good in the box but he looks like a liability in coverage. Ross looked horrible last night, I hope Price can make it back soon.

For the Panthers, that defense has the potential to be very good. You kind of have to temper your expectations a little because they were going against an offensive line that had not played together before but with that said I think there were at least 3 starters out for the Panthers….and big time guys to!

Beason, Johnson and Davis were out. If the young QB’s don’t put the defense in bad positions the Panthers defense could surprise some folks

It’s been said that a young QB’s best friend is a good TE….well Olsen is playing with a bunch of young QB’s. Olsen is going to put up good fantasy numbers this season.

Edwards did look good returning punts and I hope the guy gets a chance to show what he can do ( I live in NC) but I will tell Panther fans that the Giants special teams have sucked for years and it doesn’t look like anything has changed so they might not be the best team to judge Edwards performance against

Redskins released Shayne Graham this morning ... I wouldn't be surprised to see the Giants snatch him up immediately

good point. I was speaking more from a historical perspective, but it should definitely be noted that he's been practicing this offseason.

I know it is one game,1st one of preseason, but D. Williams looked sharp..he might be grossly undervalued at his current ADP, especially if J. Stewart gets hurt..

if this game was any indication, JPP is going to be a sack monster this season, someone that IDP leagues should consider watching in preseason.

Giants defense is going to give up a lot of big plays thru the air..they can't defend the pass...Nicks was wide open on a few routes that Eli just overthrew..once that clicks, that combo is going to be lethal.

Bradshaw looked strong, ran with authority...

Clausen looked like crap, despite the TD drive he looked like a deer in the headlights out there.
