Here is a link to the thread where I review this year's playoff clubs and go into more detail about what these numbers mean:

http://forums.footballguys.com/forum/index...opic=213704&hl=

"magic number" rankings:

Seahawks (2nd offense, 4th defense) 2+4 = 6

Panthers (10th offense, 5th defense) 10+5 = 15

Efficiencies:

sea 13.21 O, 18.73 D

car 13.62 O, 17.01 D

Comments:

The Sehawks had the best magic number in the NFC. The Panthers had the second-best number. Both would be considered legitimate super bowl contenders because their magic number was below 20.

Turning to the efficiencies, the Seahawks are better on offense and defense than the Panthers. Teams better on both sides of the ball in this round or in the super bowl are 19-2 since 1990. The two losses were the 1998 Vikings to the Falcons and the 2003 Eagles to the Panthers - led by John Fox, who is still coaching the Panthers today.

The system tells us to take the Seahawks. However, note that John Fox is 5-1 lifetime in postseason as a head coach. His only loss was to Belichick who is 11-2. And Fox almost won that game, too. Fox has beaten that (as of now) 19-2 before. If he beats it again, I think it really elevates him as a head coach in the NFL.

Good stuff. John Fox is no Chuck Norris or Joe Gibbs but he's a hell of a coach for sure. Holmgren has won a Super Bowl BTW.

No.

Carolina will be on their 3rd road game and without their starting RB. Assuming SA is healthy, I'd be taking Seattle minus the points.
Both Pittsburgh and Carolina are on their third road games. I am a Seahawks fan and I don't bet the line in that game, but I'm taking the Broncos for this reason and a few others. Panthers are a great team, but without those two guys, on the road, and very inconsistent week to week throughout the season I wouldn't be betting that game. But then again, I've made a pile of $ on them the past two weeks and did the same when they beat the Eagles two years ago.

Paging John Fox...the NFL has kindly requested that you return the smoke and mirrors. After a hard fought victory the Panthers will limp onto a plane to trek across the county to face a Seahawk team that's well rested and cruised in their first playoff game. The Cat's running game is crippled with the lost of Foster and will have to rely on a 3rd string back. Add to that the injury of one of the most feared defensive linemen in the league and we're looking at a blowout. I'd run thru a matchup of the players by position, but they would all favor the Seahawks save the WR1 position which would be a slight advantage to the Panthers. Surely the Seahawks will have seen enough film to cover Smith. The superiority of the Seattle offense doesn't merit further discussion. I would have considered the defenses about equal until I saw Rex freaking Grossman march up and down the field at will with WRs that pail in comparsion to what Seattle has.History alone will tell you that a team doesn't win four consecutive must win games. No team has ever beaten three division winners as a wildcard to advance to the Super Bowl. When you add up the league's MVP + Walter Jones + a huge home field advantage to the equation, you better make sure the hotline to your man is open to load up on Seattle. Early line is +4.5...who scheduled Christmas in January this year?Final Score: SEATTLE 38, CAROLINA 17

Goings looked just as impressive as foster IMO in this game.
Yeah but with no credible backup to spell him it becomes hard to grind out a running game with an exhausted back. This will make the Panthers a little more one dimensional, but when Smith is your one dimension it's not so bad.

This shtick is working for you so....Reverse psychology: Panthers will crush the Seahawks 38-17. Thanks.

Seattle is in more efficient on both sides of the ball than anyone else still alive. So either they win the super bowl or that measure fails for only the third time since 1990. I think they'll win the super bowl.

Well sure, now that the Colts are out the Seahawks become favorites.Of course, the system doesn't account for the much harder schedule the Broncos rolled through while putting up very similar numbers. I also happen to think the Steelers are probably better than the Seahawks.

Interesting that there are no STUD QBs left, although all of these guys are clearly second tier (or third tier, if you want to put McNabb, Brady, Manning and Palmer on different levels).

Plummer, Roethlisberger, Delhomme and Hasselbeck are on that same level as Trent Green, Drew Brees, Marc Bulger and maybe Vick/Leftwich/Eli/Bledsoe depending on personal preference.

STOP THISIt rains a lot up here, we drink lattes, and nobody pays attention to the Seahawks. That's the way we like it. TIA.

I live in Seattle and I am a Seahawk fan but I believe that Carolina is playing the best in the NFL right now. Their defense is underrated, they fly to the ball and they have playmakers all over the field. Delhomme is, simply put, a winner. Steve Smith is the "BEST" offensive playmaker in the NFL and nobody has shown they can stop him. John Fox gets the most out of his talent and has proven that he can win the BIG game. I also believe that the Carolina Panthers are the most mentally tough team in the league. Substantiated by their 8-2 record on the road. With all that said, can they win in front of the rabid Seahawk fans? The difference will be turnovers ...... Seattle - 23 Carolina - 20

quit pretending like the Panthers arent a good team. I could go around posting so and so will CRUSH the Panthers too. You are 0-2 in your attempt however. Panthers keep it close but lose 23-17.

JLew, he's doing the reverse jinx -- he's a Panther fan. :bye:

Before this weekend, not counting the Indy game, Seattle was 7-0 at home with an average score of 30-13.They then beat the Redskins by 10.

Does anyone else think this is a great play?
Without Foster and Peppers?
What happened to Peppers? I saw he was hurt but haven't heard anything.
He hurt his shoulder, but to what extent I don't know. He didn't go back into the game after injuring it.
Left the roids back in Carolina. Hopefully the shuttle from Columbia is already in route.
Hey BnB, that's West Columbia. ;)

You'd think everyone would double, triple or quadruple team Smith to find a way to stop him, but so far no one can...
Well, he has been shut down during the year in a handful of games, so I am not sure what you are talking about.
Code:
2	CAR	NE	4 rec	34 yds	4	CAR	GB	2 rec	12 yds	10	CAR	NYJ	3 rec	34 yds	12	CAR	BUF	3 rec	55 yds	16	CAR	DAL	1 rec	18 yds
I realize the game was when he got ejected early, but can not recall which one exactly. I believe the Dallas game.

With no running game, the Panthers will be able to focus on Smith and put Trufant on him with Safety help. Limit the big plays. Look at game film of the games when Steve SMith was shut down during the year.

The Carolina D is not playing solid when you give up 21 points to the Bears.

Just wanted to chime in here...

The Panthers have their work cut out for them, but so do the Seahawks. It should be a great Championship game filled with plenty of action.

A few comments...

1. Local broadcasters are reporting Peppers will be fine for the game on Sunday (his words).

2. Former Seahawk Ken Lucas ought to have some insight on the Seahawks offense only being one year removed from the team.

3. How are the Seahawks going to stop #89? That could be the game right there.

4. It looks like Jamal Robertson will finally get his chance to really contribute in the offense - as Goings backup.

5. Can Carolina neutralize or take Alexander away from the game plan like they did Tiki Barber?

6. Carolina's alltime playoff record: 6-2, Under John Fox 5-1

Does moving this to this thread screw up the Keerok?

Alexander is going to do a JJones on Carolina and rush for 120 and 2 tds. Especially if Peppers doesn't get on the field.

Peppers is playing. With the way the inept Bears put up points on the Panthers D, I don't think it will be a problem for the #1 offense in the league. You can only hope to contain the Hawks, cause is there is no way you can stop them, they have too many weapons.

I think the key to this game is covering Steve Smith and limiting his big plays. I would like to see Trufant on him all day with over the top safety help at all times. I never want to see SS one on one with any DB.

Shaun Alexander is going to rush for 612 yards and 9 touchdowns. Hasselbeck will go 30-for-28 for 819 yards and 7 touchdowns. Steve Smith will attempt to catch his first pass and Chuck Norris will run in and roundhouse kick his head through the uprights.

I think this forecast is very realistic if Hasselbeck completes more passes than he attempts. The whole Chuck Norris thing is almost certain to happen but as a Seahawks fan I wish you would have left the safety up there for Carolina. I'm really superstitious.

On two of his passes, he throws two balls at once.

In that case if I'm a gambling man I bet the house on the -136 1/2 teaser.

Come on guys, John Kasay will at least get a field goal. Right?

I agree with Friday Frenzy. If the Bears can score 20, Seattle should be able to score at least 35.I like Washington's defense better than Carolina's and the score didn't really reflect that, that game wasn't really close.I also agree Trufant covering Smith with Boulware or even Tatupu helping out should get the job done.

Every game is different. New York Giants almost beat Seattle at Seattle, and the Giants scored 0 points against Carolina. As far as covering Steve Smith, the more people covering him will leave Drew Carter open who is actually the fastest person on Carolina's team.

Lofa Tatupu once took a karate class from Chuck Norris. He can now cover four people at once while still helping with the pass rush.
