Panthers will drop Jake Delhomme (1 Viewer)

After a horrendous performance in the 2008 divisional playoffs followed by an even more horrendous performance in the 2009 season, plenty of media types were proclaiming (we won't name names -- not because we've decided not to be prickish but because we can't recall who they were, specifically) that quarterback Jake Delhomme definitely would be back.

We didn't buy it.

And we're glad we didn't.

Jay Glazer of FOX reports that the Panthers have cut Delhomme.

His tenure in Carolina ends with a whimper, via a career-low passer rating of 59.4.

He'll possibly land elsewhere as a backup, maybe with the Saints, who play in his home state.

Well, I'll be the first to say it. Thanks for the memories, Jake. I really enjoyed watching you play down here until the last few years...that reminded me of my youth watching Richard Todd play...

Moore's stock does go up a bit, but I don't believe this prevents them from bringing in Vick. $3 mil [which I think Moore will make] to me doesn't scream he's the guy [want to say guys like David Carr/Leftwich were given similar $$ over the last couple years to be backups or compete as the starter for the latter.

Hard to say what Vick has left, but I think he'd be a helluva fit with Smash & Dash.

I think Delhomme will absolutely get a lot of offers as a backup. The question is whether he's too proud to sign with a team as the obvious #2 and wants to compete for a starting job.

As to the Panthers, this was so much the right move I am almost shocked they did it. :lmao:

Never will happen.

To follow up on something I brought up on another thread, I'd worry about who would back up Eli if Carr moved on to another team, say AZ. I think this would be a perfectly fine replacement...

Sorry Jake...It is what it is.

Thanks for the good years and thanks for the effort everytime you stepped on the field.

Why?I think the Panthers would want a good, system QB who doesn't try to be a superstar but simply takes care of the ball, doesn't turn it over and just gets it in the hands of their top playmakers: handoffs to Williams and Stewart and throws to Steve Smith.

Pretty much everything that Vick has never been.

I'm excited to see how Matt Moore will do this coming season. He improved in each game he played near the end of the season. Vick won't be a Panther. Vick has the type of character that Jerry Richardson is not too fond of.Anyway, Jakes departure is bittersweet. He's such a likeable fella, a great leader, and he gave a lot of good years to the Panthers and us fans. It's a business though, and his play has dropped off a lot in the past year or so, and it's time for a new leader at QB. If Jake was cheaper, it would have been nice if he could have stuck around and been a backup. I would have liked to have seen Jake retire a Panther. I wish him the best whether it's playing in the NFL or racing his horses. Thanks Jake for taking us to the Super Bowl. Good Luck out there, rajin cajun.

Delhomme probably going back to Saints to backup Brees...

$13 million dollar cap hit. Thank goodness there's no cap this year.
Interesting. Perhaps they wouldn't have dropped him if there was a cap this year.
However, like many other decisions the team’s making, this one comes down to money. They can cut him now with no salary cap ramifications — since there is no salary cap after midnight — but they’d still owe him $12.675 million based on guarantees built into the deal his signed last April as part of their effort to clear cap room to keep Julius Peppers. He’d be owed $4.16 million in 2010, $5.12 million in 2011 and $3.4 million in 2012, with the contract written to guarantee those amounts for skill or injury. It would, however, clear the books of his charges if a cap was re-instituted at a later date.It also keeps them from paying the $10.14 million bonus he was set to receive later this spring — in effect breaking the financial hit into three smaller chunks

The Panther organization leaves me dumbfounded....they really do. Why on earth would they guarantee him 10-12 million THEN cut him? Unreal

He is not even worthy as a 3rd string QB. After Moores performance Jake was never going to play another down as a Panther. If Moore gets hurt a rookie qb would be more beneficial then Jake at this point. I have never seen a qb fail from grace harder then Jake. Both his physical and mental attributes bottomed out at the same time. Consider the 12 million just a parting gift for a great career as a Panther. There was no asset to keeping him on the roster. I get the whole "leadership" and "mentor" thing but from the looks of the end of the year last season I think Moore has everything under control.

NFC title game still leave a bad taste in your mouth? You still have nightmares of deshaun foster dragging your entire defense into the endzone with him? IMO that was the best Eagle team of that era, that was your best shot at a super bowl and the panthers came to your place and took control.

I have no issue with him being cut. I have issue with them wasting the money on him THEN cutting him. Boneheaded move IMO. It was time for Jake to go, no question about it.

I don't know. He had bad feelings towards the Saints when he had left there. That was almost a decade ago though.

I don't see anyone in free agency who will snatch the starting job from Matt Moore.

We are entering the Matt Moore era, and I am happy to see him get his shot.

He deserves it.

Wow, I don't feel so sorry for Jake. Carolina will still have to pay him nearly $13M spread out over the next 3 years?

i for one am excited to see what moore can do. in the few starts he had at the end of the season the guy was great. i'd say this could bump up all the panthers fantasy value rb's included.

Another trade partner for McNabb?
Ive thought all along Carolina was good spot for McNabb. Everyone knew there was no way the Panthers were gonna go with Delhomme again. Good surrounding cast in Carolina, McNabb makes them contenders in the NFC. Panthers dont have first rd pick though, if that is what eagles are looking for

This is just straight out of the Big Cats pockets. This doesnt go against the Panthers at all. This is one advantage of the uncapped year for the Panthers. I think Jakes demise surprised everyone. Fans, the league and especially the Panther Brass. They shouldnt have given him the contract and not brought in anyone to push him last year, but playing devils advocate I can see why they did it.

Over the course of the last 5 games this past season, Matt Moore had the 2nd highest qb rating behind rivers. The panthers are not trading for McNabb or anyone. Moore is the qb of the future. Look for the Cats to draft someone to groom for the future so they do not get stuck behind the 8 ball again if something happens to Moore.

didn't moore have 7 TDs & 0 INT in last three games?

he has had success in the past two, with a winning record.

fox clung to him too long, like with foster over deangelo...

even longer than fisher & collins in TEN last year.

I agree that Fox clung too long with Jake, but Fox didn't cling to Foster too long over DeAngelo. Foster and DeAngelo only played two years together, and in those two years Foster was the right one to have the starting role. DeAngelo was inexperienced, he couldn't block, he danced too much, he was behind a terrible O-Line, and he made too many rookie mistakes back then. DeAngelo improved dramatically in the offseason after Foster left.

Don't flatter yourself, the year the Eagles made it to the Super Bowl was their best team. But I could be wrong as it is hard to keep track of all of the great teams the Eagles had in that timeframe. Totally the opposite of the Panthers one and done, flash in the pan year. This may be a shot in the dark but I'm sure most of your Panther brethren would have preferred using that money to upgrade a woefully mediocre team that got smoked by the Eagles in their place last year to paying a sad sack, washed up turnover machine of a QB $12 mil as a "gift". Now I can't wait to hear about how Carolina can't afford to get involved in the FA period. Enjoy the offseason. :lmao:

Jake doing a press conference right now on NFLN.Seriously overcome with emotion.
watching that made me cry. i'm going to miss jake. not the interception side of jake, but the jake that always played with heart and fire every time he stepped on the field. jake has always been a class act, and i'm glad he was a Panther.

Fox was overcome with emotion. Delhomme was crushed. I felt bad for him but he's got 13 million reasons to feel better.
Marty Hurney was choked up too.

they don't have to pay him due to an uncap year.
wrong. he is guaranteed the money. they still owe him around something like $13 million, but making the move now keeps them from suffering any salary cap consequences.http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2010/03/0...m-panthers.html

Would that be the year that McNabb choked or puked? I get all those years confused too.

Man there was a lot of crying going on in there. This looks like a Richardson deal to me. You guys get rid of Jake or I'll get rid of all of you.

He's clearing the books for a new coach. heck, he may not even have to hire one next year with the lockout pending.
