The carnage has officially started. Hopefully SS is not dinged up too badly. He helped me win a bunch of games last year.

And we all know hamstring injuries tend to linger for a long time. Joe Horn was NEVER the same last season after he injured his hammy, in the 2nd regular season game..

Reading a few Panthers message boards, no one seems to concerned with this. Hopefully that is good news.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) Carolina Panthers All-Pro receiver Steve Smith was carted off the field Saturday with a hamstring injury on the opening day of training camp.

Midway through the afternoon session, Smith pulled up while running a long route down the left sideline. He immediately clutched his left hamstring, took a couple of steps and fell to the ground.

Two trainers came to his side, and new teammate Keyshawn Johnson also came over to check on Smith, who slowly got to his feet after about a minute. He threw his gloves in anger, got onto the back of the cart and was brought inside.

``It seems like he probably strained it,'' Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said. ``He's done this before in training camp.''

Smith, who led the NFL with 103 receptions for 1,563 yards and 12 touchdowns last season, missed the final week of June's coaching sessions with hamstring pain.

Guys always get carted off for minor pulls.

I'll give the Panthers credit now for damage control. How else will they get a replacement cheep?

Still a good headline to get everyone attention early. Meshawn will probably have a press conference to say he's ready to take on the #1 role for the good of the team.

Been touting Drew all off season. Getting three weeks worth of reps with the first team will do nothing but speed the process of his developement along.

This clouds Steve Smith considerably. Look at how many receivers are completely impaired by lingering turf toes, hamstring pulls, strains, etc...

at least none of you are overreacting :bye:

overreact much?
Hey Lauryn,I realize you're trying to be witty but I in fact was dead serious. I didn't say anyone should drop Steve Smith like a rock, but this injury ABSOLUTELY clouds his situation. Let's say the reports are correct and he's out for three weeks. If he's back practicing by August 20th or so; most redraft leagues won't be impacted. You'll either know he's OK and he should be drafted according to current ADP and rankings.

But what if the injury lingers another week? Would you really feel comfortable drafting Steve Smith in the late first, early second round if he hadn't practiced at all in camp? If he doesn't step on the field between now and your draft, you would take him that early?

That's all I'm saying. If the timetable is accurate, this is no big deal. But even if his injury goes one week longer than scripted, it makes taking him in the 2nd virtually impossible unless your risk tolerance is incredibly high.

I personally didn't think he should be the #1 ranked WR anyways -- definitely Top 5, but not #1. This is definitely going to affect his ADP...

hate to see how you guys would react to something serious.
If you've had any experience with fantasy football at all, you would know that hamstring injuries suffered in training camp are serious business.

I am in complete agreement with Jason Wood above.Did everyone miss the bolded part above? He already missed a week of practice due to hamstring pain. This is now the second time and camp just started which means he hasn't been practicing much at all in between the two incidents.

Again, he could fully recover, but if he tweaks it again, then I would be very, very worried.

It's summer. Hamstring strains are somewhat common but still a pain.

I agree..Hamstrings are serious business.

I believe it was two years ago (maybe three) that Urlacher screwed up his hammy in training camp, and kept trying to come back, and come back, and come back, and he would always think that he was ready and he never was. It was almost a waste of a season.

This is excellent news. I hope it is bad.
Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but we generally would like opinions based in fact for posts in the Shark Pool.Exactly WHY is the loss of a consensus top-3 fantasy receiver "excellent" news?

And it is beyond classless (and distinctly frowned upon in the Shark Pool) to wish bad things on NFL players.

Why make such a big deal about what he said? Who really cares what he hopes? It wont affect me in the slightest and the "football gods" dont give 2 craps neither. Just ignore the post.

Smith was having issues with his hammy in June so to see him hurt it in the first day of training camp workouts is a red flag for me that the injury could be a lingering one throughout the season. I have to declare my keeper list my August 1 and was deciding between him and TO. I was going to keep Smith because he is less risky but the hammy issue really raises questions for him now as well. :wall:

I was also planning on targetting Delhomme as my QB after the first 10 or so were taken in my league. He always flies under the radar and with the addition of Keyshawn I am very high on him this year. Smith's injury is going to make me think about whether to target Jake. At least I have a month until my draft to sort that decision out.
