WR Carter may be dropping on depth chart

SPARTANBURG - Observations from Wednesday's practices:

+ Amazing how quickly things change in the NFL. A little more than a week ago, agent Michael Huyghue was taking verbal barbs at the Panthers during contract negotiations for rookie linebacker Jon Beason. Wednesday afternoon, he was given the red-carpet treatment, sitting in the section reserved for players’ family members.

+ Speaking of Beason, he’s getting plenty of practice time as other linebackers are recovering from injuries. Overall, he’s doing well and it’s easy to see he’s an exceptional athlete. But it’s still a process. There was one play in the afternoon session where Beason jogged to the sideline, apparently thinking his personnel group was supposed to come off. As the offense snapped the ball, middle linebacker Dan Morgan was trying to get Beason’s attention and get him back on the field, but the defense had to get through the play with only 10 players.

+ Receiver Drew Carter appears to be tumbling down the depth chart. Keary Colbert got most of the first-team snaps. But a healthy Jarrett may be the best bet to win the starting position.

In my opinion, Carter just doesn't have good enough hands even though he has improved his route running skills.

I'm with Pasquino here.. When it comes to fantasy football and player evals, we're all hypersenstive to the news and tidbits like this, especially during preseason. There all sorts of things that generally help us during the summer to sharpen our acumen for drafts, etc.. however, we always need to remind ourselves not to overreact to preseason news, coachspeak (some for real, some meant to *motivate* players - re: Tatum Bell).. Another common thing that can help us, but sometimes hurt us is groupthink.

Its all useful information, but let's give it a preseason game or two.. and see what's going on. It's a three horse race with Carter, Colbert and Jarrett. Ultimately, I think Jarrett is the best bet long-term, but all three bring something unique to the table and I suspect that all three will get their just due in camp, preseason games and even during the real games.

Last week they were saying he was having a great camp. Willing to go over the middle and running good routes. I think it's more of trying to see if Colbert will snap out of his 2 year funk and actually try to do something. In the end, I think Jarrett winds up the #2 by the middle of the season.

FYI... The only thing Carter and Smith have in common is speed(Carter beat Smith) and weight. Carter is about 5 inches taller though.

I think a likely scenario, unfortunately, is that S. Smith gets his usual 40-45% of the passing yards, and these three guys cancel each other out to a certain extent, leaving the Panthers with only one useful fantasty WR...

I said the style was similar... both stretch the field a bit. Body type may not be the same.Jarrett is probably ideal for the spot opposite Smith... he can work the middle and be the possession to the stretch.Watching Carter, he just doesn't seem to be a prototypical starting WR... fits more into the slot with his ability to stretch the field.

I went to the Panthers training camp last Friday. Colbert ran with the first team the entire practice. Steve Smith got most of the looks at WR (no surprise there) and was clearly the best athlete on the entire field (Peppers didn't practice, so can't comment there). Colbert though, was solid, making some nice grabs in traffic as did Jeff King. I can't remember Drew Carter making a single play of interest, although it's tough to impress when the QB doesn't look your way.

I own Drew Carter and liked him as a sleeper since his rookie year, but his opportunity passed him by last year. He got his starts when others were injured and he basically flopped. Now he cannot get the coaches to like him clearly over Colbert and a big tall productive rookie is breathing down his neck. I will hold a little longer, until Sept., but I dont think he can really deliver much

I'll wait till the third preseason game to worry about this, and even then that's as a Panther fan. As a fantasy player, if I'm worried about these two, I've got bigger problems.
