is this the Cuban missle crisis?
Absolutely not.
Did you have a meeting with Vanderjagt?
I spoke with him shortly.
Time to do it with TO?
I don't have anything to talk to him about right this minute.
Is this getting comical to you?
No, but I know what you guys are waiting for. Its in vain.
Will he practice this week?
I don't know.
When will be the time to talk to him?
I'll let you know.
Are you disappointed he missed a meeting?
I'm not going to discuss that. That's inside the organization. We have the same standards for everyone. Last year we only fined 4 or 5 guys. Most of the fines I've collected the last few years have been weight clauses. Sometimes someone oversleeps, but nothing flagrant. We keep them in house and I don't annouce it, but we do administer it on a consistant basis. Sometimes with younger guys not making much money, it could represent almost 5% of your salary. Its not a drop in the bucket. So I try to be a little judicious with the younger players.
Does this thing usually merit a 1 on 1 from you?
No, Its all been negotiated in the CBA. Everyone knows what it is. I do it on a consistant basis, and the only time I cut anyone slack is when he's young and I feel sorry for them.
Are there escalators for repeat offenders?
Yes.
You say you get to know guys by how they act. What does it tell you if someone is late for meetings?
Once or twice, some things happen. If you're late a 100 times you'll probably be fired.
What if you have a history of showing up late.
Who are you talking about?
Terrell Owens, he has a history.
I don't know if he has a history of being late for other teams. Look ... this conversation is going nowhere.
Why is the time right to talk to Vanderjagt but not TO?
Because Vanderjagt has been practicing. He pulled himself out right before the NO game in warmups. We were waiting for him to tell us what it was going to be until right before the game Saturday, and he said it would be wise if he sat out again.
Do you think you need to handle him differently?
At the end of the day, I knew I would be the guy who had to deal with him. Everyone on our team. What anyone else thinks, all the chatterboxes, I don't care. I'll do what's best for my organization and my football team. No one else has all the facts, I do. I consider things you guys don't even think of. So at the end of the day, I have to do it. I don't care what anyone else thinks. The only thing tedious to me is answering the same question all day.
Has he been a problem so far?
No.
Do you think the players observe what he gets away with?
Listen, these guys need to worry about themselves. Those that have been with me, know. Those that haven't will have to find out.
Do you think the fines are incentive enough?
I don't think its fair to say these fines don't have an effect. If you ever lost your wallet, it bothers you. On the other hand, money you win at the track tends to be money that spends a little easier.
Do you consider this a 1 time mistake with TO?
You guys must think I'm dumb.
What extent are you counting on him for Week 1?
I dont' know that. I'll have to see what I see. If someone doesn't look good, I'm not going to play him. If he doesn't practice at all, how could you?
He's got 10 years of film, that's what he said.
Think about it. Are you out of your mind?
Deion did it.
Okay, and say he goes out there and gets hurt or doesn't perform, what are you canibals saying then? That he shouldn't have played without practicing.
You say other opinions don't matter, Jerry's matters. Jerry says why wouldn't you play him if he's healthy.
How will i know he's healthy if he doesn't practice.
Why haven't you talked to him yet?
Maybe I will one day, but I don't know I need to do that yet.
National perception?
Do these people know what is going on?
Like the Philly people?
So these people have a crystal ball? Lookit, conversation is over. Anything else today?
Are you set with your starting OL?
Not quite yet. Because of Flozell.
What is your plan for starters on Thursday Night/
haven't thought about it yet.
Will Crayton practice?
I think so. We'll see. I wont rush him.
Do you have a feel for if this is your best team in Dallas after 3 preseason games?
We got good depth. We got people calling for our players, that's always a good sign. A few years ago we couldn't get a phone to ring.
Will you have to have a kicking specialist?
I don't know that yet.
What changed your mind about Frederickson punting?
I didn't change my mind. The situations called for some things with the coverage teams that we needed to look at.
Watkins?
Nothing glaring. Pretty good job. He's getting a lot of snaps. Like McQuinstan.
Rector and the need to get a WR?
He's really helping the situation. He's a kid that I'm proud of. He came in here young and immature and inflated opinion of what he can do. He realized quickly that he's in a battle to survive in this business. I told him he has 1 asset, you're very quick. Parlay that asset into something. They'll try to disrupt you. I've had guys like you before. You have to get much stronger, and get used to being beat up. Get stamina, because it takes guys like you a lot more effort to get into the pattern. Pound for pound, might be the strongest guy on the team. His stamina is improved, but not where I want it. He's the only player, besides Terry, that has that juice. Our other guys are longer striders. I'm happy with what he's done. He's a competitive guy. He thinks the ball is his when its in the air. That's a good thing for a WR.
Skyler?
I'll get him every chance. He hasn't had much of a chance the other night because teams were always keeping deep into our field near the endzone.
Has Greg Ellis gone better than you hoped?
After the game I told him to quit thinking. Greg is a pleaser. He wants to do everything by the numbers. I told him to quit doing that. When you don't know what's going on, you're just being a football player and you do good. Then you start to find out all the things you don't know, then you start worrying about all that stuff. Just like that sign that hangs up in our lockerroom .. knowledge causes confidence, and confidence makes you play faster.
Davis will be ready?
Yeah, I think he's practicing today
Do you want Ellis more instinctive?
No, I'm telling him not to worry about what foot goes where and where to step in this certain situation.
AB said you really helped him mature, and he quotes back to some things you told him.
I'm happy if that's true. I know its hard for some to believe, but I really did like that kid. I spent a lot of time with him personally. I'm glad things are going okay for him. If I had a positive effect on him, I'm happy about that. Some of these kids when you first get them, its a new world for both them and you. I was patient with him. I liked him a lot personally. If he's matured, that's a good thing.
What do you need to get your defense tested?
I can't fix the game. Its just been a coincidence that our offense has been holding hte ball and the defense has forced some 3 and outs. Our 2nd team defense got tired the other night. I'm worried about that.
Is your defense's best test your offense?
No, I woulnd't say that. But we have bene working them hard.
Would you intentionally put your team in bad situations in the preseason just to see what they can do.
No, I can't do that. We got confidence problems here.
McQuinstan get on the practice squad?
Are you kidding me? They would be like panthers. Don't worry, he's staying. I don't know .. we must be living right. Or Jeff is. Or Jerry. He's got all the ability you need. Balance, quickness, strength and smart. His brother is the same way. We had him in for a visit too. He's inexperienced. but in the 7th round, if you draft a guy who you know has the talent to play .... just find size and speed, you're better off. Jason Ferguson. Troy Brown.
Skyler doesn't look as fast here as he did in LSU.
The guys he's playing with are faster. Are your final rosters due this week?
How did you view the final preseason game this week?
I'll just stay on course. I'm not changing anything. I'll play the starters until they've had enough. I've been forced to play some of these young guys more, but that's not really a bad thing. The more experience I can get these McQuinstans and Watkins the better off we'll be long run.
Colombo and Fabini.
Colombo did well in the run game. He didn't have many problmes in the passing game. But when you're doing what you want to, things look pretty good. When you're forced to saddle up and pass when the other team knows it, that's when you see problems. You notice we played a little conservatively at the end of the half. My QB got mad at me. I told him I'm not worried about him, I'm worried about some other guys. I'm trying to not get you killed and you're mad at me?
Spears?
He's doing alright. Progressing well.
How many TE's will you keep?
At least 2, as many as 4.
Do you trust McQuinstan now in a regular game?
Well, he saw action against first string guys for 3 quarters the other night. Now these guys we're playing here have 3 #1 draft picks on the defensive line. Plus Pat Williams from Buffalo. Someone told me the other day that the lowest person drafted in their defensive front 7 was the 3rd round. They have a great OL, especially on the left with Hutchinson and McKinney. The Hatchers of the world will find out what this league is really all about on Thursday.
Where is Pettiti?
He's a swing. That's not a bad thing.
Can you keep him if McQuinstan is the backup LT?
Well, I usually only suit up 3, so the backup has to swing. I don't know if McQuinstan can do it.
Is Fabini an odd man out?
No, I might keep all of them.
Flozell practicing?
No, he's doing with with Britt and we'll see where he is.
Absolutely not.
Did you have a meeting with Vanderjagt?
I spoke with him shortly.
