Parity in fantasy football? (1 Viewer)

Its seems for about 3 or 4 years I have been using a combination of "average draft position" and "value based draft" to get the most out of my league.

For a long time it was just me and 1 other successful owner using this system with sites such as footballguys and Antsports. Now I notice that every major site (CBSsportsline, FoxSports, ESPN) all have their "AVERAGE DRAFT POSITION" chart...

what sucks about this is that for years it was the 1 that would do the research and work to find this good info that would win leagues, and now these fat lazy team owners do not even have to leave the site their league is on to find this information.

Fantasy football is becoming so popular and with so much online information available everywhere that my wife could print a few sheets off the internet and have a successful draft.

Anyone else have this feeling that much like the NFL, fantasy football is going to go through its "parity" stage because of its popularity and the internet?

I hear you. I invited a neighbor to play in our 12 team league and he had nothing when I picked him up for the draft. I gave him a Top 200 to draft with and he WON the legue.. He's a solid owner now but that Top 200 was a damn good cheatsheet. I'm still looking for my first championship while he has won another....Where your draft prep and "inside" info is going to come into play is the middle rounds. Look at all the possible breakout RB's this year. Your gonna be filling up on those RB's while others are taking Favre, Chicago DST and Rackers....

Yeah, I get a kick out of all these guys who give you the "hey, you just gotta be more of a shark" BS. Whatever. We all know that fantasy football is part skill, and part luck. And with the proliferation of good quality information out there, the skill factor is getting pared down to nil. Don't get me wrong, I still love this game, but unless you're playing in a league that you probably shouldn't be (w/ a bunch of guppies), then luck plays a much bigger role today than it did even 3 or 4 years ago.

Very true...and thats where most of my focus stay.....between 3 and 10 with a little focus on late round flyers.

I have seen this happen in redraft league alot. This is why I think dynasty league are more challenging.

You still need some degree of skill to get the players that give you the best chance to win, but I agree that the field has been leveled and the luck factor has always been there. The problem is that your margin for error shrinks.

Used to be you could get away w/ a not-so-smart move once in awhile. No more...

That is the truth! We have a 14 team league that has been around for about 6 years.... it's not a money league but bragging rights are valuable with these guys. Three years ago we had a guy who was unable to play so my wife (who had played twice in a Smallworld salary league) wanted to play. She joined somewhat last minute so I shared my cheatsheets with her... bad idea. In the 6 years I've been in the league I've always finished top four with one championship and one second place team. The year I shared my sheets with my wife I finished 8/14. Boo!This year we needed another and again my wife wanted to play... not wanting to share my offseason of work, I printed out some random rankings from ESPN. I unfortunately landed in the 13th spot... she drafted 2nd. My wifes team with nothing other than a quick printout from ESPN:14 team league...B. Roethlisberger(Pit - QB) H. Ward(Pit - WR) D. Branch(NE - WR) Ma. Jones(Jac - WR)L. Tomlinson(SD - RB)W. McGahee(Buf - RB) L. Smith(Phi - TE)BenchK. Warner(Ari - QB)A. Bryant(SF - WR)B. Stokley(Ind - WR)C. Houston(NYJ - RB)KickersO. Mare(Mia - K)Defense PlayersK. Bulluck(Ten - DL)Do. Edwards(SD - DL) A. Wilson(Ari - DB)G. Wilson(NYG - DB)B. Dawkins(Phi - DB)

This has occurred to me recently. It's getting harder and harder to get any type of edge. The thing is, the "sharks" may know WHY a player should do well. The guppy merely has to look at a cheatsheet or two and their work is done.

a. The only time you really *have to* win is in a money league, and I have seen no evidence that anyone enters a money league (even small sums) without any idea of what they're doing. So it's harder to get an edge anyway.

b. Therefore, in all other situations, we're probaly just playing, ultimately, for fun. And I think it's more fun if it's more competitive. So I don't mind the upgrade in information available to the masses.

c. That said, some people obviously come to my friendly fun leagues with little or no clue (drafting CMart, KRob, etc). So in reality we maybe STILL only have to be concerned with about 75% of owners.

Its absolutely true. Its not like 15 years ago pre internet/magazines when you could just pull a name out of your butt at the draft that no one had heard of and watch him take the starting job Week 1 and never look back. Not like anyone's a secret out there. The guy will be on somebody's roster, it doesnt matter what round he's drafted in. It didnt matter if you spent 12 hours on projections for the guy that are 60 points off, anyone with a cheatsheet can pick him. There isnt any mystery out there.
