Part Auction/Part Serpentine Draft (1 Viewer)

I am in a league where the first seven "rounds" of the draft so to speak will be done via auction. The remaining picks will be a standard snake. Does anyone have any experience drafting this way? It will be my first time with this format. I am wondering if I should load up on 1-2 mega pickups in the auction segment, gambling that I can find some gems late - or if I should spread it around....

I'm in the same boat. We're trying auction for the 1st time this year, and doing it for the first five rounds. In talking about it with some of the other owners, it seems that a key is to not nominate someone you wouldn't normally draft in the 5th round. If you get stuck with him - even at $1 - you've essentially used one of your first five picks on this slug. Somebody might take him off your hands if he's a home-town boy or something, but it's probably not worth the risk.

I would think knowing what your serpentine position is ahead of time would be important as well, which we don't at the moment. Any other ideas?

We have done this in the past and think it is a great route. You are 100% correct that you should not nominate anyone that you would not want to burn a top 5 round pick on. No need to throw out sleepers and other spares. (Our system rotated the nomination, and all nominations came with an automatic $1 bid).

And as for determining the serpentine portion, it can be based on the amount of money left over by the owners (the more you have, if any, the higher the position), otherwise slotting is based on when you ran out of money - earlier to run out (higher risk) means a higher serpentine position.

Absolutely. Why leave it to chance, if all you have is one more spot to fill, and you have the most money?

The strategy on those last few nominations is going to be very interesting. We'll see tomorrow night. If anyone else could throw in some last-minute thoughts here, I'd appreciate it.
