News on 2010 Schedule that is being worked on now

BIG FRED : 1/29/2010 3:08 pm

I got this email from a friend of mine about next years NFL schedule .I guess we will see how true this is in April ....

A third party company works with the NFL for the scheduling period. Making the schedule for the next season is a huge process because you have to schedule around already scheduled events, have to take team requests (I.E. Tampa Bay doesn't want to play SF on the road one week and then Cleveland on the road the next) and figure out what teams get MNF, SNF, TNF game and how many. Then you have to proof read the schedule to make damn sure you don't have any conflicts and that no team is getting screwed by travel time and days between games and that stuff.

ESPN and NBC send in their requests this time of the year. From what I've heard we'll see, in no order:

MNF:

Dallas/Philly

New England/Green Bay

Atlanta/New Orleans

Indy/NY Giants

New England/NY Jets

Dallas/NY Giants

Philly/Washington

Indy/Houston

Green Bay/Philly

Tennessee/Houston

Pittsburgh/New Orleans

Denver/San Diego on Christmas

They second MNF game on opening week will probably be Oakland/San Fran but San Diego/Oakland, Denver/Oakland and Oakland/Seattle are also being thrown around

SNF:

New Orleans/Baltimore

Minnesota/Dallas

Dallas/Washington

Pittsburgh/Atlanta

New England/Indy

Green Bay/Minnesota

San Diego/New England

Dallas/Indy

San Diego/Indy

New Orleans/Minnesota

And the opening thursday night game of the season depends on who wins the Super Bowl. If New Orleans wins it will be New Orleans/Atlanta at the SuperDome and if Indy wins it will be Indy/Cincinnati at Lucas Oil Stadium

Thanksgiving games will be Detroit/NY Jets and Dallas/Chicago. Tampa Bay/Carolina will probably be the night game.

Those are the requests ESPN/NBC have sent in for MNF and SNF that have been accepted and will happen. There's a bunch more games that have been requested but CBS/FOX have protected or the NFL just didn't accept.
sorry if Honda, didn't see anything

Obviously it's too soon to react to this but as a Niners fan it's tough to have your up and coming team not play in prime time. I'm sure they'd give SF a Saturday night and or Thursday night if the games above are going to happen but... what can you do?

Maybe only Niners fans think the team is up and coming?

No rose colored glasses here. The team has been horrible but without Warner and key free agents about to leave from Arizona the Niners have a great shot at winning the NFC West... which is better than they've done in the past number of years. They are definitely up and coming.

Hope you are right. I hate the Cards. :bag:Anybody have a sense for whether we can believe this schedule leak?

Nice to see NO/Atl on the primetime schedule, that's nearly always a great game to watch, even when both teams stunk.

This... :goodposting:

Yep, we're an up and coming team and will be better after our 2 first round picks. So if S.F. plays Oakland their first game I doubt you'll see it on Monday night. Probably not too many people will be interested in watching that matchup and we all know it's about the revenue and ratings. Sad but true. Once the 49ers have a better year in 2010 you'll see them on the primetime schedule more.

someone's going to be fired for this. they don't release it until April.

If true, this is great as a Charger fan. Get the Pats and Colts in prime time, and a Christmas game against the Broncos?!?

:blackdot: if true.

Yeah, that 3rd party company that "works for the NFL" probably won't be "working for the NFL" for much longer. Despite whether it is real or not, this just shows the complexity of creating a league schedule. Also, they have to account for teams like the Bucs who share their stadium with the USF Bulls.

As a person with no home team, I will offer my unbiased opinions:

- I'm only counting 12 MNF games and 10 SNF games so that can't be the complete list

- Pats/Colts match-ups are ratings gold. Last two games were on SNF and the one before that was on CBS. I'm guessing its MNF's turn this year.

- No offense to Redskins fans but your team has no business being on prime time. But they are a big market and play in the NFC East so they'll get a few.

- Houston is an emerging team so its nice to see them get some games. Seems like the NFL is pushing the Texans/Titans rivalry.

- Either the Giants or Jets will get a week 1 primtetime home match to showoff the new stadium

- If the Saints win the SB, I would like to see them face the Steelers on opening night (last two SB champs)

- If the Colts win the SB, I would like to see them face the Chargers on opening night

- Cincy deserves atleast one primetime home game. I could see them hosting the Steelers.

- It would be nice to see a primetime game at Arrowhead. Chiefs might be decent next year. Maybe the Thanksgiving night game?

Why don't they just write each team name on 16 pieces of paper and mix/match them on a big table like they used to?

Um, Christmas is on a Saturday - that would be NFL network territory, no?

I'd also be a bit surprised if they had the Chargers play on Christmas two years in a row.

The Bengals at Colts for the opening game seems like it would be likely. Actually I was going to start a thread about the likelihood of each game - the Colts actually have a decent number of teams that could be in that spot. The reason I think the Bengals might be there is that you have the Chad factor, a team that wants the exposure in the Bengals, and - to be honest - an early season game so if the Bengals backslide that will not have happened yet (I fully expect any and all Bengals night games will be no later than week 9).

Colts opponents at home in '10:

Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Tennessee Titans, Kansas City Chiefs, San Diego Chargers, Cincinnati Bengals, Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants

Looking at this bunch, I can see where FOX would really resist losing either the Cowboys or Giants games (though the Manning bowl certainly would merit an opening game spot). Similarly, the Chargers might be "too big" a game to have in that spot. Houston would seem to be the most likely alternative to the Bengals as they've made strides, but I'm not sure how much the NFL would really want a divisional game in this spot. CBS could certainly let this game go as well, since the geography in terms of where they'd telecast it really isn't all that great as well. I'd rank the likelihood this way:

1) Cincy, 2) Houston, 3) Tennessee, 4) Giants, 5) San Diego, 6) Jacksonville, 7) Dallas, 8) Kansas City

Looking at the Saints opponents at home in '10:

Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, St. Louis Rams, Seattle Seahawks, Minnesota Vikings, Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers

There are A LOT more unttractive match-ups in the Saints home schedule which really limits the realistic options. As with FOX and the Colts, I think CBS would be mightily unhappy to lose Pittsburgh-New Orleans, especially when the only other Saints game they could get is against the Browns. Minnesota and a rematch of the NFC Championship is a very appealing game, but again might be "too big" to put this early in the season when game 1 is sure to generate a big number in most instances. The Rams, Seahawks, Buccaneers, and Browns seem like a recipe for blowouts and low ratings and they'd want to avoid that. Carolina is a team with potential for sure, especially based on their late season play, but if you're going to take a divisional game it seems like Atlanta becomes the obvious choice - especially as this is a very fierce rivalry which gives it some extra shine. Despite its big regional appeal, I think that it's a game FOX wouldn't mind sacrificing so much as the likelihood of them making it the national 4 PM game or something would seem less than other possiblities (see Vikings-Saints) I'd rank the likelihood this way:

1) Atlanta (by a mile), 2) Carolina, 3) Minnesota, 4) Pittsburgh, 5) Seattle, 6) Uh, Tampa Bay?, 7) Cleveland I guess, 8) St. Louis.

Will definitely be interesting to see how much of this pans out. It's totally possible for this to be 'real' btw as these are merely the requests of the networks. I'm quite sure that not all of their requests will actually be granted.

yes, this gave all the competing TV networks ammo in their negotiations with the NFL schedulers. it makes talks more difficult.

First, Indy with 5 night games? No.

Second: Those Monday night games are far too juicey.

I saw this elsewhere, and i'm pretty sure it's bogus.
