The Patriots have made contact with free agent Chris Brown but nothing is imminent, according to the Boston Herald.

We're surprised the Dolphins aren't in the market for a runner with just injury-prone rookie Lorenzo Booker behind Ronnie Brown. The Patriots are always looking to add talent. Brown would likely push Justise Hairston off the roster.

-----------------------------------------------

Does the Pats interest in Brown indicate that Maroney's shoulder might be worse than expected? The Patriots are notoriously tight lipped about injuries so it is hard to tell at this point. But, Maroney owners can't be feeling too good at the moment.

Brown could be a decent handcuff for Maroney should he sign.

I have spoken with people close to the team that have indicated to me that the Pats are "looking for insurance" should Maroney's shoulder not be fully recovered. Maroney signing autographs lefthanded at a charity softball game this week raised a few eyebrows.

They've been talking to Brown for a few weeks. While the Pats are confident in Maroney's abilities and potential, we are still a long way away from the start of the season and no one nows for sure how Maroney's shoulder will be in 4 months.

It appears that Brown is trying to get a starting job (or at least a larger role than pure backup), and Brown may just wait until a team loses a starting RB to injury and then sign.

It would be a great signing for New England. Even if Maroney is healthy, Chris Brown is a solid player who could give them 5-10 carries each week off the bench.

Thanks Guys. Do you have a link to the Globe? I have some but they're several weeks old like back when Barlow was still on the market.

The big thing that's kept me from be too worried about Maroney was the fact that the Patriots didn't seem too worried about insurance. If that's changing, that's a story.

Thanks.

i think they are looking for depth at RB
Yeah. They have room on the roster for him, that's for sure, and they have the money. Seems like a good fit. I'm sure Sammy Morris can look decent in that offense, but I think Brown could look better.

I see a Brown signing as an indication that they are not comfortable with Morris and Faulk carrying the load should Maroney be injured.

Also, Dillon is still available, so he is a candidate as well

Little rush on Brown

While the Pats have made contact with free agent Chris Brown, nothing is imminent in terms of bringing the 6-foot-3, 220-pound former Tennessee Titans [team stats] running back aboard to shore up the backfield.

“We’ve had some cursory conversations with the Patriots,” said Wynn Silberman, who represents Brown. “They respect what Chris can do. They felt he may prove to be a nice fit in their offensive scheme, a nice complement to (Laurence) Maroney and the very legitimate backs they have, but at this point, we’re in a little bit of a holding pattern. We want to make sure it’s the right situation for Chris, and if Chris is going to be involved in a dual-back, or supporting role. We want to make sure he’s contributing in the best way possible. We’ve agreed to sit tight, continue talking, and see what happens.”

Brown played in just five games last year for the Titans, partially because of injury, but ran for 851 yards in 15 games in 2005, and 1,067 yards in 11 games in 2004.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Why would they wait? IMO, either because Brown is drawing interest from other teams where he could have a more prominent role or they are waiting for Maroney's injury status to become more clear before signing with the Patriots. If Maroney is unable to go, then Brown could sign and follow the same path as Travis Henry, who had enough success with the Titans last year to draw renewed interest from other teams as a starter.

I don't think Brown would have much impact on Maroney. He's a role player at best.

Brown would be a help to Maroney (and his owners).

I don't know about you guys, but I get tired of seeing the RBs on my rosters wear down due to overuse just as fantasy playoff time hits.

My exact thought process...now that Brown is being looked at.
