Because they have been very active with roster moves, releases, re-signings, and contract extensions in the last 48 hours. Teams normally wouldn't spike that much activitity at the trading deadline if they weren't at least considering making a move.why are the Pats tied to every trade rumor?
Doesn't Chambers have a huge contract? I doubt anyone will take on that burden.ETA: CONTRACT INFO: 2009: $4.55 million, 2010: Free AgentI can definitely see the Chargers moving him. Wouldn't surprise me if the Pats were on the other side....

I think his salary is about $4.5 or $5 mill. Too much for his ability.Doesn't Chambers have a huge contract? Doesn't UFARFA mean a team can beat his current 4.5 million contract to get him if SD doesn't match it? I don't see that happening.ETA: I meant RFA, not UFA, sorry. Just? wasn't that 2 years ago?I do realize that Merriman had a bad knee injury and obv. that is going to take some time to come back from...BUTDoes anyone else think that the fact that he got busted juicing (and I assume is no longer juicing), make for a less-Merrimanesque Merriman?
two of the moves that Pats made were because they had guys on minimum salary benefits and the only way to extend them beyond this season is to waive them and then resign. Banta-Cain has already been resigned.Because they have been very active with roster moves, releases, re-signings, and contract extensions in the last 48 hours. That seems to be the general consensus around the league. No different than guys like Giambi and Ortiz suddenly becoming very average once they get nabbed and know they are being watched.Does anyone else think that the fact that he got busted juicing (and I assume is no longer juicing), make for a less-Merrimanesque Merriman?
I never said he was just busted...but yeah that was 2 years ago and last year, he was injured. So I do think that it's a valid point that both the knee and the lack of juice are the factors that he's not what he was a few years ago.Just? wasn't that 2 years ago?I do realize that Merriman had a bad knee injury and obv. that is going to take some time to come back from...BUTDoes anyone else think that the fact that he got busted juicing (and I assume is no longer juicing), make for a less-Merrimanesque Merriman?
No, it means he'll be an unrestricted FA, who is free to negotiate a contract for any amount (at or above the NFL min) and length that is mutually agreeable between him and an NFL team. The $4.5m is what he is being paid this season in the last year of his contract.Doesn't UFA mean a team can beat his current 4.5 million contract to get him if SD doesn't match it? Sure it's got something to do with it. Steroids can do wonders for the average guy and are just as effective for a genetic freak like Merriman. The guy was an absolute monster and was telling everyone that he was the strongest and fastest linebacker to ever play the game. There has to be some data out there to support steroid users and an increased risk in injuries as well. I know your able to lift heavier weights almost instantly, depending on how potent/effective they are. This puts alot more stress on joints and tendons and I would bet that would increase the risk of injury.fasteddie_21 said:I do realize that Merriman had a bad knee injury and obv. that is going to take some time to come back from...BUTDoes anyone else think that the fact that he got busted juicing (and I assume is no longer juicing), make for a less-Merrimanesque Merriman?

David-Just a quick note of thanks for always having the latest take on the Patriots. David does a great job with Patriots rumors/stories.I'd like to think everyone here thinks of me the same way when it comes to Rick Springfield info. Thanks for the clarification. If there IS a salary cap next year, then Merriman is an UFA (if he's not franchised). IIRC, if there IS NO salary cap, then Merriman would be a RFA. It's one of the quirky rules that comes into play without a salary cap. The number of years to become an UFA would go up (which I don't think Merriman would meet).
