Huh. Surprised about Claridge -- I was sold that he had a solid shot to unseat Monty Beisel inside this year. Hard to know why they dumped him today. Likely a reasonable explanation here, but the spidey senses are tingling that maybe a deal for Donnie Edwards may be in the works. Of course, there are all kinds of rumors that the Saints have already all but acquired Donnie E.

The confirmation on Harrison should be considered a mild setback for his owners, but it isn't official that he won't be able to start the season just yet.

The Patriots announced that they have released linebacker Ryan Claridge and defensive lineman Kader Drame.

The team also released its physically unable to perform list. Players on the list include: receiver Bam Childress, cornerback Randall Gay, safety Rodney Harrison, receiver Chad Jackson, offensive lineman Nick Kaczur, center Dan Koppen, fullback/running back Patrick Pass, long snapper Lonie Paxton, and defensive linemen Richard Seymour and Johnathan Sullivan.

Players on the PUP list can not participate in practice but can take part in team meetings and rehabilitation work. Once taken off the PUP list, players can begin practicing immediately.

The release of Claridge is a bit of a surprise. A fifth-round draft choice out of UNLV in 2005, he spent all of last season on the injured reserve list (shoulder). He was projected to compete for playing time at both inside and outside linebacker after playing in a 3-4 defense in college. Claridge rehabbed in Las Vegas last year, which essentially made 2006 a rookie year in terms of learning the playbook and being around the team.

from what I've read, Claridge was playing exclusively at OLB recently. I thought he was a nice sleeper to take over an ILB spot at some point before reading that. Definitely surprised to see him cut loose this soon though as I think he was the highest LB drafted during the Belichick era.

they signed Chad Brown to a 1-year deal, so I guess he provides nice depth and versatility.

what is wrong with Richard Seymour? I hadn't heard he wasn't healthy.

 Nobody is saying.

FoxSportsNet story from the Blogger

The four-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman also missed the start of training camp last year in a holdout, got a raise for 2005 and a multiyear contract after last season. He missed four games with a knee injury and there is no indication he's seriously injured now; the Patriots did not indicate why he was placed on the PUP list.
