Patriots Sign DB Iwuoma and OL Bubin Posted Oct 5, 2006FOXBORO, Mass. - The New England Patriots signed defensive back Chidi Iwuoma to the active roster, and offensive lineman Sean Bubin to the practice squad Wednesday October 4, 2006. Both players were free agents at the time of their signing. Terms of the deals were not released. Iwuoma, 28, has played for the Detroit Lions (2001) and Pittsburgh Steelers (2002-05). The 5-foot-9-inch, 184-pound defensive back and special teams player has managed 80 special teams tackles and 10 defensive stops in his five-year career. Iwuoma was released by the Steelers September 6, 2006Bubin, 25, a reserve lineman out of Illinois was a member of the Jaguars and Lions (2004), and more recently spent time on the Minnesota Vikings practice squad (2005). The 6-foot-6, 305-pound lineman was originally chosen by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the fifth round of the 2004 NFL Draft (159th overall). Bublin played for the Hamburg Sea Devils of the NFL Europe League in 2006. The Vikings released him on August 17, 2006.The team still has one spot available on the practice squad. The 53-man
First Chad Scott, then Hank Poteat, and now Chidi Iwouma.

Iwouma's borderline useless in the defensive backfield, but he's a great special teams player. Nose for the ball and flies to it.

IMO You're stretching a little considerring someone so "well travelled" an ex-Steeler. Scott was a good move. Poteat I always thought was depth and need. He was cut this year by us, Mangini grabbed him and cut him a day or two later. He was better than the "nothing" we had at CB but given an offseason to acquire some CBs his lesser talent level fell out of favor.Ya know who I was wonderring about? Ray Mickens. That guy was pretty good for the Jets. I know he's no youngster and I wonderred if that forced Mangini's hand in waiving him. New system new team with good youth at CB, time for a change sorta thing. Is he still available out there sitting at home somewhere? I'd like to hear we at least tried him out. It's weird that I feel we have this dire need for secondary help yet they manhandled what I thik is one of the best passing offenses last week.

 Not that it matters but I don't see where I was stretching anything.Chad Scott was drafted by and played 8 seasons with the Steelers before he signed with New England. Hank Poteat was also drafted by the Steelers and played three seasons before he was cut, played 1 game with the Bucs, and then signed with the Patriots. Chidi Iwouma played his rookie season with the Lions but then played the last 4 seasons with the Steelers. I think all 3 qualify as ex-Steelers without any stretching at all but it is not worh arguing about. I don't much about Mickens but I would be willing to bet he is a better CB than Hank and Chidi.

I didn't word that well, "stretching a little" was referring to Chidi that played for 3 or 4 NFL teams and an NFLE team. I didn't disagree with Poteat or Scott. Sorry bout that

I read that he was named a special teams captain for the Steelers last year. Odd that would get cut the following season, no?

Special Teams captains aren't immune to being cut. The Seahwaks just cut their's, LB Isiah Kaceyvinski (sp? sorry, have NO CLUE how to spell his name), and he was subsequently picked up by the Rams.

Chidi was the gunner of the kickoff and punt teams and was much more effective than co-Speial Teams captain Sean Morey in my opinon. I was surprised when Chidi was released on the final cut and Morey was kept but I guess the Steelers know better (at least I hope they do).
