Patriots to install field turf for Bears game (1 Viewer)

I'm a grass lover (not weed), so I never like seeing teams make the switch, but was the field really that bad? I know they have had issues with the field, and it not just being the Pats who have tore it up... But it must have been real bad underneath the sod to not even wait for the end of the year, or be able to repair it properly.

I couldn't imagine it's just Kraft being cheap. Didn't he fork over quite a bit of money for the stadium?

Better downgrade the Pats skill players because the bears D will run faster as well....

And Brady thought the Indy and Jets D was tough?

HAHAHAHAHA

Bear down mofo, bear down.

My aunt was saying that it was going to be the fastest they've ever installed it but she says that the field isn't great at first until the rubber settles in. So there might be some slipping for the first game.

The new field turf they use nowadays is awesome! It's not like the carpet they used to use. Players might even agree that the field turf might even be better than grass!

New Orleans has had this problem in their first home game. I've also heard stories about the rubber pellets causing problems, not settling from there being too much, and getting in player's eyes while getting tackled (Badger RB Anthony Davis).

This does go along with what I have heard from local press and players about Camp Randall's field turf. The Badger put it in 4 years ago, and beside a few rubber pellets issues, most have really liked it.

Snipped from an article in May of 2003

The FieldTurf surface used by the Seattle Seahawks ranked third-best overall in a survey in January [2003] by the National Football League Players Association. It was ranked ahead of 20 natural grass fields and trailed only the grass fields at Tampa Bay and Arizona.

I'm glad. Before the resodding, it was a beach between the hashes...good for summertime volleyball, but lousy for football. The resodding held up for the Colts game, but was completely ruined in the Jets game. There were complaints in past years by opposing teams about poor field conditions, to which I replied "Waa waa waa!", but this year takes the cake.

Edit: The OP mentioned upgrading the Pats skill players. There's some truth to this. The Pats have played outstanding in domes in the Brady era and have lit up the Bills in Buffalo in recent years.

On the few field turf fields I've played on the only problems have been the little shredded pieces getting into every nook and cranny. I don't see how they'd be anymore likely to be a nuisance as dirt and clods of grass in your eyes though.I'd get home after playing and as I was taking off my gear those shreds would be in my ###, under my crotch...everywhere. But the fields are nice.

Not college...a couple years in a semi-pro indoor league and an outdoor league. My college years were spent in the Corps. And Thanks!

I read a story earlier this year saying that NFL teams are not allowed to change their playing surface during the season. People were #####ing about how bad the Pats' field was, but they said there was nothing they could do because of league rules. What gives?

Was just scrolling down to post the exact same thing. Unfortunately I can't recall where I read this. Peter King? Gregg Easterbrook? Boston Globe?

I recall reading a Shark Pool thread about it.

More on field

With installation of a new synthetic grass playing field already underway at Gillette Stadium, the Patriots have invited members of the media to take photos at the stadium today.

Patriots spokesman Stacey James, in an email, confirmed that the new surface is FieldTurf.

The field is scheduled to be ready for the team's next home game, Nov. 26 against the Bears.

League officials had previously said there was a rule that wouldn't allow teams to switch surfaces during the year. But it was learned today through the league that there is no official rule.

The confusion resulted from a recommendation made by the NFL's competition committee that teams couldn't change surfaces during the season, although that recommendation was never converted into league policy.

News of the new field was first reported today by Patriots Football Weekly, the team's official newspaper, and was previously reported by NESN. The Patriots have had a natural grass playing field at Gillette since the facility opened in 2002.

New field at Gillette

The Patriots are installing a synthetic grass surface at Gillette Stadium starting today, according to Patriots Football Weekly, the team's official newspaper.

The story on the field is posted on the Patriots' team-operated official web site, Patriots.com.

The field is scheduled to be ready for the team's next home game, Nov. 26 against the Bears.

League officials had previously said there was a rule that wouldn't allow teams to switch surfaces during the year. But that rule apparently doesn't exist.

When the stadium was built, the field was supposed to be state of the art, because it's got the heating coils underneath, etc., but it's never been right. This year, I think it was the Rolling Stones show that put it over the edge. It was just ruined, then we had tons of rain, etc., and the Revolution season went to the finals. I think the league may have told them they HAD to do something about the turf prior to the Colts game because it was so bad. The rain was so awful Sunday for the Jets game, it was coming up in big chunks.

My aunt was saying that it was going to be the fastest they've ever installed it but she says that the field isn't great at first until the rubber settles in. So there might be some slipping for the first game.
