I think this is an indication of two things...1) McDaniels did a nice job last year under close scrutiny of Bill B2) With Mangini leaving and Pees being handed the DC duties, Belichick knows he'll have to focus on the defensive side more in 2006

I expect Mangini will name J. Davidson his OC once they get Heimerdinger to quit with no severence.

Both probably right.The guy he replaced was really loved by the Pats. Brady's play is always scrutinized. I'd say last two years he's had as tough a job as any QB coach could possibly have.
Pats rook Cassel seems to look good too so it seems he's done a real good job as a QB coach.
IIRC Mangini hooked up with BB at a young age too.

No suprise here. He was basically an OC apprentice last year and was promoted to a full time OC. The Pats have their own style of football and like a farm system for players BB is developing coaches who understand what he's trying to accomplish and can be promoted through the ranks like Mangini was. That philosophy is why I was pretty sure Bates wasn't going to get the DC job. It's a much easier transition to stay inhouse so these guys can hit the ground running. On a scale of 1-10 I give McDaniels a 7 for 2005. With all the injuries on the line and at RB and little depth at WR he a lot of adversity to deal with. Yet, there is little doubt that there was a serious drop off losing Weis. There were far too many plays that just didn't accomplish much. Plays that were not only unsuccessful but didn't put much pressure on the opposition. While overall the offensive #'s looked good there were too many times where the offense was inconsistent. Also, unlike Weis the Pats in 05 didn't seem to set up the opponent. With Weis it was like a chess match where a move now would reap a benefit later in the game. I'll be honest...while I always liked Weis it wasn't until he left that I really realized just how topnotch he was.All that being said McDaniels is a solid hire. He's young, very intelligent and should only get more skilled. The Pats O was definetly better and smoother as the season wore on. With the entire offense outside of Fauria and Dillon still being very young the Pats should continue to be a very good offense. Add in a few more playmakers this offseason and it could really go the next level.

Like Oz if you look behind the curtains you'll see the real power...for the Pats it's BB and for the Sox it's Lucchino. These youngsters are very talented but they're in very stable situations and have a lot of help from a powerful mentor.Boston good post.
What's with that town anyway? Epstein, now McDaniels - I realize Harvard is there, something must be in the water to make the young 'uns smarter.
