Pats signed Gutierrez today (1 Viewer)

I don't see why it would effect Cassell unless he played very badly.

Cassell was kept as the BU and Gutierrez was cut. I'm guessing they like Cassell a lot more than Gut.

The Pats tried to upgrade Cassell before the season started but could not get a deal. They brought Simms in before Brady even went down. Too late now to get a BU since they could not get someone up to speed with the entire playbook....

link?

Why would a practice squad signing ever affect a starter?
Exactly, if anything it is a bump to Kevin O’Connell stock. He will be activated as the #2 on game day.
Was going to start a separate thread on this. But Kevin O'Connell was a second attempt at finding a Brady heir.... Guit being the first. In fact, the Pats were often considering it a 3 QB race late (yeah, could be empty rhetoric), but obviously they've realized Cassel isn't the future. Otherwise, they wouldn't keep rolling the dice. It's not like they couldn't keep paying Cassel. If Cassel gets hurt.... losing two QBs in a season isn't extremely rare. Or if he just struggles for two weeks in a row, and/or O'Connell looks good in mop up duty. For deep leagues, Pats believers, or NFL playoff centric leagues (i.e. leagues that go thru the playoffs).... O'Connell isn't the worst handcuff nor shark move. Keep yer eyes peeled.

They intended to bring in Simms before Brady went down. The time a new QB needs to learn the playbook is the same regardless of whether Brady went down or not. So if they were considering bringing in another QB before Brady went down, they obviously felt they had enought time to get the new guy familiar with the playbook.I've heard it suggested that they canceled the Simms/Rattay visits when Brady went down because they didn't want to appear to be shaky on Cassell...which could have locker room implications. Can't say whether or not that's true but it's as good a reason as any I can come up with for why they canceled BU QB visits AFTER Brady went down. If that's their reason, either they have a clever, sneaky back-up plan or they really are committed to going with Cassell for a while.

I can't see that pats trusting rookie Kevin O’Connell..if cassel doesn't win games out their, or manage the team to wins, it will be gutierrez who comes up.the pats may see more potential in o'conner...long term, but if something falters w/ cassel..it will be gutierrez getting the nod
