Pats @ Steelers (1 Viewer)

I don't know. Feels like a big win. NE is solid and they had plenty to play for. Sure, PIT won't be a favorite in the playoffs but they're a team with a shot if things fall right. That's about the best one can hope for.
Well, it's the most we can hope for NOW.

But 4 weeks ago, the Steelers were 7-2-1 and in great shape. Losing in Denver was terrible, blowing a 23-7 home lead to San Diego was even worse, and losing to the Raiders was rock bottom. Those losses definitely take a bit of the luster away from beating the Patriots in a game where the Patriots did a helluva lot to help them out with penalties and dropped passes. It's not a win that should give most Steeler fans a lot of confidence moving forward regardless of the opponent.

Sure. No argument it would have been better to have won all those games. Or if the Patriots had been undefeated. I'm still calling it a big win.

It's a "big win" in the sense that they had to win it to keep any scrap of hopes at the division/playoffs alive.  No question there.  They really can't afford to lose again, period, but certainly needed to win both AFC games that remain on the schedule.  So far, so good.

In the sense that it rights the ship after blowing three eminently winnable (all which they were leading in the 4th quarter, mind you) in a row leading up to this one?  It certainly beats the alternative, but I have a feeling that this week was probably the Steeler's "Super Bowl" for 2018.  And that's coming from a Steelers fan.

Want me to think you have a legit shot in the playoffs, where you will likely have to play this same Patriots team again potentially their house, Pittsburgh?  Beat the Saints on the road next week.  I'll start feeling a lot better about your chances if you can prove you can drop a good team in hostile territory when you need to.

Sure.

I don't expect them at all to be able to win against the Saints in New Orleans. I don't expect hardly any team to win at New Orleans right now. But that's the trouble with single-game events where only wins and losses matter. The pendulum easily swings too far.

I don't have a lot of faith in them doing much in the postseason. But that doesn't change my take this was a big win. I think we're likely both saying near the same thing.

It was a HUGE win.  I feel sorry for my fellow Steelers fans that can't enjoy a must-win victory over the hated New England Patriots.

From Trey Wingo:

Big win Sunday for The @steelers , but now they play The @Saints : The Steelers will become the 13th team to play Tom Brady and Drew Brees in consecutive games. Of the previous 12, only the 2005 Broncos won both games.

Won't be at all surprised to see New Orleans win. Especially at home.

I'm happy they beat NE, obviously.  But it doesn't change my feeling about their chances for a deep playoff run.

I'm typically a much more optimistic fan and will continue to be so on game day.  By at the macro level they aren't one of the better teams in the NFL right now.

I agree this team has serious flaws but given a competent kicker, this team is probably 10-4 or 11-3.

The Chargers and Chiefs are the class of the AFC.   The Steelers got a few bad breaks against the Chargers and still only lost by 3.  The Chiefs kicked our xxx but they just lost to the Chargers.   I just want to make the playoffs because once there, anything can happen.

Agree with all of this.  Perhaps that 48 yard FG may fix the yips?  We can dream, can’t we?

I hope -- it actually was right down the middle which was a good sign because even his successful kicks have been to the right.

I have zero confidence in him though.   They won't do it but they should sign a new kicker.

He doesn’t even have confidence in himself.  You can tell by his body language.  I feel bad for him because he’s probably never dealt with anything like this before.

Agreed.   Bring someone else in and deactivate Boz and let him figure it out and regain his confidence next preseason

Where would you rate them from 1-32?

Their record says they are 5th in the AFC, so I'll say 5th in the AFC.
They're 4th in the AFC.  They also beat two of the teams ahead of them in record.

That said, I don't think the Pats are very good at all. The defense can't stop the run and their three key offensive pieces (Brady, Edelman, Gronk) are clearly in decline. The only saving grace is that the only complete AFC team at this point appears to be the Chargers, and the Patriots probably wouldn't play them until the AFC title game, if they both ever make it that far. That game would be most likely be in Foxborough.

Good Posting. I said this last week in the Fins game thread. The Pats are clearly a team in decline despite the Pat's homers stating otherwise.

Excellent points on the big three and defense!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Huh?  KC, LAC, HOU, NE are all ahead of them in record.  They only beat NE.

Aside from record, where do you rank them in the AFC on the criteria of how good they are right now? Any different? If no, do you assume how good every team is now is solely determined by their overall record?

I don't equate overall record with how good teams are currently playing, no.  You asked for a ranking and since I don't rank all the teams I used the Steelers record as a proxy for their ranking

Both conferences are completely up for grabs IMO. In the AFC the Colts probably playing the best right now, or at least most consistent... and they may not even make the play-offs. KCC w/ best record, but nothing to offer defensively and we know what usually happens to Andy Reid teams in the post season.

NFC is LAR vs NOS for #1 seed but I'm not sure either can beat the Bears.

Easy to see PIT run the table and go to the Super Bowl... just as easy to see them drop last 2 and miss the post season entirely.

Crazy year.

Ok. Thanks.

5th in the AFC is fine.

If the season ended today, these would be the AFC playoff seeds:

*Clinched playoff berth
1. Chiefs* (11-3), (conference record: 9-2)
2. Texans (10-4), (8-3)
3. Patriots (9-5), (6-4)
4. Steelers (8-5-1), (5-5-1)
5. Chargers* (11-3), (8-2)
6. Ravens (8-6, 6-4)

In the hunt:

Colts (8-6), (6-5)
Titans (8-6), (5-6)
Dolphins (7-7), (6-4)
Browns (6-7-1), (4-5-1)
I'd put them maybe at #4. I'd move the Chargers ahead and the Patriots behind. Maybe. I think you can make the case that game yesterday wasn't as close as the score.

But out of 16 AFC Teams, I'm happy with this as someone who pulls for the Steelers. NFL is hard. Being consistently in the hunt like this is pretty impressive in my opinion.

Pats are 3n5 on the road this year.....lucky their division has 3 complete chumps to help them win the next w games....if they play on wildcard weekend I dont see them winning on the road in round2...

Nice little 20 year run of this... maybe more.

Pats are 19-3 at home in the playoffs and 3-4 on the road during the Brady/Belichek era (super bowls excluded). Beating up on that division is a huge boost to their success.
