Someone will use an 08 first day pick on Oliver... Like Eric Weddle, he shut down Calvin Johnson when they faced off.

He requested feedback from the NFLPA prior to the draft. He wanted to declare but was disappointed with their 4th round grade. Remember way back before the underclassmen were declaring and I was bagging on Leon Hall and Marcus McCauley? Oliver was a guy I listed who I thought should come out. These corners just weren't very good. BUT! Tye Hill and Weddle both put it to Calvin Johnson. Anyone watching would have to agree. Hill just blanketed him and upset plays with the ball in the air. Weddle flat jammed him at the LoS and jumped his routes all day, twice knocking the snot out of Calvin in the first half, and really got in his head. Weddle dominated Calvin. Hill was just very fast reacting all day. Oliver's performance was mostly about Charles Johnson making life miserable for Reggie Ball. Ball was ripped here at FBG for that game and Calvin's poor performance. It was valid. Ball was bad, very bad. Charles Johnson was... sheesh, guys, this is an amazing DE prospect far better than most think. Oliver got to brag about stopping Calvin.

But again, I think had he come out, measured well... 4.40-4.42... hops and quicks... I think he could have made a little dent in that 4th round grade. Late 3rd, after Hughes and Wade. Pretty good upside. Nice open field tackler. Tough. Sounds like he may have some mental deficiencies though. :lmao:

I've been thinking about this. He may have had a better shot at the third in the real draft than in the supplemental. He did have a 4th round grade this year, and for the most part those grades are optimistic. This was a weak draft. It is an advantage to use a pick supplementally, get a player a year early, and have the time to develop him.

The academic suspension has to hurt his value some (lowers the existing 4th round grade).

Healthy, he would have gained ground on that grade if he could play out his senior season. Gaines Adams had a 4th round grade the year before and we all know what he did.

Next year is a balanced, deep draft. As always, it depends on 40-50 underclassmen to be reeeal deep. I would tentatively rank Oliver 3rd among returning senior CBs. It's a tight group in the top 5 behind Cason, and I would listen to an argument for him being ranked 2nd (where I have Chevis Jackson). But the underclassmen that surpass him may number a half dozen or more.

I liked Oliver last year. He needs an outstanding private work out for a team to cough up an 08 first day pick.

I think he will have that outstanding workout. It's true that those projecting him as a first rounder were assuming that he would just pick where he left off this year. Adams is a good parallel - if Oliver had returned and played at the same level he did in 06, progressing as the year went along, he would have surely been a first day pick, if not a first round pick. Here's a question : Ahmad Brooks and Tony Hollings both fetched first day picks - one had a torn ACL, the other was coming off serious character issues. I don't think Oliver's issues are nearly as large as those, and he's just as high quality a physical prospect as those two. I also think the cases of those two demonstrate that teams tend to slightly reach in a supp draft because of the added uncertainty - am I reaching to make that point? That's a big part of why I assumed Oliver would fetch a first day pick. Any team that really falls in love with him will be paranoid about other teams and probably pull the trigger a round early, imo.

No that's not reaching. That's valid. The supplemental is like a 32 participant auction with only 7 slightly different prices allowed. That's pressure! I think I was just hashing out thoughts that at first glance disagreed with you, but then concur with a qualifying need for an excellent workout. I see Oliver listed at 6-0 and 200. I think he's a little shorter, but he does have nice mass for a corner. I also read that sub 4.4 is not out of the question. I have to see that to believe it, but that would definitely guarantee him the day one pick from someone.

Picture of the game winning interception while covering Calvin.

Nice and thick as corners go. Especially for his age.

It should be noted Calvin was triple covered and the pass was way underthrown and off target. I can't credit Johnson or Moses either. It was just a terrible decision and throw by Ball, and it made Oliver a hero. They were near field goal range and just needed 10 yards to tie the game.
