Payton not happy with Bush (1 Viewer)

(Rotoworld) According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, Saints coach Sean Payton "clearly grew frustrated" with Reggie Bush during last week's game.Analysis: Bush drew Payton's ire when stepped out of bounds after a 9-yard gain instead of fighting for the first down. He was later pulled from the game in favor of Pierre Thomas when he was blown up on an attempted screen pass. Bush didn't play again until the final 30 seconds of the game.

I agree with the "kinda" part as Bell still had more touches than PT last week. This is not the dreamy scenario I had envisioned for PT earlier in the year! :excited:

For a while, I thought the Saints would do something semi-miraculous to keep Bush in 2010 ... but it's clear to me now that Bush needs a fresh start somewhere else. Won't 100% rule out a return, but something big and immediate would have to happen to change perceptions.

As a Bell owner, I am circling that week #16 game vs Tampa. Last time out, he had 2 rushing TD's.

This play was just before the 2-minute warning. He didn't even really need to "fight" for the first down. He probably could have picked it up fairly easily. But, he was clearly going out of bounds in an effort to stop the clock. He probably thought it would be easy enough to get the first down and he wanted to conserve time. A couple problems, though.1) He went out of bound BEFORE the 2-minute warning. The clock stopped until the refs replaced the ball and then they started it again. The Saints were lining up for another snap when the ref blew the whistle for the 2-minute warning. Several Saints then yelled at the ref "He went out of bounds!" Brees and Bush were definitely two players telling the ref this. The ref then explained to them that the clock only stops temporarily before the 2-minute warning.2) They didn't end up getting the first down. Since I don't think Bush really needed to fight for the first down, I think he clearly made the decision to get stop the clock rather than get the first down. After all, this is an offense that can usually get one yard whenever they want to. Of course, they punted, the Redskins touched the ball, the Saints recovered, the Saints threw an INT, the Redskins fumbled, the Saints returned it for a TD. If Bush just gets the first down, who knows what would have followed.

Wait, I thought Bush was a god in NOLA and would be a Saint for life? What's this crazy talk about him not being there in 2010?

That's incorrect though, the clock stops when a player goes out of bounds whenever it is within 5 minutes of the end of a half.

It's 2:00 at the end of the 1st half and 5:00 at the end of the 2nd half.

A "god" in whose eyes?Bush is no longer a fan favorite. I think the collective Saints' fandom is way too hard on Bush, but the fact is that at least 80% of us see Bush as an immense dissapointment. Marshall-Faulk-like production was very much expected. He's been an easy scapegoat for the Saints' disappointing 2007 & 2008 seasons, too.

From the team's operational standpoint, Bush is seen as an expensive luxury. So it becomes a question of dollars-&-cents versus the plug-&-play production of UDFA Pierre Thomas and cast-off Mike Bell. Aside: Bush's potential departure is why I think the Saints will spend a second or third in the 2010 draft on an RB ... still think Payton wants that "sheer talent" RB on the roster.

It's worth noting that when the game was on the line late and the Saints needed to rally, Bush was back on the field.
