Pennington's arm weaker than normal? (1 Viewer)

I haven't watched a full Jets game this season before this past weekends game against the Jags. Was Chad's arm weaker than it has been? Because if that's really his arm strength I have no idea how he's done so well so far this season. The Jags defenders were hardly playing the WRs, they just sat back and played Pennington, counting on their ability to get to the ball before it got to the WR. Chad's throws were painfully slow. I say painfully because I've always been a fan of Pennington's and was under the impression that he had turned it around this season. But if that is all the arm strength he has left, I'd guess that other teams will just watch what the Jags did and copycat Chad to the bench soon. He might be a guy to sell now if you can get anything for him. Base on what I saw, his arm is either getting weaker or he's been very fortunate so far this season.

If anything, Pennington's arm-strength has been better than before - see his long passes to Cotchery and Coles in earlier games this season.

In the Jets-Jags game, Pennington largely threw to covered WRs. His first pick was a tip off the WR, so that doesn't count, but the other two were throws into coverage. Given the weakness of the running game, I think it would be a huge mistake ot trade Pennington on the assumption that every team has the skills and personell to do what the Jags did, or the assumption that Pennnington will suddenly nosedive and havea an awful game every week. The first five weeks were the hard part of the Jets schedule - going forward they play the Clevalands, Houstons, and Miamis of the world.

We'll see. Like I said I'm a fan of Pennington's and really hope he can get him career back on track. But watching the game at the stadium I noticed that the Jags were almost always facing Pennington on pass plays and playing the ball instead of the WR. I watched it again on Tivo to confirm what I saw. Chad seemed to have almost no arm strength and the Jags were very comfortable to simply wait on the pass and break on the ball. Hopefully it was just a bad game, but I'd keep a close eye on him if I was counting on him in fantasy.

Arm strenghti really isn't Chad's game - touch and accuracy. He has been very good this year so far until Sunday -

Jax is a nightmare matchup for the JEts. Plus the coaching staff just conceded the game in the 1st quarter. I would actually buy Chad from a frustrated owner. His schedule is very soft and he probably can be nabbed for a reasonable deal after this week. Watch him dissect the Fins this week.

Per Pennngton (no link):

He threw the ball incorrectly which affected his strength or the amount of mustard he could put on the ball (more shoulder stress). He said it was to his benifit that he was out for two years. He had to learn to throw the ball correctly to take the load off his shoulder. The two years also allowed him the time to make the change.

Pennington is successful because he is smart and accruate. His weakness is how he falles when he gets hit (He puts his arm out). Luckily this year he is not getting hit very much.

The Dolphins held Brady to 140 passing yards yesterday. That might not be a good matchup for Pennington. He might throw up another stinker in Week 6.

I think you hit the nail on the head he has looked painful in his delivery I dont see him making it through the season.

Clemens is a good buy right now.

I would tend to agree, although Dave Hutchinson of the Newark Star-Ledger told us on the Audible last week that this is Chad's team and Clemens is "a year away at best" - I asked him "What would it take for the team to make a switch from Pennington to Clemens?"

Its Chad's team this year barring injury - Clemens will get some reps in pre season and as the #2 QB - the real QB battle will be in the summer of 2008.

Chad has always had the deliberate delivery - I haven't heard any issues with regard to his shoulder condition. He'll obviously never have the arm strength of many of his peers, but as long as the accuracy is there, he should be fine.

This is the first time in a couple of offseasons that Chad is not rehabbing an injury, and is focusing on 1) strengthening his body and not rehabilitation it and 2) continuing to learn Schottenheimer's offensive system. He's able to take all of the normal practice reps now that he is "healthy", and doesn't have the distractions or detractions that would normally be associated with a Chad Pennington offseason. People truly underestimate the importance of repetitions in practice, which are inevitably tapered down when a player is injured for part of, if not more of the offseason/training camp - and I think this will play the biggest role in why I feel Pennington will have a solid year. While I don't buy into the whole "the addition of Thomas Jones will open up things for Pennington" theory, I do think that as a whole, this entire offense will be improved from last year, led by a currently healthy Chad Pennington. The situation greatly parallels that of Curtis Martin 2004 when he cited that much of his success was due to his ability to focus on getting stronger and playing football in the offseason, and not rehabbing all of the lingering injuries that he accumulated in the season prior.

The addition of Thomas Jones is a major improvement. Teams will have to respect the play action pass, which is one of Chad's greatest stregnths. The only mistake i think the jets made this off-season was not addressing the right side of the O-line. They stink.

He's always had a candy arm. Had him on my FF Squad a few years back. Terrible... Hes come into his own since his injury though, like someone mentioned earlier, arm strength isnt really his game.

Kellen Clemens Struggles

Jun 11th 2007 12:16PM Star-Ledger

Backup QB Kellen Clemens, a second-year pro and heir apparent to Chad Pennington, has been erratic during OTAs, but Mangini attributes it to the installation of new plays and experimentation. Raiders castoff Marques Tuiasosopo and rookie free agent Brett Ratliff (Utah) are the other quarterbacks on the roster.

This is what I heard in an interview a year ago:

After the second surgery he had very limited strength to throw the ball using his old delivery. He had to totally redevelop his throwing motion during rehab to make it more efficient. That is what saved his carear and explains why he is throwing better and more accuate passes than he ever has in his life.
