Buddy of mine was #####ing that Cassel got passed over for a Pro Bowl spot (and specifically, he says that he deserved a spot over Peyton Manning). To be honest, I haven't paid enough attention to have any idea whether or not he deserves it. Based on stats it looks like he's having a fantastic season. Then again, Peyton has completed more passes than Cassel has attempted. Is Cassel really having a Pro-Bowl caliber season, or is he just a mediocre QB benefiting from a strong run game, easy schedule, etc?

I'm a KC Homer, and I'm still terrified every time he lets the ball go -- assuming its gonna hit a defender directly in the chest. Luckily the offensive line has developed way ahead of schedule, and they can really run the #### out of the ball.

I'll give him this -- he's done a great job managing games. Limiting mistakes, executing red zone and goal line play action excellently, and scrambling for yards when there is nothing there.

Surprisingly good season -- yes. Pro Bowl -- noooo way.

This is pretty much what I figured, but I haven't seen much of KC this year.

College QB scouting reports seem like they are accurate way more often than not. Cassel went to USC. After Carson Palmer graduated, he and Leinart competed for the starting gig and Cassel lost.

Positives on the scouting report:

1. very strong arm.

2. likes to throw deep.

Negatives:

1. not very mobile.

2. has trouble reading coverages - not a very good football mind.

A gameplan when a QB like this is running your offense is to simplify the offense and try to limit his mistakes. The Chiefs offense seems to be tailored to suit him with lots of rushing attempts and few passes. When he passes, he has a strong arm and can make all the throws making it harder to defend him.

Looking at the numbers, the 3 targets are Bowe with 67 balls caught, TE Moeaki with 46, and Jamaal Charles with 43. Without watching the Chiefs, I'd guess the offense is simplified to the point where Cassel looks at Bowe, and if its not there, he dumps it off to the RB or TE depending on the play. Other than that he just hands off. Its a living.

Every time I watch Cassel play, I think, "How are his numbers this good?" The one thing I will give hm is that he doesn't seem to make a lot of bad decisions, which is why his INTs are always pretty low.

Seems to me that he's done ok this year, not great, but from what I've seen you don't really notice him much except when he finds Bowe on those big plays. Looks like KC is more about Jones/Charles and don't turn it over with bad decisions out of the QB spot. I wouldn't think he has earned a Pro Bowl spot though, if that's what your asking.

You may be right, but this could also reflect that the Chiefs don't have much talent at WR other than Bowe.

Not that accurate. Decent arm, can make all the throws, but I don't think I'd say it's "very strong." He'll take some shots but is not known as a guy who likes to throw it deep; he's better at the 12-15 yard ins and flags. He's got good mobility (doesn't have the best pocket presence but that's improving; his actual mobility is not in question). Wouldn't say he has trouble reading coverage - he used to be hesitant, and may still be a little, and he's probably a little slow in progressing in his reads, but overall I can't see how this point holds. He's certainly a hard worker and lives in the classroom, ala Peyton Manning. The only thing I'd say is that Cassel is definitely improving. He's not the Pro Bowl guy right now but he might get there, which is a lot more than anyone -- myself included -- ever thought possible. He's shown immense improvement through this season, and it's logical to think he continues to improve next year. Especially if the Chiefs add another WR, which would give them a seriously dynamic set of weapons.

3,000 yds and 27 TD vs 5 Int...that's pretty good even against the California Penal All Stars. He was sacked 47 times in 2008, 42 last year...only 21 this year. Amazing what a QB can do when he has time to throw.

QB rating of 98.8 as well. He could have been voted in and still would make a good alternate.

Cassell played well this year, but let's not go nuts. He didn't have a better season than Brady, Rivers, or Manning. (I think he is in the next tier of AFC QBs along with Roethlisberger and Flacco.)

I'm not surprised he is progressing...watching him in 2008 you could see he had legit talent but also had a lot of catching up to do. He's not an elite talent but he's a QB that has solid physical skills, is still improving, works very hard and has quality leadership ability (there is no doubt he was paying attention when he was with BB and Brady). He'll never be an all-world gunslinger but he will be a QB that you can win with and his teammates will believe in...the Pats won 11 games with him in 2008 and now the Chiefs have pretty much come out of nowhere to win the AFC West...that's a pretty good start for a QB who had a very long layoff between High School and starting in the NFL.

TD to INT ratio is extremely good. Of course any QB with such a dominating ground game, excellent protection, and an All-Pro WR is going to look good if he makes good decisions. I would hope no one from KC makes the Pro Bowl though, as it would mean there are other matters to attend to.

If Weis does leave it doesn't help IMO. I think Weis is one of if not the best OC in the NFL. He isn't going to completely suck next year, but I think he drops a little.

This changed when he ran the Patriots offense. He scrambled far more than Brady ever did and they had him throw the whole passing tree of routes in his time with the Pats.
