Percy Harvin adds 10 pounds... (1 Viewer)

Maybe he will be a 3rd down back as well as slot receiver?

Percy Harvin took part in a big autograph event at Earle Brown Heritage Center in Brooklyn Center on Saturday and the Vikings second-year wide receiver stopped and chatted for a few minutes when he was finished.

The thing that caught our attention immediately was that Harvin looked noticeably bigger and in tremendous shape. Harvin said he's added about 10 pounds of muscle this offseason while working out in Florida. He said he weighs 207 pounds now but said ideally he would play at around 200 pounds this season.

"Normally when I workout I put on a couple of pounds," he said. "I wanted to be stronger. I know I'll probably lose some so I'll probably play at 202, 200. That will be good for me."

Harvin said he's excited for the upcoming season after winning rookie of the year honors and earning a Pro Bowl berth last season. He certainly made a smooth transition to the NFL both as a receiver and kickoff returner.

Harvin set a Vikings record for all-purpose yards with 2,081. He finished tied for first among all rookies in receiving yards (790) and receptions (60). He ranked fourth in the NFL in kickoff return average (27.5 yards) while returning two for touchdowns.

Harvin said his body feels fresh compared to this point last season when he went through a number of workouts for teams leading up to the draft.

"I know everything now so everything is going smooth," he said. "I don't have to do all the Combine stuff, the wear and tear. I'm just studying now so hopefully I will have a dominant impact next year."

The Vikings veterans will report for voluntary offseason workouts on Monday. The younger players began two weeks ago. Harvin has stayed in Florida and was non-committal when asked if he will take part starting Monday at Winter Park. Again, we stress the workouts are voluntary.

"I don't know yet," he said. "I talked to coach. I'll come up and workout a little bit. But we'll talk and figure something out."

It seems the only thing that slowed Harvin as a rookie were his severe migraines. Harvin has dealt with migraines since he was 10 and had several problems this season. He missed one game and a number of practices while dealing with severe effects. He visited Mayo Clinic late in the season seeking a plan for how to treat them when they occur.

Harvin said he's suffered from migraines at different times this offseason.

"It's off and on," he said. "Still working them out. Hopefully we'll keep working at it. My mom has had them for 30 years. They come here and there. It's just something that hopefully I can contain. But I've talked to a lot of doctors. I don't think there's too much that can stop it."

I believe Harvin will factor more into the run game. 5-10 carries a game and about 4-5 receptions to boot...drafted as a WR but will have multiple skills to add points.

I was harsh on Harvin coming out of college, and I still am not in love with his skills(please don't shoot), but I am quickly on board this year because of Favre. he knows how to utilize this guy but when Favre hangs it up finally, Harvin's value drops a lot for me.

Harvin will be a very nice WR2/3 for a lot of teams this season.

I like Harvin a lot but I doubt he sees any 10 carry games. I think 3ish a game sounds about right.

I doubt it. I don't think they're going to intentionally put someone with migraine issues into more heavy-hitting situations than they already did with him last year. Reports are he's still having migraines this offseason so it's probably something they are going to have to gameplan around for a while.

TD got them on his way to rushing for 2,000 yds.

If Harvin gets 8-11 touches per game from scrimmage, I will be thrilled.........and not the least bit surprised, js a year off on my projection as I thought they woukd give it to him last year.

I think that being in the system a year will prove vitally important to a kid like him, as he's smart and tough enough to handle more responsibility (I.e., "load" on offense). I will probably be in the minority (once again), but with 150 touches from scrimmage, you're looking at 1400+ total yards (receiving + rushing). I'd say that'd be WR1 numbers, PPR as well as non-PPR. The potential is scary, and realistic!

I agree completely that Harvin could produce WR1 numbers, in fact he was a fine WR2 this year despite missing a game and being relatively uninvolved in a couple others. I mean, there wasn't really much of a difference between Harvin and guys like Colston or even Sidney Rice(assuming you don't count week 17) and he produced at or above guys like Jennings and Holmes and he did all that as a rookie who didn't see as many snaps as he's likely to see this year. Its pretty easy to see Harvin with 1,000 yards and 7-8 Td's receiving. If his rushing production jumps up, and if he can maintain a Td or 2 in the return game, its not unlikely at all that he'll be a top-10 WR.I think outside of maybe Jonathan Stewart, Percy Harvin is the best buy low guy there is right now. if you don't get these guys now, you never will.

Chester Taylor is gone right? Maybe Harvin can sneakily add some of CTs carries to his WR and return stats.

The migranes do concern me though.

I was talking with my cousin this weekend who lives in MInnesota and he had heard that presently Albert Young is the backup, they may draft a RB for some competition but the part I had not heard before is that the Vikes may use Reynaud and not Harvin in some backfield formations. That surprised me. Anyone else hear anything like this? As I said, this is what my cousin said he heard so I have nothing to validate this rumor.

Yes. That's been the rumblings around here. They really haven't seemed too interested in bringing in any of the has-been free agent backs, and there were a couple of positive comments made about Young last year. They have reportedly already moved Reynaud to RB (he was an all-state - or something like that - RB in high school).I wouldn't count on Harvin getting more carries out of the backfield.
