PHILADELPHIA -- The Phillies have upgraded at third base after all, reportedly signing free-agent third baseman Pedro Feliz to a two-year deal. An agreement was first reported by ESPN.com's Jayson Stark, and it is believed to be pending a physical. For their part, the Phillies said the deal isn't quite complete. "We haven't finalized anything, but have been talking to his representatives," Phillies assistant general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said late Monday afternoon. Feliz, who hit .253 with 20 homers and 72 RBIs with the Giants in 2007, has a reputation for being a fine defensive player. He would likely step in as the starter, and prompt a trade of Wes Helms, a move that might address the team's pitching needs. Helms had been speculated to be heading to Florida to replace departed Miguel Cabrera, though the Marlins have added former Rays second baseman Jorge Cantu since then.
I've seen a lot of terrible ABs from the guy over the years but he can field the position and hit with power. He had no business hitting in the middle of the Giants order. I suppose Feliz is an upgrade over Helms, Abraham Nunez, Greg Dobbs and whomever else the Phils were planning to put out there. It's really saying something that the Giants don't have anybody better to fill the position in 2008 :bag:

Essentially Feliz = Helms + Nunez so this is addition by subtraction if they can actually move Helms. Dobbs will play some 3B and LF and be a solid PH again. The Phils should set the alltime MLB strikeout mark by around August 1st.

 He's better than what the Phils had...and now there will be a steady breeze coming from homeplate throughout the year.

 Feliz struck out 70 times in 557 ABs in 2007.

Helms struck out 62 times in 280 ABs in 2007.

Plus Feliz was a better hitter with RISP then Helms. The only knock on Feliz over Helms is that Feliz walks about once a month which lowers his OBP.

Defensively Helms looks like a little leaguer out there and Feliz very well may be the best defensive third baseman in the NL. This will help the Phils in late game situations as it will take require less moves from Uncle Charlie.

This is a great point. The best part of this deal may be the fact that Manuel will have to make less managerial decisions. I know thats not exactly what you're looking for from your manager but.......

I think the way he handled the 3B situation was actually one of the best things he did last year.

This Giants fan has also seen a lot of bad ABs from Feliz, but he's a valuable player if you can bat him 7th or so. He should hit a lot of HR in that bandbox in Philly, too, as long as people throw him fastballs. Sliders on the outside corner, well, not so much.

The correct spelling is Unca Chollie.

This is about the best possible fit Pedro could possible get. Pedro's been here in SF a long time and from what I've heard he's a great guy so good luck and all, but don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Yeah, he will hit 6th or 7th, depending on whether Unca Chollie wants to put him ahead of Jenkins/Werth. He shouldn't.He should bat him 8th, as Carlos Ruiz should have a better OBP, but Unca Chollie likes to bat his catchers 8th no matter who they are. What the move does do is give us roster flexibility. We had to carry three third basemen last year. We don't anymore.
