Peter King: Baltimore is "locked in" to Matt Ryan at 1.08 (1 Viewer)

Jason Wood

Zoo York
Was listening to Colin Cowherd on ESPN Radio at lunch and caught the tail end of Peter King's appearance. The only discussion I heard in its entirely related to the Ravens. King said that the Ravens are "locked in" to Matt Ryan at 1.08 and, if he's gone, they will aggressively look to trade down into the low 1st round where they will select....wait for it....Chad Henne.

:)

I wonder if he mentioned anything about moving up to get him??? As a KC fan, I am just curious...

Sorry I should've been more clear. He said in his view, the Ravens have no interest in moving up, but think Ryan will be there at 1.08 for them. If Ryan is not, King says they very much want to move down and take Henne rather than drafting BPA as they've done in the past.King is by no means infallible, but I appreciated how decisive he was with this one.

much obliged!!! thats what i thought... i would love Balt. to be interested to move up to #5 so KC can get more picks, but oh well, it is what it is...

Why not? I think what we're finding is that Michigan wasn't running a very QB friendly system.

I expect Ryan, Henne, and Brohm to all have equally successful careers.

Yeah, I'll admit I'm not quite as sold on Henne, but I can think of at least one other Michigan QB who came out of nowhere to have an okay NFL career..... :hey:

Good guesses. The correct answer though is Minneapolis' own Howard T. Abbott....who lead the Wolverines at QB during the 1889 season, then went on to an illustrious career as President of the National Federation of Listmakers (NFL)...a forefather to Encyclopedia Britannica and Wikipedia. Thanks for playing though! :)

:excited:

Seems kind of odd that Baltimore is basically giving away their draft plans four days before it happens.

I imagine there is some manipulation in there as well. For example, if Ryan goes @3 the phone in Baltimore will start ringing with people wanting to get ahead of Cincy for Ellis.

That doesn't surprise me. The ravens need qb help and although I'm not crazy about ryan going 1:3 I think 1:8 is a good spot for him.

Well keep in mind this is merely the assertion of Peter King. It could either be a case where he feels he has a real scoop OR he owes the Ravens front office a favor and is playing up some misinformation. Either way, it's an interesting assertion and one we'll know soon enough whether it was a smokescreen.

Wouldn't it make more sense to trade up from 2.07? Or just stay there?

Maybe I'm a sadist & am just used to not having good QBs to root for, but as a Ravens fan I really don't like taking Ryan there. Being in ACC country, I've watched him quite a bit & don't think he's all that special. I think the Ravens can draft a better player there that will also fill a need.

Well, last year the Eagles took Kevin Kolb with their early pick in the 2nd, when conventional wisdom was that he would have lasted until their late pick in the 2nd. But either the Eagles coveted/valued him just that much, or they had intelligence that another team would have taken him before their second pick in the 2nd. Same thing could be at work here.

Henne isn't much of a reach in the late first when you look at the guys who have gone roughly in that range:

JP Losman

Aaron Rodgers

Jason Campbell

Brady Quinn

Kevin Kolb

John Beck

Drew Stanton

Kellen Clemens

Patrick Ramsey

Henne is in the same ballpark as a prospect. Not as good as Rodgers or Quinn, but comparable to someone like Clemens or Campbell.

There are going to be three first round quarterbacks taken.
Andy, you honestly believe that? Wow. I guess it's not out of the question given recent NFL draft results, but do you really think some of these teams are so hungry for a young QB that they'll move back into the 1st and grab one? I presume you aren't expecting those 3 QBs to be drafted by teams picking at their current spots, right?

I think 33 picks in, there will be 3 QBs gone. Roughly.... Ryan b/w 3 and 8....Henne b/w 22 and 26...Brohm b/w 29-33.

Sad thing is, I would be MUCH happier if the Eagles used a 2nd rounder on either Henne or Brohm than Kevin Kolb :goodposting:

I still think Brohm goes before Henne. But to answer JW's question, I expect one team to take either of Henne/Brohm with their pick and another (Atlanta primarily) to trade back up for the other.

Quite possibly, but I'd think it would be more difficult to get good value to move from the 1.08 to where Henne should go, rather than swap from 2.07 to 1.24-1.31 range. I would think Tennessee, Seattle, Jacksonville, San Francisco , or Green Bay would jump at the chance to slide down a few picks for an additional 3rd or a 09 pick. Tennessee especially if their best player on their board is a WR, with many equal WRs available - and they're rumored to be highly considering moving down anyway.
