In this offseason, Peterson said he'll work to improve pass protection and running routes, while trying to bulk up from 218 pounds to about 225 or 230 without losing speed.

"That would be pretty nice. I don't think too many guys would be excited to see me at 230 two times a year," he said.

Peterson said the extra weight will help him endure the long season and make him "more explosive."
If he could get up to 230 and not lose his speed, that could make him scary good and we could definitely see a 2000 yd season.

Think if he could get to 300 and not lose his speed.

Using combine data, the heaviest RB I can find with his speed (4.40) is Chris Henry at 230lbs. I think if AP does this he will become less elusive (harder to change direction) and will shorten his shelf life (more wear on knees).Adding some muscle is probably a good idea, but bulking up to 230 will kill his career IMO. Since when is AP a "run you over" type of player? His game excels on speed/shiftiness and making defenders miss.

"Since when is AP a "run you over" type of player?"HUH? Have you seen ANY of the games he's played in?
My first thought as well. Sure he's incredibly shifty and elusive as well, but the guy can and does dish out punishment.
Yes he can, and does. But he gains alot more yardage by avoiding contact, not seeking it out. If he'd rather bulk up to 230 and ONLY be able to run people over, have at it. IMO his true greatness is his ability to do it all, and bulking up will only limit him. I didn't quite explain myself the first time.

I agree with you. It's not like his size has ever been an issue. If it ain't broke...It's not as though adding 15 pounds will magically make him a better pass blocker either, so really there doesn't seem to be any reason for him to want to change his build drastically.

Prediction for February 2010 Shark Pool thread: "Peterson wants to slim down to 218 to increase his speed and shiftiness."

Adding 5 lbs would be good. Adding 15 not so much. When I went from 195 to 225 I did get stronger without losing much speed, but the ankles/knees/back/shin-splints got terrible. Definately not worth the strength gains if you ask me, and he's already so effective with a spotty injury history I would hate to see him tempt fate.

How about learning to hold onto the ball?
[Madden] Adrian Peterson has probably got the firmest hand shake of any man I've ever met. You wouldn't believe how strong his hands are /[Madden]

That is why he is so dangerous. Lay back to avoid getting crushed and he jukes around you and is gone. Hunker down to take a lick and you look up at him from your back and he is gone....That being said, I really hate hearing players talk about adding or reducing bulk. I can't think of a single time where it worked out well for the player. Usually it's with aging players like Marshall Faulk late in his career so I don't have much basis for comparison for a guy like Peterson. I just don't like when guys do this...
