Peyton Manning currently has 2872 yds through 9 games. That's an average of 319 yds/game (he's topped 300 yds in 8 of 9 games this year).

That projects out to a total of 5105 yds for the season.

The remaining schedule:

@Baltimore

@Houston

vs. Tenn

vs. Denver

@Jax

vs. NYJ

@ Buff

Out of that list, only the game at Buffalo looks to be an outside, poor weather game. However, on that list, Buffalo, NYJ, and Denver are top 10 pass defenses.

So, does he break it? If playoffs are locked up, do they keep him in and give him a chance to break it? Does Dungy no longer being coach factor into this?

Voted "No". But it really depends on if they get any pressure for HFA in the playoffs. Otherwise, I see him playing 3 quarters at most each of the last 2 games.

No, because as the previous poster said, he's likely not going to be playing 100% of the game the final 2-3 weeks of the season since they'll have that division wrapped up.

It is too bad Dungy did not let Peyton throw 50 TD's. No one is really seriously challenging the Colts. I think Peyton sits out 2 or 3 second halves late in the season. I think Peyton goes over 4900, but falls short.

If he's anywhere near the record he'll do it. Or at least try. Peyton Manning loves the stats. He got Reggie Wayne like 12 catches in a game to end the 07 season so Wayne could have the receptions lead. He played just enough in the final game last season to get his 4000 yards. He won't let an opportunity for such an accomplishment slip through his hands if at all possible.

He can't keep putting up 319 yards per game. Eventually he'll have one game where they're just in control early and he only needs to throw for 200 yards or so, which will put him off the pace.

To break this kind of record you really need those one or two games where you throw for 400+ yards, and I just don't see that happening this year. The Colts are just too good, they never need that many passing yards to win a game. Brees had the perfect situation last year where he was on a team that could get down big early and he could just air it out all game long. He threw for 420+ twice last year, and still came up short of the record.

Marino threw for 400+ in four games the year he broke the record, including a game with 470.

The Colts use their passing game as their control game. The Colts haven't really tried to grind it out yet this season, and I don't think they will start. Manning is going to try to exceed 300 yards every game he can.

I would not be shocked if Brady makes a decent run at 5000 himself. He has 2739, on pace for 4869. A lot will depend on how he plays today since the Jets have the best secondary he will face for the remainder of the season. Normally you would say the weather would keep his stats down but that should not be the case this season. His final 6 games include 2 domes (NO, Hou) and a game in Miami.

Also worth noting is that Marino threw for 470, 404, and 370 yards in his last three games in 1984. Even if Peyton plays those weeks with them having the #1 seed probably locked up by then, it's unlikely he'll play anywhere near enough to put up big numbers like that.
