Gil Brandt has reported that Payton Manning could miss week 1 of the regular.

Also reported on Sirius yesterday that some people "in the building" were concerned that Manning's injury could end his football career.

This could be huge news! Huge, I tell ya! :D

If they thought it could be career-ending why would they give him a new 5 yr, $90 mil contract  But yeah, it would suck if he has to miss a week or 2 for sure.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay says his team must be prepared to start the season without injured quarterback Peyton Manning, and the club might need to find a veteran backup.

Irsay posted his comments Saturday morning on his Twitter account, less than 12 hours after the Colts lost their eighth straight preseason game.

"We r evaluating the QB sitch,(hash)18 healing but we must 2 b prepared 4 early season possibility without him, defense has 2 pick it up,big time!," Irsay wrote.

During a conference call with reporters, coach Jim Caldwell was asked again when he expected Manning to be back. Caldwell still hasn't provided a timeline for Manning's return and says Manning still hasn't been cleared to practice.

"Bottom line, we truly do not know when he will be ready," Colts president Bill Polian told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen. "Once the nerves regenerate properly, he'll be ready. When that happens, he'll be ready to ramp up immediately. It's impossible to predict."

(KFFL) Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay said the team is looking into their quarterback situation because they want to be prepared for the possibility of QB Peyton Manning (neck) not being ready for the start of the regular season.

If you don't have another QB on your roster anyway to lean on for 1-2 weeks, its your own fault anyway. I'm not worried and I'm not selling

Anyone else think its really weird and amateur-ish that Irsay has been posting updates like this, in this manner, on Twitter?

Just like the "we r not drafting Pryor, who would u all vote 4 out of veteran FA QB's" tweet (paraphrased). Just weird and bush league. Hire a PR guy to tweet that #### from your team's twitter. Don't do it yourself as the damn owner.

I agree. Very bizarre thing to say publicly. First, you pretty much just publicly insulted your backup QB's. Second, don't you think discussions about which veterans you should or shouldn't sign are best kept in house rather than have an 'American Idol' style voting contest? Just very, very bizarre

well... you know what they say! Where there's smoke....

...there's people getting high, posting dumb stuff on the interwebs.

For me this situation and the unknown of when he will return takes him out of the top 6 into the next lower teir.

(RotoWire) Manning (neck) says he will not play in the preseason and his availability for the regular season will be a close call. "I won't play in [the] preseason. I am going to need these next two weeks, every single second," Manning told CBSSports.com. "I think in two weeks I'll have a better answer for you. I'm going to need these next two weeks to get even healthier."Analysis: Manning's comments come after owner Jim Irsay earlier on Saturday said that the Colts need to be prepared for the possibility of playing without him at the start of the season. It sounds like Manning's recovery hasn't progressed as fast as he'd like, but few details have been provided on the recent status of his injury. The Colts were previously very optimistic Manning would be ready for Week 1, but now Manning and team officials have become more guarded in their outlook. With Curtis Painter struggling the first two preseason games, the Colts offense could be in trouble the first few weeks if Manning is out. Watch to see if the Colts sign a veteran backup as an indication if they think Manning really has a shot to miss a regular season game.

Didn't the 3rd Manning brother have some sort of spinal condition that ended his career prematurely? I wonder if their conditions are related.

If they think they might need to sign a vet QB, what are they waiting for? Whoever they sign won't have much time to prepare if he is going to be needed week 1.

I'm kind of terrified. I've bumped Manning down to 7th, and frankly prefer Vick, Rodgers, Rivers, and Brady anyway. I'd take Brees & Romo over him right now as well, even if I wouldn't normally. Problem is, while I've done that, I haven't really let it sink in and I haven't moved down Wayne, Collie, and Clark yet.

I draft #1 overall in my 12 team PPR, and see Wayne at the 2/3 turn about 50% of the time. At this point I think I need to start passing on him. Just don't want to waste a pick on a dude that has a Mystery QB throwing to him week 1. And I'd been loving getting Collie at the 4/5 turn when my first 3 picks point me in that way, but I suppose I have to start letting him go as well.

ARGH. Colts have been a key to my success (and I'm sure many others) for almost a decade, and I feel lost without them. I kept saying "Eh, Peyton will be fine" but for some reason today feels different.

I can't believe a grown man wrote that. Just can't.
Agree. I thought it was strange the owner put that out. More likely some PR guy intern was relaying a message. Regardless of the message, the content and source seemed legit.

I usually don't mind spelling errors, but the title of this thread blows. Feel like starting a thread titled Dominique Sue.

Those commenting on Irsay obviously don't know much about him or follow him on twitter. He is a very strange character, not your usual NFL GM. He started his twitter about 6 or 8 months ago, and was giving away thousands of dollars, cars, tickets, all kinds of stuff every day through random trivia contests, riddles, song lyrics, all kinds of goofy ####. I'm sure his assistants and handlers can't stand it, but the guy has generated himself quite a following now (50,000 followers. Not bad for a NFL Owner.)

He often types just like that on his twitter. Every other tweet is a random song lyric from Bob Dylan or something like that. Definitely surprised at all that he would poll the fans on thoughts for Vet QBs. Very in character for him.

Really.....downgrade? Seems a bit harsh. Right now they are talking a week or two. I wouldn't downgrade anyone just yet. But at my draft today, I will be talking it up that everyone should downgrade every Colt player, so they can fall to me.......

I'm sure you didn't mean to say NFL GM.

Seriously. Shouldn't a true NFL fan know the difference between Peyton and Payton?

I don't know about that. I know the difference between morning and mourning, but I still sent an email once using mourning out of context.

I hear ya...I find that if I am in a hurry to type something and not paying attention my mind will default to a word that is phonetically the same - probably the most embarrassing example was when I used witch for which. :bag:
