Philadelphia professional sports… best time EVER to be a fan?!?!? (1 Viewer)

The Phillies won their first playoff game last night in over a decade with a thrilling 9th inning comeback.

The Eagles are the ONLY undefeated team left in the NFL.

Best time ever to be a Philly sports fan?

:coffee:

Most of you kids are too young to remember but 1949-50 had the Eagles taking their second consecutive NFL championship and the Phillies Whiz Kids winning their first pennant in 35 years.

I'm part of the '10 years old in 1980' crowd. Living 45 minutes from Philly at the time, I have to admit the hype going on at the time was intense!

Syracuse nats also went to the finals, for those who could see into the future

Go Philly- they have usually been my 2nd favorite sports teams as my dad was born in Philly (moved to Detroit around age 10) and I still have lots of family there. He fully adopted the local Detroit sports teams but I figured Philly was next closest connection. Randall Cunningham was one of my earliest favorite NFL players and my relatives sent me a few Phillies shirts/hats in 93 when they won the division. Detroit pro sports have been a wasteland for 10 years so at least Philly is doing well.

1980 was a fun year. I was 16 and was at game 6 of the World Series when they won the championship. I also saw 2 other championships won in that era: 1976, I was at the Spectrum for game 4 when the Canadians swept the Flyers 4-0 in the NHL finals, and in 1983, I was at game 5 against the Orioles when the Phillies lost the World Series 4 games to 1.

I was at the 1980 and 1983 games also. I was 9 in 1980.

I’ve followed the phillies all year and would be cool to see them in the nlcs. My son has become pretty good friends with Bohm so it’s fun to see the kid come into his own after how the year started.

Hi Mex! Go Phils!

Also, the heavyweight champ in 1980-81 was Larry Holmes from Easton, PA, which is in Eastern PA if not necessarily the Philly area.
He frequents a Chinese restaurant near my house and my family ended up at a table next to him and his wife years ago. I explained to my kids who he was and then they wouldn't stop looking over at him. Pretty sure they noticed. :oldunsure:

On the way out they walked by us, and I said something like, "It was great having dinner with you champ" and he nodded and kept on going but his wife paused and said something nice.

Speaking of 1980's Philly teams, we used to run into Chocolate Thunder (Darryl Dawkins) every once in a while in Allentown too, and he was pretty friendly, RIP.

Flyers also off to a good start. But hockey fans know that John Tortorella will get that team to play well and play hard before inevitably alienating the locker room.

I think @AAABatteries was right when he laughed at my opening post back on 10/8. He was right and I was wrong. That wasn’t the best time ever to be a Philadelphia sports fan.

NOW is the best time. :banned:

The MLS Cup final was such a gut-punch for the Union, then to be knocked out of the baseball thing later the same day ...\

I don't follow soccer whatsoever, but after seeing highlights of that game, OH MY! I ended up watching the beginning, too, out of curiosity.

1. What a crushing defeat.

2. That was the craziest crowd I've ever seen at a U.S. sports event. Watch the first four minutes. They are all singing in unison and losing their ****. Game had just started, nothing happened. I was trying to think of any event I've ever watched in the States where a crowd went bonkers for that long, just to be there. Can't recall a one.

Damn, LA soccer fans are nuts. They've got a good product there and a great stadium that only magnifies the intensity. Impressive.

I’ll only add that this type of atmosphere is found in many MLS cities and matches, not just LA and not just in title games. Seattle, Portland, Austin, Kansas City immediately come to mind. Atlanta too but in a bit of a different style than the ones above. Philly brings it for big matches. There’s others as well.

MLS isn’t the best soccer on the planet, but it’s pretty damn good and getting better every year. Plus the chaos and parity it brings might make it one of the most entertaining brands of soccer there is.

The entertainmemt value of the league is really of the charts. Just the perfect mix of just enough quality with just enough mayhem.

San Jose is a really fun venue to watch a game as well.

The Cup final was ridiculous.

The Union score the latest goal in MLS history to surely win the Cup only to have Bale score even later. And then they lose the PK shootout to the LA back up keeper, who just happened to be born and raised in Philly and played for the Union.

The league really nailed the stadium sizes. A few teams can pull off the big stadium atmosphere but having the 18-27k sized stadiums packed gives such a good consistent atmosphere.

The league still has two big stadium problems with NYCFC and NE, both of which show no real signs of being fixed any time soon.

You lost both the World Series AND MLS Cup in the same night. Not even Cleveland is that pathetic.
