This was a great time to be a kid and a huge sports fan in Philly1980-81. All four major sports teams made the finals (though only the Phillies won the title).
I was 5 when this stretch happened and just started becoming aware of sports around this time. I just assumed that Philadelphia teams were always really good.1980-81. All four major sports teams made the finals (though only the Phillies won the title).
Unfortunately, I couldn't watch many games from the womb during that time. This was a great time to be a kid and a huge sports fan in Philly1980-81. All four major sports teams made the finals (though only the Phillies won the title).

Syracuse nats also went to the finals, for those who could see into the futureMost of you kids are too young to remember but 1949-50 had the Eagles taking their second consecutive NFL championship and the Phillies Whiz Kids winning their first pennant in 35 years.
Those of us who were 9 or 10 in 1980 are Gen Xers, thank you very much.Bump
You boomers and all your 1980 talk is on the way to be being overshadowed by 2022!!!
Woohooo!!!! Harper for President!!!!

Huge bump for 1980's candidacy. Also, the heavyweight champ in 1980-81 was Larry Holmes from Easton, PA, which is in Eastern PA if not necessarily the Philly area.
That’s the first year I really remember watching sports on TV. Have been a fan of Philly teams ever since. Had a #31 Eagles jersey in 82 or 83…..1980-81. All four major sports teams made the finals (though only the Phillies won the title).

I was at the 1980 and 1983 games also. I was 9 in 1980.1980 was a fun year. I was 16 and was at game 6 of the World Series when they won the championship. I also saw 2 other championships won in that era: 1976, I was at the Spectrum for game 4 when the Canadians swept the Flyers 4-0 in the NHL finals, and in 1983, I was at game 5 against the Orioles when the Phillies lost the World Series 4 games to 1.
Hi Mex! Go Phils!I’ve followed the phillies all year and would be cool to see them in the nlcs. My son has become pretty good friends with Bohm so it’s fun to see the kid come into his own after how the year started.
He frequents a Chinese restaurant near my house and my family ended up at a table next to him and his wife years ago. I explained to my kids who he was and then they wouldn't stop looking over at him. Pretty sure they noticed. Also, the heavyweight champ in 1980-81 was Larry Holmes from Easton, PA, which is in Eastern PA if not necessarily the Philly area.
ZOMG Jaysus HI2U2 but not Domer. Still bummed Mickey had a rough go of it out there but hopefully he turns it around with my Angels.Hi Mex! I think @AAABatteries was right when he laughed at my opening post back on 10/8. He was right and I was wrong. That wasn’t the best time ever to be a Philadelphia sports fan.
NOW is the best time.![]()
The MLS Cup final was such a gut-punch for the Union, then to be knocked out of the baseball thing later the same day ...\
There was absolutely no way this thread was going to end badly.
I’ll only add that this type of atmosphere is found in many MLS cities and matches, not just LA and not just in title games. Seattle, Portland, Austin, Kansas City immediately come to mind. Atlanta too but in a bit of a different style than the ones above. Philly brings it for big matches. There’s others as well. The MLS Cup final was such a gut-punch for the Union, then to be knocked out of the baseball thing later the same day ...\
I don't follow soccer whatsoever, but after seeing highlights of that game, OH MY! I ended up watching the beginning, too, out of curiosity.
1. What a crushing defeat.
2. That was the craziest crowd I've ever seen at a U.S. sports event. Watch the first four minutes. They are all singing in unison and losing their ****. Game had just started, nothing happened. I was trying to think of any event I've ever watched in the States where a crowd went bonkers for that long, just to be there. Can't recall a one.
Damn, LA soccer fans are nuts. They've got a good product there and a great stadium that only magnifies the intensity. Impressive.

MLS isn’t the best soccer on the planet, but it’s pretty damn good and getting better every year. Plus the chaos and parity it brings might make it one of the most entertaining brands of soccer there is.
San Jose is a really fun venue to watch a game as well.I’ll only add that this type of atmosphere is found in many MLS cities and matches, not just LA and not just in title games. You lost both the World Series AND MLS Cup in the same night. Not even Cleveland is that pathetic. The Phillies won their first playoff game last night in over a decade with a thrilling 9th inning comeback.
The Eagles are the ONLY undefeated team left in the NFL.
Best time ever to be a Philly sports fan?
