I will take the drinker and the guy who curses over the guy who goes over and taunts the other teams bench. Classless.
Link? I've watched every Charger game Rivers has ever played, and I've never seen this.
While I think the drinking and doosh comment was tongue in cheek the first time...and maybe you are being too literal with goes over and taunts the bench...but he was talking quite a bit of smack to Cutler was he not?

He wasn't really talking to Cutler, he was talking to his teammates on the field ("Atta baby!"), but yeah, he meant for Cutler to hear it. I'm not sure if that counts as trash talk, but it pales in comparison to Cutler's trash talk.Obviously biased sources, but entertaining nonetheless.

Former Chargers right tackle Shane Olivea on the Rivers-Cutler feud:

Tell me about the yakking on the field in the Denver game...

McRivers is a man. He's so up for games, more than me! You wouldn't believe how wild that guy is. He's a gamer, that Patriot game should prove that. That whole Denver thing is so blown out of proportion. Here's what happened, somebody print this. Jay [Cutler] is out there running his mouth, telling Luis [Castillo], telling Merry [shawne Merriman], telling everyone how they're gonna beat us in our own place, that he's gonna own us, and he's not doing #### out there. The D is shutting him down, and he's still talking ####, all through the game. What you see Philip doing out on the field is him talking to the defense, not to Jay. Now, Philip wanted Jay to hear it, but he was just telling the defense good job. Hell, Champ [bailey] is out there riding Philip, too. McRiverton doesn't give a ####, he doesn't care. Philip wasn't yelling at Cutler. Someone should have had a lens on him [Cutler]. He talked total #### the whole game, and they ended up with three points. And they only kicked the field goal because Jay didn't want to get shut out. The defense gave it right back to Jay, and he didn't like it at all. "Tough ####," we thought. Then all this video of Philip talking ####? He wasn't talking ####. Ask Jay.
Former Chargers linebacker Matt Wilhelm on the Rivers-Cutler feud:
Tell us what it’s like facing Jay Cutler twice a year. ...

What a total loser. I wasn’t surprised when the Broncos tried to trade his sorry ###. You should have heard the #### he was shoveling in that game at the Q in '07, the game where Philip [Rivers] was taking #### for yelling at Cutler. They saw Philip on TV, and said Philip started it. ####, you gotta be kidding me. It was that ##### Cutler that started all that ####, telling us "I'm coming. Here I come. We're coming for you." "Bring it on, #####," we'd tell him. He never does: 38 to 3 last year, 52 to 21 this year. Yeah, you’re coming. #####. All talk, and nothing to back it up. He's a loser, and I’m glad he's staying in Denver so we can visit him two more times.

Can you share what was going on down on the field with you and Cutler and Rivers in that game in 2007 at Qualcomm?

Like I said, Jay’d keep telling us that he’s gonna shred us, we’re slow, we can’t cover anyone, we’ve never seen an arm like his, **** like that, all game long. I mean, we’re up four TDs, and they kick a field goal so Cutler wouldn’t hear us telling him that we’re gonna shut him out. What a crock of ####. "That field goal didn’t mean anything, you #####," we’d tell him. Nice going. Three points. Big deal. Go ahead, you #####, throw the ball some more, you ****. It was great, we were just laying into him. Man, [shaun] Phillips was just killing Cutler. "Come on, Jay! Scramble! Roll on over this way, I’ll hit you so hard, you’ll forget all about you thinking you’re better than Elway! Yeah, I heard that, that you think you’re better than Elway. Come on over here, I’ll knock some sense into that big old head of yours! You couldn’t hold Elway’s jockstrap! You kidding me??? The only way you’re getting’ to a Super Bowl is to buy a ticket!"

Oh, man, we love tearing Jay Cutler a new one. Funny thing is, you can yell all kinds of things at Peyton, at Tom, at Favre, Ben, all those guys. They don’t care. Just rolls off their back. Not Jay the #####. I swear I thought he was gonna cry when Phillips was smacking him around. Watch him next time, when defenses start jawing at him. He hates it, and everyone knows it. Oh-nine should be fun for that crybaby. People are gonna find out what that guy’s all about, if they haven’t, already. ...

Does Rivers truly hate Cutler even though unlike Cutler he says all the right things in public? Is he surprised at all the attention Cutler is getting now regarding the trade?

(Laughs) You kidding? Rivers? (Laughs) He doesn’t hate ANYONE. You know what Philip hates? He hates the fact that Cutler’s no challenge for him. He’d love it if Cutler could bring it, but all he does is whine instead, cries to his WRs, cries to the coaches, cries to the refs. I told you, the only thing that surprised me is that the Broncos didn’t trade that ####.

Holy smokes. How do they REALLY feel about him?

Nice take by a teammate.

But the video evidence is hardly him talking to his defense. His boys are behind him waving bye to Cutler as Rivers is jawing.

You can see Rivers right away turning right at Cutler.

So don't play the "he was just talking to his defense" card. Its BS.

He was yelling "atta baby" to the defense and giving them high fives as they came off the field while he looked at Cutler. It's been written about a number of times. He's staring down Cutler while loudly congratulating the defense. So the stare down part... in just one incident, mind you... is apparently enough to brand him a jerk in many people's eyes, apparently including yours. This despite his strong character and leadership qualities that have also been well documented.Since you are so certain his words are not words to congratulate the defense, why don't you enlighten us as to what he's saying?

ETA: Even in the video you linked, when the camera zooms in on Rivers, you can clearly see that he says "atta baby" twice. Wow, what a complete jerk. :coffee:

He was yelling at his defense...while looking right at Cutler? Did you even read that before you wrote it to realize how foolish it sounds? It was trash talk...plain and simple. There is a reason he was looking/staring him down and how it was intended. No matter what was said...it was trash talk.

Oh, and I don't think it makes him a jerk. Just pointing out that it did, in fact, happen. And you can spin it however you want...but it was most certainly a way of trash talking/taunting the opposing team.

I'm not going to argue about it, when it's already been covered in the media and can be seen on the video. He must be the weakest trash talker in the NFL if saying "atta baby" is his trash talk. Just look at the quotes from Shane Olivea and Matt Wilhelm a few posts up...

Yes...Im shocked that his teammates backed him up.

anyway...I don't think it changes the question.

As a Packer fan I am very happy with Rodgers and in FF I would take him over Rivers as well...no matter which one talks trash or who doesn't or who yelps at his defense while staring down an opposing player. :bag:

And saying atta boy to our defense is something I would not be used to Rodgers doing last year. :D

I'm not talking about the fact they backed him up. I'm talking about their language... when giving a take to someone on this subject, so imagine it is that bad or worse on the field. Then look at Rivers on the video saying "atta baby" twice. That was my point. If that's trash talk, it doesn't get any weaker than that.As for the poll question, I chose Rivers but I think it's very close and would be happy to have either one, either for this year or in a dynasty league.

I agree Id be happy with either one.

They are two I am targeting while I know I won't value Brees, Brady, or Manning enough to take them and I will grab RBs and WRs while they are going off the board.

I don't really like Rivers (what can I say, I'm a Colts homer :goodposting: ), but he is an excellent QB. I voted Rodgers in the poll, but just by a hair. I like Rodgers for his upside. He has great weapons and put up great numbers for his first year starting.

Everyone is talking about Rivers not getting as many oppertunities this season because of an improved defense and a better running game. Do you realize that Rivers only attepted 18 more passes in 2008 vs 2007? That stat really stands out to me because so many people are making the argument against Rivers that he will not pass as much as last year. His stats went up last year because he took the next step as a QB, not because of more attempts. His yards/attempt, total yards, and touchdown passes all went up with about one extra pass per game. I don't think he throws 34 TD passes again with an improved running game, but I don't expect his production to decline other than that. Only reason I picked Rodgers is because I think he can improve upon what he has done in his first year starting. Rivers is very solid, though.

Chargers fans: You still standing strong behind that whole "Rivers doesn't talk trash" position after the taunting call tonight? Just wondering...

I'd love to know what he said. In context, at that point he had already lost his starting center on a play that had been blown dead, and then on that snap the Raider DT lunged at his legs after that play had already been blown dead.

I'm not making excuses for him, but I wonder if that's what led to his outburst.

Later in the third quarter, having already lost Hardwick on a similar play, Rivers saw Raiders tackle Gerard Warren continue charging toward him after a timeout had been called. As Warren crawled toward him, Rivers leaned down and yelled at him and then flicked the ball to the ground near Scott.

"We lost Nick on a play that was whistled dead," Rivers said. " . . . I'm about to get rolled up on. I lost my mouthpiece on the play, and as I was leaning down to get it, I yelled, 'Stop on the whistle.' Then I threw the ball. I wasn't throwing at him. I understand what it looked like, but I was by no means taunting him."

He was looking for his mouthpiece.

Can you all come up with any more excuses for what anyone outside of SD fans can see is clear taunting?

It's not taunting if he has a point, guy lunged at his legs after the whistle blew. Didn't look very graceful yelling at him though (and I'm not a SD fan and I don't even like Rivers all that much)

You don't bend over a guy on the ground yelling, then throw the ball at or near him.

and the excuse that he was just leaning over for his mouthpiece is worse than the one that he was just telling his own team attaboy while looking towards Cutler and screaming at him.

Was it stupid? Absolutely. Did he deserve 15 for unsportmanlike conduct? Probably. Was it "clear taunting"? No.

I don't think the mouth piece is an excuse. I think Warren playing after the whistle is the reason Rivers yelled at him.

Yep, playing after the whistle is how Hardwick was injured just a few plays earlier. Rivers sticking up for his center and doing what the officials should have done, nothing wrong with that, but haters keep hating. Rivers looked awesome in the 4th Q.

Apparently so.The guy is a very good QB...but needs to learn to control his own emotions and mouth.
