PHILADELPHIA (AP) A hitchhiking robot that captured the hearts of fans worldwide met its demise in the U.S.

The Canadian researchers who created hitchBOT as a social experiment told The Associated Press that someone in Philadelphia damaged the robot beyond repair early Saturday, ending its first American tour after about two weeks.

:lmao:

This was my immediate reaction. Poor bot.

Ya know, I just read about this and it's a mixture of wtf and wtf. This thing had done fine across Germany and the Netherlands. It gets here and never had a chance. They ripped its arms off and left it at the side of the road, leaking fluids. According to the report I saw, this was its last words:

"I've… seen things... you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Berlin; I watched high-beams glitter in the dark near the Anne Frank house... All those… moments… will be lost, in time, like [chokes up] tears… in… rain. Time… to die.

I know the usual jokes about Philly, but this is why we, as a nation, can't have nice things.

There's both an asshol-ism and a sense of bureaucratic normativeness that allows this to happen in the U.S. Yeah, it's gross and reprehensible and reductive.

Also, the communitarianism that Europe is going through is a product of something greater and more evil. Europe was/is fascistic and communistic. Better their people be humbled in the 21st century, thankfully. I wonder when ours is coming, if it didn't in the decades previous to this.

That thing is pretty freaky looking. I probably would have destroyed it too.

They couldn't have made a hot robot like Ava?

It's hitting all the major news sites

Nypost.Com has a photo of the dead robot with the headline City of brotherly love...

Denver post just says Not yet, skynet.

FoxNews reports Liberals furious that criminal robot surveilling nation's highway infrastructure and major cities was stopped before suspected carjacking attempt.

What part of Philly?

I haven't really followed this thing, but from the articles I've read, seems like this thing has mostly been through fairly middle class and up parts of the world. Is Philly the first time it's been in a lower class inner city type area?

Did I do that? :lmao: :lmao:

Don't know what this is but Philly has always been a terrible place. The creators should've done their research.

For some reason this story got to me today. A unique and benevolent project seeking to do nothing more than visit different areas, put smiles on faces and collect pictures and stories, and someone rips its arms off. I don't know, just seems sad and awful.

It is actually sad and awful. Just whistling our way past the graveyard as it were.

This. And I think the robot would have wanted it this way.

To be a martyr for the revolution.

RIP. I have been following since HitchBot left Marblehead. Philly sucks.
My wife is from Philly so I'm a bit biased, but they really are just crude and despicable people there. This thing was doomed from the moment it entered that godless stinkhole.

In college I did a promo tour one summer traveling around the country that placed me at a Toys R Us on Aramingo Ave in Philly.

Was there for about 6 hours on a Saturday afternoon set up in their parking lot. During that time: cops were called for a kid tagging the bathroom, a car drove into the parking lot dropped off a couple of big bags of garbage, there was a decent fight across the street, and a pack of kids on bikes tried to sell me and my coworker socks.

As we were leaving the manager comes out and tells us to make sure whatever we did do not drive the wrong way back to the freeway because it could end really bad for us. Thought he was messing with us but couldn't tell.
