Biggest football fan I know. I found his reason for anxiety humorous.

That's the spirit. He's wanted his legs amputated for several years as he gets older. Much easier transfers from his chair to the car or bed. He'd be much lighter and not worrying about banging his legs on something or bed sores or future circulation issues. I support this wish for him. But my sis thinks Jesus may return any time now and heal him so he needs his legs. She also won't get vaccinated, so ya know what we're dealing with here. I've explained a lack of legs is not an issue for Jesus, but she disagrees. :)

I mock her but she's been amazing caring for him all these years. A saint if ever there was a slightly deluded conspiracy believing saint.

Is that the episode with Glad Tidings or the Them song? Van as a person does seem to truly suck. That’s been true even when he was young. Luckily I am quite good at separating the art and artist but I also can’t blame anyone turned off by him. Though considering MJ was already drafted, I figure Van isn’t the weirdest or most problematic person drafted so far so I let myself off the hook. 

 
So odd how someone like Van can be so empathetic and compassionate in their art but seemingly be the total opposite in their personal life. Is it some kind of compensation for how sensitive he truly is? Or is it (like Van seems to believe) that he isn't really writing or creating any of his music but that he's just an antenna and he is only receiving the music. Also, while looking at it I found Astral Weeks is Harry Styles favorite album and Robert Pattinson cited Beside You as his favorite song. So it seems like Van may have found his way into another generation to live on.

This is how I am, too. In my case, I had to become at peace with my hypocrisy or I'd go insane trying to parse it all. 

That said, Van's always been an ####### and kind of messed up. Rock critics in the 1970s exalted his brooding misanthropy, but he was mainly just a jerk. Made some brilliant music, though.

Michael Jackson is, to me, a much sadder case. He was probably born wired a little differently, but I'm not sure he ever had a chance at anything resembling normal. His father was an awful human being who treated those boys like slaves. The older brothers seemed to understand what was happening and were able to weather it (for the most part). But Michael was a little kid, the shining star, and - most importantly to Dad - the breadwinner.

It is interesting how our opinions seemed to have changed in the last 10-20 years or so. Whether it was musical artists or directors or actors. We used to accept or maybe even encourage creative people to behave horribly and abuse those around them for the sake of the art. Dustin Hoffman is such a great actor that it is just acceptable that he treats his fellow actors and crew like garbage. That's just part of his creative process. Or it's fine that Kubrick mentally breaks down his actors and has no regard for their mental or physical safety because The Shining and 2001 were so great. Now, I think we have come around to the idea a person can be a successful artist and respectful to the people around them and we don't tolerate these brooding, difficult, angry artists like we used to. 

And yes Van's music is brilliant. Quite unique too. I don't even know who I would compare him in terms of musical style.

Station to Station - David Bowie (1976)

Obviously if I had an earlier pick, things may have gone differently, but Bowie has always been one of my favorite artists and happy to get two classics here. It was hard to leave Hunky Dory out as sometimes I rank it over Spiders, but the rules is the rules and Station to Station is glorious anyway.

 
Fleetwood Mac: 

Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac (1968)

Rumours (1977)

Essentially two different bands. The first album is a blues masterpiece. The second album is the quintessential 70s soft rock collection. I love them both.

This was what I would have picked if I didn't go Arcade Fire. I might have taken Low but it really depends on the day which of those 75-79 ones I like best.

I'm new to the whole music draft scene, so I did not know to include a write-up....

But, when I saw the draft criteria, MJ was one of the first to come to mind with two great albums that were just on either side of a half-decade. I was not a big MJ fan growing up, but at one point I did claim to be the only person in the world who owned Off The Wall, but not Thriller.

Thriller was the no-brainer here, and because I actually owned Off The Wall (Only MJ album I ever owned) in my youth, I went there instead of one of the later albums.

I have visions of trying to grab an album from every time period, but I was in High School in the early-mid 80's, but also a bit of an old taste in music growing up, so my wheel house will be Late 60's to Mid-80's - I'll be guessing at most albums past that time period.  So, maybe I will just stick with what I know!!

Yeah, the strategy will be interesting. There are a few artists that either by chance or by longevity have a few options and others who's best work is all crammed is mostly crammed into a short time period. I was happy with Van in the 1st since besides being a lifelong fan, his peak work was all between 69 and 74. So while there are quite a few really good albums there, the pairing for this draft wouldn't work

Station to Station is considered by many a bridge album but I get serious Berlin vibes from it. I’ve probably listened to S2S as a whole album more than any other

The Police, Synchronicity (1983)

Making sure I got "Message in a Bottle" and "Synchronicity II" broke the various ties going on in my head.
