What brought this about was a local rock station contest. 64 "greatest albums of all time" were put head to head tournament style and voted upon via text, phone and social media. The final was PF Dark Side vs PF The Wall.

So I was curious if RH fans saw PF as great or just a lesser band compared to RH.
I have no doubt that a mainstream commercial rock station in Philly arrived at that conclusion :)
I'm honestly surprised it wasn't Led Zeppelin or Springsteen based on he population here.

Only people who have no sense for music would answer Radiohead here. And I actually kinda dig Radiohead.

These polls are always subjective and a matter of taste.

But the way I see it is that in another 30 years (when the Stones launch their 80th anniversary tour), we'll still be talking about Pink Floyd (and particularly , Dark Side Of The Moon) as an all-time great. I could be way off, but I don't get that same sense with Radiohead.
I do. DSOTM is nice and all, but it's very well-appointed cumbersome bar chords. OK Computer and Kid A make DSOTM look like Mary Had a Little Lamb. Which is a great jam, don't get me wrong.
Never heard DSOTM merely referred to as "cumbersome bar chords". If complex song structure is what makes an album, then there is no need for many classic albums - like early Beatles.

Not even the two best Floyd albums.
As great as those 2 are, I probably listen to them the least. I'll take anything pre-Dark Side plus WYWH/Animals over them.

Radiohead by a RCH... I Love me some Floyd, but Radiohead's catalog shows a bit more range, creatively.

Tough call though and I'd likely go back and forth. Cant fault either. Much better comparison than Weezer.
The RCH is thicker, are you sure you don't mean a Blonde CH,.... much more wispy

Still waiting for that evidence of more range thru the catalog of Floyd's career...
Compare:

"Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered in a Cave and Jamming with a Pict" (Ummagumma)

to

"Free Four" (Obscured by Clouds)

to

"The Great Gig in the Sky" (Dark Side of the Moon)

to

"Welcome to the Machine" (Wish You Were Here)

to

"Pigs on a Wing" 1 or 2 (Animals)

to

"You Better Run" (The Wall)

I bet someone else could come up with six other Pink Floyd songs that bear little resemblance to any of these. We could probably keep playing that game for awhile.

Seriously? And you're a musician? That complaint about Floyd has been thrown around so much it was a cliche by 1985.

Arnold Layne>A Saucerful of Secrets>If>If (live)>Atom Heart Mother (w/brass section)>Seamus>Stay>Dogs>Comfortably Numb>Learning to Fly.

No range at all.

Wow, I thought this would be much closer. I wonder if you reversed the order that the Radiohead records were released it might be closer. PF got more mainstream each record while Radiohead kinda did the opposite. Interesting results regardless.

Average age of FBGs also plays a role here.

I'm not much of a musician at all, but consider myself having a good ear. True, Floyd's musicianship on DSOTM may be well surpassed on countless other albums (even other Floyd albums), but that's incredibly limiting to how great the album is.

Impossible to compare. Radiohead has access to technology that PF didn't and PF has the perspective of time in their work being assessed. PF had their hits played in a loop on the radio for decades before RH was even a band. It's like comparing Raiders of the Lost Ark to Ironman, something like that. Plus Radiohead is still releasing records while PF hasn't been PF for over 30 years.

Totally agree. Consider me a musical philistine cuz even though I've listened to the entire Floyd catologue I still consider DSOTM to be a masterpiece and one of the best albums by any artist.

With age comes wisdom.
Sometimes, it's more about nostalgia here though.

A Tool vs. Rush thread would be more entertaining.

Dream Theater vs. Tool even better, just to see who votes for Dream Theater.

Animals and Wish You Were Here are about as good as music gets.

Can't believe it has been 9 years since 10,000 days! As much as I love other bands, nobody puts on a show like Tool.

Great albums. I've always like Ummagumma, even though the band hate it. I'm also a huge fan of Meddle, but I might be the only person I know who is.

meddle is great. love fearless. Echoes (live at Pompeii) is my favorite Pink Floyd song

or Primus
Primus is a great choice. To go against Radiohead.
not really,. Radiohead is way past Primus in fame and album sales, and critical success. Not a good comparison. the thread OP is a good try but since most of us on this board grew up with Pink Floyd, its bound to be heavily in favor of them. Also, body of work, Pink Floyd is a legendary group, probably top 5 all time. don't think Radiohead will achieve that.

In all seriousness, I am obviously a Radiohead fan, but IMO no band has ever put out a string of albums that Floyd put together from Meddle through The Wall. 5 fantastic albums in a row and most considered all-timers. That doesn't even take into account their first 2 albums. I would say Radiohead has 4 fantastic albums, so Floyd almost doubles them up on that front, and maybe only OK Computer is an album that feels like it has the scope of one of the best Floyd albums. Pink Floyd easily in this one.
Obscured by Clouds came after Meddle and before Dark Side.

Anyway, I love Radiohead to pieces, but Floyd wins this one.

We're not talking record sales, just nerdiness amongst the fanbases.

A lot of people that strongly underestimate Radiohead. They are in the same conversation as Pink Floyd.
