Pittsburgh RB Situation (1 Viewer)

1. Parker has a sprained knee and looks to be out next week vs JAX and then they have a bye. Is it safe to assume he will be back the week after the bye?

2. Mendenhall fills in for FWP last night, breaks his shoulder and is now on the IR. Who is the main back up now?

3. C. Davis looked decent last night vs Baltimore prior to his injury. How bad is his injury?

4. Mewelde Moore ended up taking over all the carries because Casey went out. He looked okay, but seems to be a better COP back.

5. Russell is on the practice squad. Any chance he just leap-frogs to the top here?

Russell was cut from the practice squad, just an FYI

Pittsburgh has shown the past couple of weeks that they have a lot of questions along the OL, sustained another injury there last night...does it matter who is starting for the Steelers right now? They likely are going to have to thrwo the ball 40 times to win until they get FWP back...they were fortunatet o pull out a win last night.

Really?Never saw any news about that, but happy to hear it.

We'll know a lot more after Tomlin's news conference later today but here is my attempt at answering your questions:

1. I think Parker will be back after the bye.

2. The main backup at this point is Mewelde Moore. This could change depending on who the Steelers sign, how serious the injury is to Carey Davis and how well Gary Russell performs.

3. Too early to know. Last night is was being reported as an ankle sprain. He might play this week or could be out several weeks. I am guessing he'll be out since the Steelers have a short week.

4. Moore is the team's 3rd down back. He'll probably be named the starter this week but remain in the lineup on 3rd down. Russell will spell him from time-to-time.

5. It is possible but unlikely in my opinion. With only one other healthy back I would think he'll get a lot of touches this week though...

That is precisely what makes Moore a nice pickup if Tomlin chooses to start him on Sunday. The guy is a beast catching the ball out of the backfield.

Right now, my guess is Davis (assuming he's healthy) and Russell split carries and Moore stays as the 3rd down back. They're also combing the free agent list...I wouldn't be surrised to see Najeh come back, since it's a short week and at least he knows the plays.

I don't think anyone gets enough carries to justify picking them up for the week, and expectations are that FWP is back after the bye.

The Steelers would also be well-served to steal Billy Latsko from the Panthers PS if Davis really is the backup RB now that Mendenhall is out for the year.

If Benson's agent hasn't already called the Steelers' front office and begged them for a workout, Cedric should 1) fire his agent, or 2) just resign himself to working at the Taco Shack from here on out.

I did read on one of the Pittsburgh sites that the Steelers will be looking outside the organization for a running back. Whether that amounts to anything is another story.

I heard that Pittsburgh was going to sit FWP until after the bye. I was wondering if that was just being extra cautious with him since they hadMendenhalll or if they thought he needed the extra week? I gues my real question is whether FWP might end up playing this week due to the otherinjuries?

My waiver claim for Mewelde Moore is in, as of right now he's the only safe play (ppr leagues) in that backfield. That could change between now and tomorrow but right now that's the only play imho.

As for outside the organization, Marcus Mason? swipe him off the Rat Birds' practice squad perhaps?

Unless you are completely strapped at RB due to injury/bye, this is at best a one week flyer. Should you choose to get involved in this short-term fix (Should Parker remain out this week) I would target Mewelde.

Hmmm, I would rather have Russell at this point. Mewelde Morre will NOT get the bulk of the work because the Steelers cannot afford to lose him. He is the only 3rd down back they have and he's also been returning kick-offs. I would be surprised if Tomlin doesn't play it close to the vest this week and instead let Russell be the 1st and 2nd down back. :lmao:

Tomlin said this last night after the game. However I think it is very unlikely they would sign someone from the outside and get him integrated enough into the offense on a short week to have more than just a handful of carries, if that. This week is going to be the Russell/Moore show unless Parker or Davis are able to come back from their injuries.

I have to agree here

Steelers bring back Davenport

Steelers bringing back Davenport

Tuesday, September 30, 2008

By Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Steelers have brought back running back Najeh Davenport with the intention of signing him to their 53-man roster to replace injured rookie Rashard Mendenhall, who is out for the remainder of the season with a fractured shoulder.

Davenport was brought in for a workout today and, if all goes well, he will probably be signed and get ready to play in Sunday's game in Jacksonville.

Davenport, 29, played two seasons with the Steelers until he was released in June. He started the final game of the regular season and the playoff loss to the Jaguars last season when Willie Parker fractured his fibula in Week 15.

Mendenhall was injured on the first play of the second half when he was hit by Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis after a 3-yard gain. The Steelers finished the game with just one healthy running back -- Mewelde Moore -- after Carey Davis left the game with a sprained ankle.
Makes sense...he already knows the system.

so with najeh back.. does anyone see much value for moore?

i didn't think he was startable against jax this week anyway, but if najeh is in the mix i'm not even sure if moore is worth a roster spot.

If the Steelers hadn't drafted a RB, I believe Davenport would still be on the team...as a backup of course.MeMoore is the 3rd down back that returns some kicks. Moore has value this week as Davenport probably has some rust to dust off.
