Seems like a questionable move by the Ravens...cut him to avoid paying $850K? He was still over 81% on FG for the season, including 22-23 from inside the 40.

The story kinda botches it. I think he was an UFA. He obviously could not receive a contract offer from the Jets if he was truly under contract. That would be tampering. Either way Mr. Reliable doesn't seem to be in the Ravens plans. The game winner in the playoffs against the Titans will be a treasured memory from this past season. Good luck Mr. Stover!

Matt Stover, the Ravens' kicker for their entire existence, said tonight that he is no longer wanted by the team.

Stover, a free agent, said he approached the Ravens with an offer he had received from the New York Jets on Monday. The Ravens informed him they were moving on, according to the kicker, 41, the only player remaining from the team's relocation from Cleveland.

"At that point, we knew for sure their direction was not to keep me," Stover told The Baltimore Sun tonight. "They want to go in another direction."

The Jets eventually signed Jay Feely, leaving Stover without a team.
