Awful. :(

BEDFORD, Mass. — Authorities say all seven people aboard a private plane were killed when it crashed in a Massachusetts air field and erupted into fire.

They say the Gulfstream IV aircraft was leaving Hanscom Field in Bedford when it crashed and caught fire about 9:40 p.m. Saturday. The plane was headed to Atlantic City International Airport in New Jersey.

The names of the victims were not immediately released. And authorities have not said what they think caused the crash. They said the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate.

Nearby residents recounted seeing a fireball and feeling the blast of the explosion shake their homes.

The air field is used by the public and operated by the Massachusetts Port Authority.

One of the victims was Lewis Katz, co-owner of the the Philly newspapers.

Katz made his fortune investing in the Kinney Parking empire and the Yankees Entertainment and Sports Network in New York. He once owned the NBA's New Jersey Nets and the NHL's New Jersey Devils and is a major donor to Temple University, his alma mater.

"Lewis Katz was an exceptional man, whose presence enriched the lives of everyone he came in contact with," said Marimow, the Inquirer's editor. "He never forgot his friends or his roots, giving back generously to the city of Camden, Temple University, Dickinson College's law school, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and countless other organizations.

"He loved his family and his friends and they loved him back in return. We've lost a great friend."

Katz grew up in the Parkside section of Camden. His father died of a heart attack soon after Katz was born, and his mother raised him on her earnings as a secretary at RCA.

Sad :(

He had been in the news lately as he just took full control of the Philly Inquirer from the rest of the ownership group (as mentioned in the article).

RIP

Hmmm... this will cue the conspiracy guys, especially in this type of death. I haven't followed it extremely closely but I know there was quite a bit of controversy with the transaction.
