Plane down at San Fran airport (1 Viewer)

Slides have been deployed for passengers to get off, smoke is visible for a mile , firefighters working to control fuel fire, per live coverage on cnn.

People are reporting tail broke off and plane flipped over and caught fire. It's a Boeing 777 out of Taipei. A call went out for the SF FD mass casualty unit. There are a bunch of pics showing a large smoke plume.

That's the latest.

Closeups of the plane show the top of most of it to be gone, burned out. Gotta think there is going to be a number of fatalities

290 on board, one infant.

I am flying to SFO Thurs, my 11 month old's first time on a plane. Feeling a bit uneasy

When's the last time there were two crashes at the same airport in the same week? It's even safer now for you!!

(not to make light of what happened today)

Did anyone else notice the debris field? It looks like it starts at the beginning of the runway

Edit: Guy on CNN just made this same statement. (guess, I wasn't the only one to see that)

Hope everyone is ok. As I was watching I was thinking this doesn't make me anymore uneasy to fly at all. Not sure why but i know the threat of accidents are everywhere I life. This does not increase or decrease that. SFO is one of the main airports I use. Although this seems to have nothing to do with the actual airport.

Victims so far are "burns and inhalation". Whatever that means. Anyone in the back 10-20 rows has to have gotten the worst of it.

Yeah it's easy to see that when the camera shows it. Looks like pilot air on the landing. IMO

Got pilots speculating now that landing gear caught the retaining wall, then tail strike and slide.

Edit: Due to wake turbulence.

If you have ever flown into SFO you will know how strange it is to fly over water getting lower and lower then it seems like the land appears just in time.

man, these press conferences never, ever start on time.
Not like they're going to say anything anyway

Looking at those pics, it's amazing anyone got off alive

Google COO Sheryl Sandberg was supposed to be on the flight

Cue :tinfoilhat:

Aybody know where the Winklevoss twins were?

All the local news channels were airing this event all day and all but 1 ended at 8 pm. Kron 4 is still going until 11 pm. Since the pilot was flying VFR and they are saying the pilot would have been in control (not computers) at that time, I'm guessing pilot error. Seems he noticed last minute that he's too low and tried to get lift but it was too late and the tail hit. Will be interesting to see what really happened.

Last airspeed was 105 777 stalls at 135. He was in too slow. Not sure why we haven't found a suitable bus to throw the guy under yet.

just flew back from sfo ... it is an odd landing

Landing in SFO is a bit scary, because all you see is water getting closer and closer, then you see the landing strip.
My link above gives a good idea of this.

I would think SFO would easier as far as approach. Your not diving down between buildings or mountains
Wow, I just checked out that link. Touchdown seems immediate just as you clear the water. Even though I flew in an out of SFO often, I still would close my eyes during the approach. It's like you see water, then the landing strip, then boom, wheels are on the ground all in about less than 30 seconds. It's crazy how rare crashes are there at SFO.

Navy pilots do it all the time. And their runway is moving.

Yeah but I'm not on that plane.

No way SFO is that hard compared to others.

I fly in and out of SFO many. many times/year. It's an easy landing, especially on a day like today. Maybe dramatic-looking but far from complicated or dare-devilish. The plane usually lands hundreds of yards down the runway after the retaining wall on the Bay's edge. Any fear is psychological.

Yeah I know it's safe, and any fear of things that happen within transport would stem from the psychological. A buddy of mine would grip hard every time we rode the through the Transbay Tube on BART, because it was underwater. The idea of traveling underwater with the high sonic pitch along with the same space as a commercial jet cabin going through the tube at a high speed can freak out a lot of people. You may never die traveling through it, but it's still a but disconcerting.

The low lighting provides the perfect cover
