plantar fasciitis..... (1 Viewer)

I had a brief bout of plantar fasciitis which is a foot injury and in lamen terms it is a pain in your heal that feels like a bruise and it hurts like hell when you put pressure on it. Now I had never ever had any foot problems throughout my playing career (university soccer player) all on grass fields. At the end of my university plaing days my senior year and into my most recent competitive soccer playing days I am playing on the fake grass fields that are used everywhere now for both soccer and football.

Last summer my mild case started with an iritating pain and progressively got worst until I got some treatement and went on a dose of anti inflammatory drugs for plantar fasciitis. I had to take a couple of months off and have been fortunate to not have any return of it thus far.

I think the increase in this injury in the NFL may have something to do with the fields. I have not done any research on it but I am just throwing out my take.

I'm not doubting you, as I wouldn't have any idea, but wouldn't it then crop up more often in dome teams?

I think I've heard about 2 guys this year who've suffered it --- has it been that much more common than in the past?

They were saying it tonight during the game that there has been more cases this year than ever before. My guess is it would crop up more in players that are using this surface more than others.

Or players who aren't used to running on turf.

I'm familiar with PF from personal experience and seen it in many others. In addition to the playing surface as a potential cause, another is likely the footwear. Or the interaction between the two.

Or it could be related to the fact that you are getting older and your feet have more miles on them.

The new turf is so much softer than the old stuff (and even a grass field) that I wouldn't think this would be the main cause. Most of the people I know who have had it are not in their twenties. Age, weight, and lack of stretching probably contribute more to it than the type of playing surface. If you are anything like the rest of us, you might have put on 15 (or so, <_< ) pounds since college. You also probably don't stretch out as much prior to playing soccer as you did in your college days. If you combine that with your aging tendons, muscles, and ligaments, you are going to get more injuries.
