Plaxico's prediction

Posted by Joe Sullivan, Globe Staff January 29, 2008 06:01 PM

Plaxico Burress predicted a 23-17 Giants win and in Anthony Smith-fashion, he guaranteed it, too. "You have to believe in your team," said Burress.

As he defended his bold choice of words, Burress only had to look some 40 feet to his left to see the grim expression of coach Tom Coughlin, who wasn't happy to hear about the prediction.

"I was not aware of that," said Coughlin, who shook his head. "We've had a good theme all year and it hasn't been that. We do our talking on the field."

When a reporter heard David Diehl say there would "be a different outcome" to this Patriots-Giants game than there was Dec. 29 [New England won, 38-35], the offensive lineman wouldn't follow Burress' lead.

"I'm not guaranteeing anything," said Diehl. "I'm only saying I believe in my team."

It's getting to the point where it's more interesting when nobody "guarantees" anything.

If I were a player, all I'd guarantee is I'd show up on Sunday.

I would guarentee it as well..if you lose..nobody cares..if you win you are the next Joe Namath!!

Ever since CJ guaranteed the win over the undefeated Chiefs in 2003, people have been guaranteeing things before seemingly every big game. It's getting old now.

Number of games Patriots opponents have guaranteed they'd win this year that they actually won: 0

Regardless of Plax's prediction (which annoys me), I'm more worried about the SI curse. Putting Eli and the Giants smack on the cover of the issue has me concerned more than anything else.

These clowns never ever learn.

The only clowns are people who believe that these guarantees affect the outcome of the game. As if the Patriots were not preparing to play their best, but now that Plaxico guaranteed the win, they will now try. I'm sure if someone went back and took a look at all the predictions that have been made over the years, the number of upsets and blowouts as a result would be about what would be expected. For every blowout following a bold prediction, there is probably an upset to balance it out.

I don't think that's nearly as provocative as the Giants team dressing in black for their plane ride to Phoenix as a "funeral for the Pats perfect season".

http://www.bostonherald.com/blogs/sports/p.../funeral-plans/

If that's true, that's INCREDIBLY stupid.
So a blogger called it that, or the Giants players themselves said that? I heard it was an act of solidarity like college teams do.
Read the article,The Giants view this as a business trip,so Pierce came up with the idea, for solidarity,to all dress in dark suits, then some hack in Boston "ASSumes" they did it to dress like they were going to a funeral. Non-issue. As for Plax prediction I agree wuth a previous poster, you want him to say they're going to lose? I want confident players on my team and if they are confident enough to express their confidence more power to them.

I can't believe anyone has a problem with this.

Burress is right.

It is statisitically impossible for the Patriots to win this game.

Giants will win in a cake walk.

I missed the guarantee part. When an author praraphrases "he even guaranteed it by saying 'got to believe in your team'" that is not a guarantee. It's just sloppy reporting.

He didn't guarantee anything. They asked him his prediction and he gave a final score and said he believes in his team. It's a lot different then Joe Namath.

And the owner is always going to say he thinks his team can win. Do you want your team owner to say, "No, I like my guys but they can't win. I can't beleive I have to pay the bill to fly them there."

And the suits were a "business trip" idea.

The Boston media needs to calm down and stop looking for reasons to hype their team. Frankly, they don't need any more reasons then Tom Brady and 18-0.

God, the media is so lame for turning this non-story into more than it is. Is Burress supposed to say that he thinks his team will lose? All he did was say he thinks his team is going to win. He didn't guarantee a win or anything. The title of this thread is extremely misleading, too. Jeez, people.

Plax hasn't seen the 19-0 book yet, and I suppose didn't make any plans for the already planned Pats celebration parade :)

How about:

"I GUARANTEE that I'm gonna bring my 'A' game and do everything in my power to keep my teammates fired up and inspired"

This guaranteeing a win thing is getting silly and more and more people are looking like jackasses.

The Patriots have it right.Keep your mouth shut and let your play on the field do the talking.

I'd say Seau's statement about wanting to have this team labeled with an "Ever" (or something of the sort) is pretty much along the same lines as this...

Along the same lines as predicting a 23-17 victory ?I don't see the similarity.

I knew he would put his foot in his mouth at some point. He was talking about how the Giants have better WR's earlier so I figured he would make some sort of prediction. He'll probably just pull a TO after the game and say "I still think we are a better team than the Pats, we just didn't execute and make the plays we needed to in order to win" speech instead of giving the Pats their due.

Maybe Plax is simply diverting the media to him rather than the team. Maybe he knows he can handle it and doesn't want the other guys overwhelmed.

Just a thought.

I still don't see a guarantee. I heard these comments. He picked a score... I dont ever recall Plax saying he "guarantees" anything. Someone asked him what the score would be and he answered 23-17. 23 being a lucky number of his and 17 being his jersey number.

Do people want/expect players and teams to not say they will win? The Giants SHOULD think they will win (even though they wont)

Are you talking about the postgame AFCC interview on the field? Where he somewhat butchered an answer, but essentially was saying that "Now we have a chance to go down in history as ... ever (?!?)" I'm not sure what he was trying to say, but I recall the reference was that NE, upon making the Super Bowl, has a chance to play for the 19-0 record and the immortality that goes with it. Never did he say/predict/guarantee they would achieve it, just that they now had the chance to play for it.

I missed the guarantee part. When an author praraphrases "he even guaranteed it by saying 'got to believe in your team'" that is not a guarantee. It's just sloppy reporting and poor reading comprehension.

:goodposting: Who's 'poor reading comprehension' are you referring to?
Sorry....didn't realize it was confusing. Basically, anybody who is mistaking the media's coverage of Burress's comments to be some sort of a guarantee. IMO, a reporter can put the word guarantee in there 100 times, but if all Plax provided was a prediction, then we're just being sold hype. Too many times people confuse editorial comments with factual information.

Plaxico, WOW this cat won't stop talking.

Plax said NE better double team Him all day.

Then He went on to say, Belichick better call His Pal Parcells to game plan on how to stop Him.

He said that He plans on making at least three trips to the House this Sunday.

Keep talkng.

:X

Seriously, this is such a relatively quiet two weeks, people are making news out of nothing.

You all should stop looking for guarantees that aren't and silly comments by WRs and be GRATEFUL that we don't have to hear two freaking weeks of constant Favre vs. Brady discussion.

At least he's succeeded in getting Whiny Tool Nation all hot and bothered.

Well Plax just got 150 yards against one of the best cover corners in the league. It's possible it could happen.

Well they were black suits, so I am sure there is more to it then that..."There’s a reason each member of the Giants arrived in Phoenix wearing a black suit yesterday."

Newsday link

CHANDLER, Ariz. - Antonio Pierce was not familiar with Johnny Cash's famous line. Maybe it's better that way.

Cash, told by a record executive that his all-black attire made it look like he was going to a funeral, replied, "Maybe I am."

:

Fullback Madison Hedgecock, who is from North Carolina, was loitering outside the media room in his black shirt and black pants. He smiled at the Cash reference. "Team unity," he said.
Just more fodder for the Patriots locker room...
