Giants suspend WR Burress for ignoring calls

The New York Giants will not have the services of their most electrifying offensive weapon when they play Seattle after their bye week. WR Plaxico Burress will miss the game, not because of injury, but rather insubordination.

FOXSports.com has learned that the Giants have suspended Burress for two weeks for failing to show up for work on Monday and not responding to several phone calls by the team to explain his unexcused absence both Monday and Tuesday.

The star wideout, who was just rewarded with a new lucrative contract three weeks ago, was slated to meet with team officials early this morning to explain why he would've violated team rules and failed to return several phone calls explaining his whereabouts.

The excuse apparently was not good enough and head coach Tom Coughlin told the team this morning of the predicament and subsequent punishment.

The suspension means Burress will miss two weeks worth of pay as well as next week's game vs. the Seahawks.

In 2008, Burress has 18 catches for 259 yards and a touchdown. Last season he garnered massive respect for grabbing 70 balls for 1,025 yards and 12 TDs despite playing on a severely injured ankle. He's amassed four seasons of at least 1,000 yards receiving, two with the Giants and two with the Steelers. He opened this season with 10 catches for 133 yards on the Thursday night battle vs. the Redskins and at the time seemed worth every penny of his new deal.

Just three weeks later, however, the Giants are left punishing the wideout instead of praising him.

GIANTS SUSPEND PLAXICO

Posted by Mike Florio on September 24, 2008, 9:01 a.m.

The New York Giants, who have followed their Super Bowl championship with a strong start to the 2008 regular season, have suspended receiver Plaxico Burress, according to Jay Glazer of FOX.

Wow.

Per Glazer, Burress failed to show up for work on Monday, and he failed to respond by calls from the team aimed at obtaining an explanation for his unexcused absense.

It’s a two-week suspension, but since the Giants are off on Sunday he’ll only miss one game, against the Seahawks.

Burress was a key component of last year’s Super Bowl run, and he played most of the season with a torn ligament in his ankle before catching the game-winning touchdown pass in Super Bowl XLII. He received a new contract in the hours before the regular-season opener against the Redskins.

He is scheduled to meet with team officials on Wednesday morning to explain himself.

Stay tuned.

You knew Plax was going to be a headache at times but he just won the SB and signed a big contract. Jeez, thought he would shown the team some respect for at least this year.

If we had a bye week at my job, I can't definitively say I wouldn't miss Monday and Tuesday that week.

The Giants acting tough by taking two weeks of his salary, but go easy on themselves by losing their best player for just the one game and against a weak team at that.

with his 1 catch for 8 yard performance it was almost like he was suspended until OT this week as well....

Entitlement:

I am an uber-talented wide receiver with a superbowl ring and a fat contract. I've never liked practice, but this year I don't have a gimpy ankle to blame my lack of worth ethic on. Some people are concerned with foolish concepts like respecting your teammates and coaching staff, but I ain't got time for the pain. We talkin bout PRACTICE. Not a game; not a game. PRACTICE.

You seem to have him confused with a respectable mature adult.

Now you know why teams do not like to re-do contracts. They rarely work out.

With Plax it was only a matter of time, he never liked to follow rules even at MSU.

Plexiglass is an idiot and I'm sure the suspension was 100% deserved.

That said, it's a little odd that Coughlin didn't give the players the week off on their bye. They're the defending Super Bowl champions and they have a 3-0 record. So much for the new and improved Coughlin...

Curious what the explanation or reasonning was

I thought Burress turned the corner last year and decided to grow up and act his age. I guess that was just temporary.... or the team's PR staff just did a good job of hiding his continued immaturity.

Keep your eye on Hixon as a beneficiary of this.

He had an off game against the Bengals as well. Wideouts are the NFL's version of artists and musicians. Like most great ones, Plax is a bit of a headcase. With his new deal, the club is heavily invested in Plax and they want to see him take a leadership role and join Amani in setting a good example for all of the young receivers. This a timely message, well sent. Reese and Coughlin know their team, and I suspect Plax will come back fired up.

On the plus side, we might see a bit of Manningham against Seattle as a result.

It's not uncommon to review tapes the day after a game.Plax missed almost every practice in 2007 and alot of time this spring and summer. He pushed the envelope

Plaxico is a mercurial type, but he is a surprisingly dedicated player. If you read Ernie Accorsi's book 'The GM' - you know that Accorsi dedicated a chapter alone to Burress.

A couple of nuggets about Burress from the book.

1) He does not like to be touched. One coach (could have been Coughlin) put his hand on Burress, not in a forceful manner but more like just placing it one his arm/shoulder. Burress whipped backed, throwing the arm off him with the warning "Get you F-N hands off me"

2) He carries himself with a distinct separation and distance and he gives off the impression alot that he doesn't care, but one time Accorsi saw Burress's playbook and he was awestruck because in all of the margins were these meticulously written notes on each play in the margins. Really was taken about by how detailed and intricate he was in his preparation.

Anyway...I still believe him to be an edgy sort, so this doesn't exactly surprise me. But in some ways it does too...

True. And it's quite possible the Giants players had the rest week off. Not answering the phone calls is the worst part.

I don't remember what they did last year. I do remember, a previous year, some Giants were annoyed he expected them to come in and workout, work with the trainer some on their week off. IIRC The debate was whether it's good he wants them to stay in tip top shape with minimal exercise or if rest is best. Giants Coughlin has been wayyyy easier on the players than Jaguars Coughlin and they always barked, especially Tiki when he was there. Often seemed like an overreaction to me.

My impression from Sunday's game vs. the Bengals was that Burress wasn't completely into the game; like something else was going on. Several drops and did not make a big deal out of a possible TD catch that was ruled out of bounds. Announcers saw one replay and said it was reviewable, but the Giants quickly kicked a FG.

Curious to find out what his excuse was.

As a Burress owner, this sucks! What do you think this does to his reputation with the team? Is he going to see less passes? Less playing time?

NFL teams usually meet on Monday and Tuesday of the bye week then are released until the following Monday. 4-5 days off are more than enough for NFL teams to miss workouts. Also if they had 7 days off just think at how many more arrests there would be.

Interesting. Nice post TDW.

As a Steelers fan, I learned the hard way how "mercurial" Plaxico is but I just thought with the change of teams and his natural maturation, stuff like this would go away. I am also convinced that if the guy ever gets his head on straight, he could very well be the best receiver in the game. That day may never come until his skills have deteriorated.

I have a good friend who is a Giants fan and he can't stand Plaxico because of stuff like this. He believes in him as a player but doesn't think he's worth the headache.

31 other coaches in the league give their players off on Monday of the Bye Week

I don't think Burress shoulda skipped practice, but I'm glad Coughin has to go through this

for crying out loud give em a couple days off like every other team in the NFL does

and whatever happened to punishing the INDIVIDUAL not the team

fine his tail a LARGE sum and move on

hmmm... this conflicts with my post abovei was going by what ESPN radio was saying this morning that most every team gets Monday and Tuesday of the bye week off

Coughlin is a winner. The guy molded a bunch of misfits and malcontents into a SuperBowl Champion..even after losing their best player in Tiki Barber.I would love to have Coughlin coaching the Lions.

The Giants' timing of this suspension punishes the team the smallest amount that it could (Two Weeks, One Game) while still hammering home the point that Coughlin is in charge of the Giants - and you'll abide by his rules or you will sit your #### down. And if you want to punish a player more when he does something stupid - have the punishment affect the team. There's a reason Sergeant Hartman punished the whole platoon when Private Pyle stole that donut.

And I don't think teams can fine a player a "LARGE sum" according to the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Which is why teams suspend a player without pay when they do something stupid (see Steve Smith in Carolina).

I could be wrong about the COB.

He's probably pissed that his coach didn't have his touchdown catch reviewed. Looked like his feet were in on that one.

Plax was the only receiving weapon the Giants had most of last year; he is absolutely worth it and played through a very bad ankle that had him rounding his cuts for most of the year. He is a weapon and this is minor as far as I am concerned.Hixon and Steve Smith will see more time and probably Hixon because he plays on the outside more when the Giants are in the standard offense. I would expect to see the Giants go to the spread a little more which also could bring in more Bradshaw for the week without Plax.

From a fantasy perspective, does anyone see this being a lingering issue? Steve Smith came out and publicly stated he was taking his medicine, so it seemed like all would be well when he returned. But I wonder, with a ring and a fat contract, if Burress is more likely to become an attitude problem after this punishment.
