2006 Player Spotlight Series

Over the course of the offseason, we will be evaluating a multitude of players at every fantasy position. One such way we go about that is through the Player Spotlight series. Think of the Spotlights as a permanent record on some of the more intriguing players for the upcoming season. Each Spotlight will be featured in an article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Antwaan Randle El & Brandon Lloyd, WRs, Washington Redskins

Player Page Link: Antwaan Randle El Player Page

Player Page Link: Brandon Lloyd Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide sustainable value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsBest of Luck and ENJOY!

Wow...crickets for one of the more interesting WR battles of the preseason. Both are getting paid starters money. Lloyd would seem the better fit as a starter, but Randle El is the one who's told anyone listening that he's going to start.

Not only do they have to deal with one another, but Santana Moss and Chris Cooley are sure to be targeted.

New systems, new offensive coordinator, new QB.

Lots and lots to talk about with these two...let's hear it.

Jason, Dr. Drinen's article one who throws it where pointed out that the wr2 for Wash last year was pretty much worthless. I see the upside very limited in comparison to the ADP so I will have neither on my teams this year.

I see Moss and Cooley as options 1 and 2 in this offense. I also feel Portis will catch a good number of passes with Saunders as OC. Because of this, I think that the upside of both Lloyd and Randle El are relatively limited. I do feel the WAS offense is one to watch this year and next, as it could turn into something special... but it may take a little time.

Lloyd-

Recs: 43

Yds: 600

TDs: 4

Randle El-

Recs: 32

Yds: 450

TDs: 2

BTW- It seems the few projections for ARE right now are very similar (for whatever its worth).

This is my first post as a member here, so be gentle. :P It's really more of a scouting report, but it's something to help me get my feet wet.

Player Breakdowns

Brandon Lloyd

Physical Attribs.

He has the raw athletic ability to excell at the NFL level, but lacks thickness and a physical edge that limits his potential. He doesn't have ideal height, can accelerate off of the line of scrimmage, but lacks true breakaway speed and can be caught in the open field. He tends to go down with the first hit, and shys away from routes and situations where he's exposed over the middle. He's a decent jumper and a fantastic leaper, and can produce highlight-reel catches on balls that would be overthrown to other wideouts.

Football Attribs.

He hasn't displayed much football smarts, but the offenses in which he's been featured in his three years in the league have been dreadful. He has little to no value as a blocker, and isn't much of a 'home-run' threat on short routes. With some development mentally he may learn to better harness some of his physical advantages, but as of today, he has yet to turn the corner.

Fantasy Value

Little to none. In his prior seasons he was the featured wideout on an offense that probably could have been contained by some of the best college defenses. Still, in his best year he gained 733 yards in 16 games and scored 5 times. Washington's offense will clearly be better than San Fran's was, but Lloyd will have to compete for an every-down role, and will most likely be featured on 3rd down or long situations.

Antwaan Randle-El

Physical Attribs.

Big speed in a small package. At 5 foot 10 inches, he's not going to win any vertical battles, but he has quick feet and can move very well in the open field. He doesn't feature much of a burst off of the line of scrimmage, but he can seperate from defenders in the open field. He's good at finding gaps and breakdowns in defensive schemes, and has sure hands in the flats and over the middle.

Football Attribs.

Is a scrappy player that is physical at the line and makes an attempt to block in run situations. He played Quarterback in college, and is one of the only wideouts in NFL history to throw a touchdown pass in the Superbowl. He can break tackles and has good vision in the openfield. Antwaan can turn 5-yard screens into 40 yard gains, and also has decent hands on deep balls. However, unlike Lloyd, he tends to be overthrown.

Fantasy Value

Has been traditionally one of the lower-ranked fantasy wideouts because of the offense in Pittsburgh and the presense of Hines Ward, and he returns to a very similar offense in Washington and a similar situation with Santana Moss. However, Randle-El has a knack for finding open spaces in defenses and teams will be sure to give Moss extra attention after his breakout season in '05. Randle-El will have better numbers with the Redskins than he did as a Steeler, but don't look for him in any Fantasy drafts. He may be worth a late-season waiver pickup if he maintains a starting role with Gibbs.

The Position Battle

Randle-El should slide comfortably into the second slot in Washington's offense, both because of his value as a short-yardage reciever and his willingness to block. At 5-10 he still lacks ideal size for a prototypical 'possesion guy,' but at 6-0, Lloyd doesn't offer a glaring alternative. Randle-El will also fare better at taking advantage of the double-teams and blanket coverages that Moss will recieve and exploiting them for large gains. Lloyd will most likely be used as a 'slot' reciever and as an effective change of pace to Randle-El in certain situations, but the #2 job will belong to Antwaan. There is also the possiblility that the Redskins could utilize the downfield speed of Moss and Lloyd at the edges and run a dedicated 3 wideout set fairly often.

Projected Statistics

Antwaan Randle-El

55 Receptions

800 Yards

4 Touchdowns

Brandon Lloyd

30 Receptions

550 Yards

2 Touchdowns

I'm amazed how much hype these guys seem to be getting. El is an FF turd and not much of an NFL WR either, really. Lloyd has his moments and shows some promise but is extremely inconsistent.

I think it's Moss, then Lloyd/Cooley as 2a, 2b, then the occasional token stuff by El.
