Zoo York
2006 Player Spotlight Series

Over the course of the offseason, we will be evaluating a multitude of players at every fantasy position. One such way we go about that is through the Player Spotlight series. Think of the Spotlights as a permanent record on some of the more intriguing players for the upcoming season. Each Spotlight will be featured in an article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Braylon Edwards, WR, Cleveland Browns

Player Page Link: Braylon Edwards Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide sustainable value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsBest of Luck and ENJOY!

Won't be a factor until at least midseason, and even then, not much of one. Certainly a guy Ill look to pick up cheaply in 2007 though.

40/520/4

Unless there's a change, it looks like Braylon is only going to play 10 games this year. I'm assuming it will take a week or two to get up to speed.

Somewhat ironically, in his rookie year, he started 7 games and played in 10, so the production should look similar for the year. He should improve some, but it's hard to determine at this point.

I like BE's potential, but can't expect much this year, I agree with Diesel that in a redraft, I'd look his way in 2007.

38/560/5

He won't see the field.

0/0/0
 he is scheduled to come back end of october after the bye week?

why do you think he won't see the field at all?
October is a long way away. I wouldn't be suprised if he doesn't make it back at all this year.Either way, I think he's irrelevant for fantasy football this season.

I have to agree with Hulk.Latest time table is OCT 22nd but I've heard NOV mentioned several times. You have to remember that his injury took place in DEC of last season so he won't even be a year removed from the injury until week #14. Lastly, in that division I can't understand why CLE would be too aggressive in bringing him back because while they had a very nice draft they should finish a distant 4th place. Why gamble with a talent like that when there's no real payoff?

He may play in close to 10 games but I don't think he gets nearly as much work as FBG is projecting for him. I think 20/250/1 will be closer to his season than the 36/482/3 FBG is projecting.

Doing a projection for BE now is almost useless. He's barely 6 months removed from his injury and they typically take 1 year. Could he be different? Sure, but the odds are against it. Given Cleveland's situation and the fact that he is their #1WR, I see no reason why Cleveland would want to rush him back. Current ADP has him at WR40 ahead of players like Key, Mark Clayton, Antonio Bryant... Unless training camp brings his injury into a whole different realm, he is really overvalued. I agree with the majority of the posters so far and see him as barely draftable in redrafts with current information.

24 catches, 260 yards, 2 TD's

The bolded part is spot on. With a deep enough league, i wouldn't mind stashing BE away, but to take him ahead of those 3, in a redraft? :loco:

The thing is that teams will take him late because he will be around during the playoff weeks. To take a small gamble that he will be back to performing at #2 WR numbers at the end of the season is worth a WR#4-5.

Definitely depends on your league and roster size whether he is worth a late round selection. If you have either large rosters or a large number of teams, you can do worse for guys that could come in and help down the stretch.

I imagine in most smaller leagues, he'll go undrafted or will be released after the first week or two when he is not playing. Keep an eye on his anticipated return date and if you need WR depth, grab him a week or two before his return. Well worth that investment.

Projections not so critical with him, but I'll guess he returns for the last eight games.

40 catches (5 per game) for 520 yards and 4 TDs

I'm not sure what to think about BE right now, but I'm not sold he'll be ready and explosive enough to post solid numbers this year... but this is pure speculation on my part right now.

Recs: 32

Yds: 455

TDs: 3

The recent news regarding BE is promising, but given the possiblity of lingering knee issues and the passing game of CLEV, I don't know if he is likely to post near 1000 yds this year. He has a ton of talent no doubt, but I don't think its all that likely this year.

Edit to add... if more good news comes in about BE, my projections for him will be bumped up.

According to Mr. Gray, Cleveland has the toughest schedule for wide receivers in 2006. Furthermore, the loss of Bentley might be greater than the previous two high-profile season-ending injuries in Winslow and Edwards. Bottomline, the Brown's passing game will have an uphill battle in 2006. If Edwards plays 10 games this year, I would expect 35 receptions, 500 yards and 3 touchdowns.

However, from a dynasty standpoint, if Braylon was in the 2006 draft, he would have been the first receiver taken. In his prime, he should average about 1000-1200 yards and 7-11 touchdowns per year. He should be a very good number two receiver for a long time. Grab him now while he is cheap if you can.

A buddy of mine called me after the BE news broke yesterday. He said it didn't shock him one bit. I asked why and he was like..."I didn't tell you?". I guess he ran into the QB coach for the Browns during dinner last weekend. He was chating with a few guys at the table about how excited he was for TC to be opening, LBC, everything....Topic shifts to BE and his eventual come back. My buddy is like...well he's supposed to come back Oct 1st. This guy sitting behind him says, "I highly doubt that". My buddy turns around and says, "What makes you say that?". He responds with, "Because I'm the QB coach for the Browns".

They ended up chatting for like 20 or so minutes. Guess the guys really nice and was totally cool shooting the proverbial s@@t for awhile. He goes on to tell him that BE was doing some impressive things in Berea, like cutting in stride, leaping, etc...That he was way ahead of where he should be and it was going to be hard to keep him out of TC. Braylon's foaming at the mouth and such.

My buddy also told me one other thing that was funny. I guess he was standing there with JJ watching KWII and he pulls this one handed grab at his toes without breaking stride. JJ turns and looks to the QB coach awe-struck and all he could say was "WTF?". Overall, the organization can't believe how good Kellen looks. He's dedicated.

I wish I would have heard about this last week caused I'd have posted it much sooner.

I'll stick to my first prediction.

He'll be back week 2

73 catches

1005 yards

6 TDs
I like your moxie. It takes juevos to predict that kind of season for Edwards THIS season, but it is a bit of a stretch. I think it's better to predict Edwards' PER GAME stats whenever he does come back, because predicting yearly totals with him sitting out an unumbered amount of games doesn't seem useful at all. Thus, if he's 90+ percent healthy, I see B.E. dropping the following per game average:

5/75/.5

If he plays a mere 8 games, that's 40 grabs for 600 yards and 4 TDs in a half season. In other words, he'll be the late season WR2 spark plug that my team will need!

The Browns are going to be very, very interesting this year. This is a well-coached club and its going to have a lot of opportunity.

After 5 weeks....

Player No Yds Avg Long TD

Braylon Edwards 20 351 17.6 75 1

My projections may have been a little low.
