2006 Player Spotlight Series

Over the course of the offseason, we will be evaluating a multitude of players at every fantasy position. One such way we go about that is through the Player Spotlight series. Think of the Spotlights as a permanent record on some of the more intriguing players for the upcoming season. Each Spotlight will be featured in an article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Chris Simms, QB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Player Page Link: Chris Simms Player Page

Each article will include:

[*]Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member

[*]Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads

[*]FBG Projections

[*]Consensus Member Projections

The Rules

In order for this thread to provide sustainable value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

[*]Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player

[*]Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"

[*]To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the player

Projections should include (at a minimum):

[*]For QBs: Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs

[*]For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs

[*]For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs

Best of Luck and ENJOY!

With Chris Simms as the primary passer, the Buccaneers managed only 3171 passing yards last season to go with a poor 17 passing TDs. The year prior, Brian Griese helped the Bucs achieve 3773 passing yards and 24 passing TDs. With that as a statistical window, third year quarterback Chris Simms should be somewhere in between in 2006.

If WR Michael Clayton produces at his rookie level (rather than his disappointing sophomore level), Simms could be closer to the top of his statistical window. But I am assuming a medium performance from Clayton in 2006, as well as a small decline from WR Joey Galloway's excellent 2005 statistics. I expect the Buccaneers to be primarily a running and defense team this season, with passing numbers ranked in the middle third of the league.

Chris Simms, QB TB

505 ATT, 305 COMP, 3335 YDS, 18 TD, 15 INT

25 RUSH ATT, 45 RUSH YDS, 0 RUSH TD

He's an interesting player going into 2006. Gruden loves him...got rid of Griese who was doing a fine job with the team.

I see Simms throwing for around 200-225 yds a game...this defense is still pretty stout and the Bucs are going to win a lot of 17-13, 20-17, 21-10 type games where the offense will basically need to hold a lead and not make a lot of mistakes.

Simms numbers in 2006: 3,400 passing, 20 TD passes and 10 interceptions.

"Cadillac" is in his 2nd season and will rush for a lot and with Alstott coming back you will see the Bucs drive the ball into the end zone from the 5 yd line...so I think many of their scores will come fromt he ground.

Galloway will get 6-8 TD receiving, Clayton another 5-7..a few to the TE position. Sounds about right.

Hmm...projecting Simms for me has a lot to do with the Bucs' defense, but unfortunetly I'm not 100% familier with it. Can anyone tell me if their defense is beginning to age or if they're still mostly in their primes? The only names form that D I really know are Brooks, Rice, and McFarland...

Last season Tampa Bay's defense was ranked No. 1 in the league in terms of yards allowed (277.8 per game; CHI was second with 281.8) and first downs allowed (15.9; DAL was second with 16.0). Tampa Bay was in a four-way tie for second best defense in terms of passing TDs allowed with 15 (tied with WAS, PIT, and CAR...behind CHI). Tampa Bay was in a four-way tie for seventh best defense in terms of rushing TDs allowed with 10 (tied with GB, PIT, and DEN...behind JAX, SEA, BAL, CHI, CAR, and IND). It appears their only starter lost in free agency was FS Dexter Jackson.Regarding the age of their defense:

DE Greg Spires = 32

DT Chris Hovan = 28

DT Booger McFarland = 29 (in December)

DE Simeon Rice = 32

SLB Ryan Nece = 27

MLB Shelton Quarles = 35

WLB Derrick Brooks = 33

CB Brian Kelly = 30

SS Jermaine Phillips = 27

FS Will Allen = 24

CB Ronde Barber = 31

So, yes, they're getting up there...but last year they showed they're still an elite unit.

Thanks for the info, Wade.

I'm going to assume that TB still has a top 5 defense next season....but not the best statistically again. I'm also going to assume that Clayton and Caddy Williams improve either a lot from last year (Clayton) or just a bit (Williams).

61% completion, 3,121 yards, 19 TD's, 10 INT's

That's my best guesstimate at his 2006 performance. On another note, if he plays up to that level and the players I thought will improve do, I could see TB as a really legit SB contender...

Your projections are so close to mine it is scary.305 Completions

500 Attempts

3335 Yards

17 TDs

17 INT

15 Carries

30 Yards

I think this defense limits Simms upside. He's a decent passer, with two pretty good weapons in Galloway and Clayton, but the pounding the ball mentality could take over with a very good running back (whom Gruden loves to overuse), and a good defense.

Galloway and Clayton should offset each other. Clayton's coming off of a horrid year, Galloway's coming off a career year. That should balance out.

Simms should improve...but slightly.

3150 yards passing, 18 TD, 13 INT. 58 yards rushing, 0 TD rushing.

I think he averages about 200 yards a game in this dink and dunk offense. For big plays, they depend upon Galloway's breakaway speed to take it to the house.

3200 yards passing, 18 td's and 18 int's

120 yards rushing, 1 td rushing and 3 fumbles

I'm not a big fan of Simms or really the TB O in general. I don't see any reason to upgrade him from last year other than he has another year in the system. I'm not very excited about the weapons surounding him other than Caddy and I think the strong D limits his need to pass.

425 atts, 243 comp, 3095 yds, 16 TDs, 15 Ints, rushing stats are meaningless

Chris Simms(TB):

Passing Yards - 3100

Passing TDs - 18

Ints - 12

Rush Yards - 60

Rush TDs - 1

I think I'm being generous...
