2006 Player Spotlight Series

Over the course of the offseason, we will be evaluating a multitude of players at every fantasy position. One such way we go about that is through the Player Spotlight series. Think of the Spotlights as a permanent record on some of the more intriguing players for the upcoming season. Each Spotlight will be featured in an article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Isaac Bruce, WR, St. Louis Rams

Player Page Link: Isaac Bruce Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

Disclaimer: Although not a Rams fan in the least, Bruce has long been one of my favorite NFL players.

With Martz no longer calling the shots in Stl and the emergence of Kevin Curtis, it may seem probable to many that Bruce will see a significant drop in his numbers (when looking at the last three years).

Although I think its reasonable to expect a decrease in the overall production of the Stl passing game now that Martz is gone, I don't think its safe to assume that Curtis will supplant Bruce as WR2 in Stl... not yet anyway.

Due to age, potential for injury, and a change in offesnsive scheme; I don't expect a 1000 yd season from Bruce, but feel he'll be solid in 06.

Figured I'd bump this... as I'd like to hear what a few others think about Bruce this year.
73 990 6I think Linehan's more conservative offense will turn Bruce into a sub 1000 yard performer, but a still servicable WR#2 in most fantasy leagues.

With some of the recent chatter about Kevin Curtis' outlook..let's untable the Bruce Spotlight. Would anyone feel comfortable starting the season with Bruce as your WR2 or WR3?

I just finished my No Mercy draft where I probably will use Bruce as a WR3 (at least to start the season until Matt Jones shows something). I ended up with RMoss, Burress, MJones, and Bruce (as the #41 WR taken). Given his ADP, he's cheap to obtain and certainly won't hurt as a WR3.

Or do you mean "conservative" as in more than Martz? I am not exactly sure that

Are you meaning to talk about how no Linehan WR2 has cracked 1k yards (save for Burleson in '04 by 6 yards when Moss was hurt).

that's assuming 1) he stays healthy,

and

2) Curtis doesn't start ahead of him, regardless of his health . . .

2) Curtis doesn't start ahead of him, regardless of his health . . .
This is the part that I am not understanding. I have not seen anywhere that there is any talk of Bruce losing his job or that there is a competition for the WR2 spot. It sounds nice that Curtis' fantasy owners are designating the job open, but I haven't seen the Rams say anything to that effect. Given wha tthe Rams shelled out already this year for Bruce, I don't even think there is a chance Curtis will get a shot to start.I see this as the same situation in IND . . . where are people saying that Stokley could start if he beats out Harrison? That's obviously not realistic.

what's unrealistic is that you are comparing Stokley to Curtis . . . Stokley is a SLOT guy, period, he has never thrived on the outside . . . Curtis did just fine as a #2 with Bruce out . . . Bruce is aging, at some point Curtis will take over; they slapped a 1st round tender when they couldve give him the 3rd rounder tag (like Minny did on Burleson) . . . Bruce will probably get cut after this year, and I am assuming they will resign Curtis . . . and last year, after Bruce came back, he didnt exactly light up the field . . .

A) My projections take into account injury riskB) Curtis will not be starting ahead of Bruce

happy, not thrilled as a WR3, assuming i was strong elsewhere. I've got him in the WR30-WR35 range.

I am seeing very little love for Bruce in drafts this past weekend. Seems like you can get him as a WR5 type player. Anybody care to chime in on what to expect from Bruce?

I have Bruce in several leagues and plan to start him until I see what happens with some of the other WR I picked up (some drafted sooner, some later). I think he will still be playable fantasy wise (at least in start 3 WR leagues). I'm not sure he hits 1,000 yards again but he should be close if healthy and should still get 5 or 6 TD.

Bump.

Isaac Bruce has not gotten much shark pool attention at all this year.

Is this guy getting over looked by to many fantasy owners this year?

For a guy that has seven 1000 yard seasons to his name and is not over the hill yet at 34 years of age he could be a great value play as he can be had for late. In fact even though he only had 21 catches in his rookie year and only played 5 games in 1997 and 11 games in 2005 he has still averaged in 12 seasons of play 68 catches a season and 1023 yards a year.

He had some injury problems last season, but if healthy I feel this guy is still a viable WR3 in 10 to 12 man leauges.

This guy has a good QB a great WR opposite of him and a good RB. He is the number 2 passing target in this offense and could surprise fantasy owners with a solid season.

What do you guys think?

I think my draft is on Thursday and I'd really appreciate it if people would keep forgetting about Bruce until Friday. :DHe remains a terrific value pick in my opinion. For a proven starter who has a very talented QB throwing the ball Bruce's ADP is ridiculous in my opinion. I think he'll be a rock-solid WR3 who will easily outperform his ADP this season barring injury.

Good luck getting him. I got him for late and feel he will be starting in many fantasy rosters before long. He probably is not even a bad play in week 1.

a bit off topic but... where can I find the master link list for all the 2006 Player Spotlight pages? Sorry to highjack, but I didn't want to post a new thread...

By golly I love it when a projection works out the way you guessed it to be. I got Bruce for super cheap like many others and have been very happy with his play as he is performing as a really nice WR 3.Bruce seemed to slip by many people because of his injury plagued year last season. This guy has been a consistent professional and I hope he continues to have a productive year.
