2007 Player Spotlight Series

Over the course of the offseason, we will be evaluating a multitude of players at every fantasy position. One such way we go about that is through the Player Spotlight series. Think of the Spotlights as a permanent record on some of the more intriguing players for the upcoming season. Each Spotlight will be featured in an article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Jake Delhomme, QB, Carolina Panthers

Player Page Link: Jake Delhomme Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide sustainable value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsBest of Luck and ENJOY!

This is yet another sign that a lot of ff owners have a "what have you done for me lately" mentality. Delhomme is just three seasons removed from passing for nearly 3,900 yards and 29 TDs. In fact before last year he had three straight seasons of at least 3,200 yards. Even though last season was the worst of delhomme's four years in carolina statiscally, he still completed 61.0 % of his passes and the 2,805 yards and 17 TD he threw would still be david carr's 2nd best season yardage wise and more TD's than carr has ever thrown in a season so I doubt that delhomme will lose the starting job as some ppl are speculating. Also over the course of his time in carolina delhomme has a respectable TD - INT ratio of 1.5 : 1 throwing a total of 89 TDs and 58 INTs. His lack of mobility is his biggest flaw: he averages only 55 yards rushing per season but it gets worse when you realize that includes an "amazing" 71 yards on the ground in 2005 and in the other three seasons delhomme had less than 27 rushing yards per season. However if there is a silver lining to be found it's that he has also rushed for a TD in three of his four year's as carolina's signal caller.

465 pass attempts, with a 60.5 completion percentage for 3,353 yards, 23 TDs and 15 INTs. 30 rushing yards and 1 TD

Everyone was high on Delhomme last year but I wasnt. To me this will always be a run first team with a strong defense. The one great year he had was because Carolina basically stunk and had a horrible defense due to injuries and was always throwing from behind. And maybe Delhomme was hurt by Smith's injury in the 1st 2 games but he never seemed to take off despite having 2 stud WRs. Now they lose Keyshawn and still have 2 very good RBs. I just cant see Delhomme putting up Qb1 #s but Id love to grab him as my backup QB. Hes a better NFL QB than fantasy QB. Im not too worried about Carr taking over because I think Delhomme is a winner and will get the job done.

3300 yds, 19 tds, 11 ints

Carolina may or may not be a run first team but in 2004 delhomme attempted 536 passes, 9th in the NFL, and last year he attempted 33.2 passes per game which was the 6th most in the league

Look for improvement.

1. Expect more yards simply on screens and dump offs to D. Williams.

2. The offense was awful on 3rd downs. This is mostly due to luck. An improvement in this category to the league average will lead to longer drives, more yards, more scoring, better fantasy performance.

3. I think Carr will push Delhomme to play better.

I would be very happy with Delhomme as my #2. I think he will surprise he will outperform his ADP easily.

Delhomme pllayed in all sixteen games in 03-05 and averaged 3504 passing yds and 24 passing TDs. He finished 15th, 7th, and 12th among fantasy QBs. He was not studly, but he was solid. In 2006, he missed three games and did not perform quite as well when he played.

His ypa fell to a Carolina low of 6.5 after averaging 7.5. His TDs fell to 17 after averaging 24. But, his passing yardage remained 216 per game after averaging 219. Not that much of a drop.

Off season activities had Keyshawn retiring and the Panthers adding David Carr. Both of the these actions will make Delhomme's ADP drop. He is currently being drafted at 116 and QB20. This for a guy that had his percentage complete increase to 61.0% last season and has Steve Smith as his top target. The Carolina line had severe injury problems last season as well.

If Delhomme can hold off Carr for the starting gig in Carolina, he is a great pick at QB 20. Another exercise patience and be rewarded guy. Grab Carr as insurance a round or two late. Carolina is not the running team that is perceived. Play calling was close to 50/50 split in 05 and about 58/42 passing last year.

Delhomme holds off Carr all year (75% chance) and achieves:

270 comps for 450 attempts (60.0%) for 3330 yds (7.4 ypa) 22 TDs and 16 ints, he adds 20 yds rushing and one TD.

Just a quick FYI folks...Delhomme won three consecutive playoffs (two on the road) in 03 and two road playoff games in 05. You don't bench a guy like that for David Carr.

Delhomme represents value this year. 3400-24-16 via air, 30-1 on the ground

And you don't bring in a guy like David Carr if you're totally confident in how your current QB is playing. Carr is no aging veteran that is being brought in to help Delhomme learn anything. He's being brought in learn that system and eventually compete for that starting position if Delhomme struggles like he did last year.Delhomme will get the first shot and if he plays well, you are right BB...he will represent value. No way they pull him if he's playing well. But don't fool yourself, with Carr on the team, Delhomme's leash is a lot shorter than it was last year.3200 yards passing, 19 tds and 12 Int's48 yards rushing, zero tds

No, you bring in Carr when your backup Weinke is so bad that DeAngelo comes in to play QB on 3rd down about a dozen times. Carr came here to collect a paycheck for a few years without getting the snot knocked out of him on a weekly basis. Good teams like Philly have a serviceable backup in case diaster strikes.

Exactly. There is no "QB controversy" here and Delhomme's leash isn't as short as many seem to think. Carr make take over, but not this year.My biggest concern is the lack of options beyond Smith and short dump-offs to the RB. I see an 05 kinda year for him (maybe a bit less) and a very fine QB2, even a QB1 if you wait long enough.

:crickets:Is it just because everyone thinks Carr will take over by midseason?
The only reason Carr would be taking over (barring injury) is because Carolina would want a shot at Brohm or some other NFL caliber QB (which carr is not). Carr could get them that shot with his inability to play QB.

If Delhomme plays as bad as he did last year and IF the Panthers find their playoff hopes dwinding in the process, Delhomme will be benched. I am quite sure of that........the question is does Delhomme return to form. If he does....then he's the guy and Carr won't take over. If he doesn't, they'll bring in Carr to see what he can do. I don't know why people think Delhomme will be allowed to play poorly and be the starter.

With all the negativity I'm reading around about Jake, I'm liking him as a buy low for sure.

I think he'll go 3000+/22/15 easily.

 That game at Atlanta last year was so embarrassing, even with the Panthers winning. Weinke was just awful. I think Jake will have a much better year this year. He didn't play bad in every game last year, but when he did play poorly it wasn't all his fault. The offensive line suffered multiple injuries in game one, and the line that was patched together struggled all year long. Jake was rushed constantly, and some of the play-calling was very questionable. I think Jake will bounce back just fine.
