2006 Player Spotlight Series

Over the course of the offseason, we will be evaluating a multitude of players at every fantasy position. One such way we go about that is through the Player Spotlight series. Think of the Spotlights as a permanent record on some of the more intriguing players for the upcoming season. Each Spotlight will be featured in an article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Jerry Porter, WR, Oakland Raiders

Player Page Link: Jerry Porter Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide sustainable value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsBest of Luck and ENJOY!

Porter appears to have fallen through the cracks, but he shouldn't have. The all powerful Oakland offense never materialized last year as both Porter and Randy Moss fell well short of expectations. While I've never viewed Porter as an elite player, he still managed a respectable 26th place finish last year and could improve upon that (he's scored 9 TDs twice in his career) if his scoring chances increase.

Whether you're a Porter supporter or not, his situation bears close scrutiny. Is Randy Moss healthy? Can Aaron Brooks reignite the passing attack? Does Art Shell and his old school coaching staff have the work ethic and committment to craft an innovative game plan for the new millenium?

Porter's current ADP is WR33, a ranking he's surpassed three of the last four years (he missed time in 2003). THat suggests value, it's really a question of whether it's marginal value or substantive value.

Thoughts?

There is a lot of uncertainity surrounding Porter which is why I would generally choose to pass and let someone else take him.

I left a post on this board a few days ago about a story were Art Shell threw Porter out of his office during their get to know you meeting. The story did go on to say that Porter participated in team activities in May but since that time I know he was one of the few players on the team who skipped some recent OTA's.

Add to this Tim Brown saying today that one of the problems with the Raiders is that Jerry Porter is unhappy with camp about to begin.

I would not worry about it so much if the Raiders third and fourth WR's were marginal talents but Gabriel and especially a healthy Curry are talented. I could see a situation if Porter mopes that he either loses his starting job or is dealt if the Raiders can afford the salary cap hit.

Interesting, how far did Art Shell throw him?

Here is what I read about the Porter and Shell meeting in a Contra Costa Times Q&A with the Raider beat writer:

QI RECENTLY READ THAT ART SHELL THREW JERRY PORTER OUT OF HIS OFFICE DURING A MEETING OF THE TWO. CAN YOU SHED ANY LIGHT ON WHAT THIS WAS ABOUT? COULD HE POSSIBLY HAVE WANTED MR. PORTER TO PRODUCE ON A CONSISTENT BASIS AND BECOME A TEAM PLAYER? THANKS.

RAIDERS#13, CASTLEWOOD, VA 5/12/06

ARaiders#13, I am the writer who reported that incident. Yes, Art Shell threw wide receiver Jerry Porter out of his office after a get-to-know-you meeting turned confrontational. Porter doesn't take criticism too well and despises being told what to do. However, he soon learned that he won't be able to push around Shell the way he and others did Bill Callahan and Norv Turner. Shell told Porter what he expects from him and how things are going to be around Raidersland now that he is in charge. Porter's options are to conform or risk being traded. Porter looked great at minicamp and appears on board for now. However, he is prone to sulking and grumbling if he feels as if he isn't getting enough passes thrown his way. So, Shell likely will have to get on Porter from time to time and make him realize that he isn't bigger than the team. Take care. Sincerely, Steve.

That's great stuff menobrown  . Thanks for digging that up.I personally see this working for Porter rather than against him. Maybe Shell thinks he knows how to get the best out of Porter and thats by taking him out of his comfort zone. Could be a my way or the highway approach as well.

I'm one of 3 staffers who have him inside their top 30 WRs, which as Jason pointed out is where he has ranked in 3 of the last 4 years.

Just curious to see why those who don't think he'll be top 30 have that view?

Do you think Curry or Gabriel will eat into his time?

Maybe Porter has reached his ceiling?

Porter and Brooks have worked well together so far, I think he's nice value at this stage.

Porter is a tough one for me to get a handle on... I think he has the talent to post some very good numbers, but for some reason seems to fall a bit short. With Randy Moss and LaMont Jordan being the focal points of the offense I don't believe Porter will bust out in 06. And for some reason, my gut instinct is that Brooks will lock onto Moss this year.

Recs: 60

Yds: 820

TDs: 5

70 catches, 910 yards, 7 TD's.

My concern with Porter is his tendency to disappear for stretches. He has shown the ability to have dominant weeks, but rarely strings together the kind of games that help fantasy owners win. His numbers look good for a WR #3, but if he's getting all those points in three weeks, how much help is that?

Jerry Porter...his third QB in in three years....tough to build up consistency. Then always plays second fiddle to great WRs (Moss, Rice, Brown). Seems to always have a nagging injury to boot.

I don't see much change in Porter's game plan. A healthy Moss could help take some pressure off him, so he could have an increase in his numbers. Then again, a healthy Moss could mean that Porter does not get the ball as much. Moss has something to prove so I am going to lean towards the latter.

| 2004 oak | 64 998 15.6 9 TDs

| 2005 oak | 76 942 12.4 5 TDs

2006: 70, 850 yds, 6 TDs

Last year the Raiders made a number of offensive changes and the majority of the time it showed. The potential to be very good is there, now they just need to put it all together.

Oakland was ranked 10th in the NFL in passing yards per game. I look for them to improve upon that ranking with a healthy Moss and Porter all year.

Porter is an interesting one with lots of vairiables to consider. Can he stay healthy? What will the new HC's impact be? How well will Brooks play? Can Moss stay healthy and what is the impact if he does or doesn't? All these questions make me very hesitant to even project Porter, but I'll try regardless:

74 rec, 1015 yds, 6 TDs

Curry is more talented, but seems to have an achilles tendon made of tissue paper. I'm not a fan of the Raiders' passing offense this year at all as the transition from Brooks to Walter won't be pretty. Moss is still option 1, 2, and 3.

From xpertsports via ESPN:

Raiders Looking To Deal WR?

Sources close to the Raiders indicate that WR Jerry Porter isn't the happiest camper with the way new head coach Art Shell has pushed for more discipline. The Raiders have dangled Porter as trade bait in the past, so it wouldn't come as a complete surprise for Oakland to shop him if things don't go well early on.
