2006 Player Spotlight Series

Over the course of the offseason, we will be evaluating a multitude of players at every fantasy position. One such way we go about that is through the Player Spotlight series. Think of the Spotlights as a permanent record on some of the more intriguing players for the upcoming season. Each Spotlight will be featured in an article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Keenan McCardell, WR, San Diego Chargers

Player Page Link: Keenan McCardell Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide sustainable value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsBest of Luck and ENJOY!

Five days after the initial post and no coments? He gets no comments, he gets no attention, and his ADP continues to slide. Oh yes, Rivers is taking over and the Chargers offense will stagnate and focus on LT and LT alone.

I think that McCardell spells B-A-R-G-A-I-N this year. I see Rivers outperforming his slot and no just on dump offs to LT and Gates. I think the Chargers offense remains effective and McCardell is part of that success.

His 6/30 ADP is 119 and he's being selected on average as the WR40. He is FBG's projected WR36 in a tight group and I could see him slipping into the WR25 range. Nice.

70 catches for 940 yards and 8 TDs.

Currently you can get Keenan in around the 11th round. Pretty solid for a guy who was the #1 WR on his team last year with 70/917/9. Problem is I don't believe he is the #1 receiving option on his team, prolly not #2 either as Gates and LT occupy those spots. Guess what, he may not have been last year either. Now, Rivers enters into the equation. This board has discussed at length the impact Rivers will have on LT, Gates and the whole SD offense. Keenan is up there in age (36 I think) with younger guys hoping to step up (Parker and Jackson). I think Parker may hold the best value of this group and I think Keenan slides back from last year while the other WR's step up and the whole SD offense drops a little. The SD offense has emerged as top 10 offense over the last 3 years, but the passing offense has been middle of the pack at best--it is the rushing O that has spearheaded that move (top 10 or better all 3 times). I believe that Marty will try and be a little conservative with the playbook to keep the pressure off Rivers--at least early on and this means a little more reliance on the rushing game coupled with a less productive SD offense as a whole and I get:

58 rec. 750 yards 6 TD's

I am projecting a small dip in passing yds and TDs for SD this year. McCardell will be the most productive SD WR, but I also look for Gates and Tomlinson to be oft-targeted by Rivers.

Recs: 60

Rec Yds: 755

TDs: 5
