2007 Player Spotlight Series

Over the course of the offseason, we will be evaluating a multitude of players at every fantasy position. One such way we go about that is through the Player Spotlight series. Think of the Spotlights as a permanent record on some of the more intriguing players for the upcoming season. Each Spotlight will be featured in an article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Randy McMichael, TE, St. Louis Rams

Player Page Link: Randy McMichael Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide sustainable value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsBest of Luck and ENJOY!

I can't see more than 40 to 45 recs, just too many passing options. I do think he will steal a couple of TDs away makin his total from 3 too 5.

I have never been a McMichael fan and am still not this year. He has to compete with Jackson, Holt, Bruce, and Bennett for receptions. Just dont see it. Of course many will probably reach for him as a sleeper TE because he plays in a great offense for his old offensive coordinator. I just dont see it happening.

45 rec, 550 yds, 3 tds

he'll take some receptions away from sjax, and perhaps bruce. he'll struggle to post decent numbers in a crowded field. he's still the best TE the rams have had in a long time (ever?) as long as he dosn't beat up any women, he should have an ok year.

52 550 10.6 5

Bump...McMichael is an interesting character. Like many tight ends (save for the truly elite), he's been inconsistent game to game. But his overall productivity was rock solid. He's never missed a game, and finished 9th, 8th, 5th, 8th and 11th in his five seasons.

For a guy you can likely draft late, I like that pedigree. Add to that the prolific passing attack in St. Louis AND the fact Scott Linehan went out and got McMichael after knowing exactly what kind of player he is (having coached him in Miami), I don't see how we can't assume McMichael will be oft targeted.

I think people get hung up by the Rams other receiving options. Yes, Holt + Bruce + Bennett + Jackson = almost impossible for McMichael to deliver a surprise top-5 finish again, but there should also be plenty of opportunitis for Randy to make play in the belly of the defense; which is all he needs to deliver another top-10 season.

Randy McMichael has played in all 16 games for the past five seasons for Miami so he is reliable. His stats over the past three seasons:

McMichael 04 116 targets 73 catches (62.9%) for 791 yds and 4 TDs finished 5th among TEs

McMichael 05 105 targets 60 catches (57.1%) for 582 yds and 5 TDs finished 8th among TEs

McMichael 04 96 targets 62 catches (64.6%) for 640 yds and 3 TDs finished 11th among TEs

Pretty solid numbers and catch percentage, but low on the TDs, while at Miami. He moves on to St Louis, an even more prolific passing team, but one where the TE has historically NOT been well utilized.

In the past five seasons the leading TE for St Louis was:

02 Conwell 34 receptions for 419 yds and 2 TDs

03 Manumawhatever 29 receptions for 238 yds and 2 TDs

04 Manuagain 15 receptions for 174 yds and 1 TD

05 Manuagain 13 receptions for 129 yds and 1 TD

06 Klopfenstein 20 receptions for 226 yds and 1 TD

That is quite a history of non-usage for the TE position. Even Dodds has them projected at almost double last season, but still low numbers for McMichael because they still have both of the rookie TEs that were drafted last year in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. There should be quite a bit of sharing time at TE and even if they more than double the TE usage, there is not enough opportunity for fantasy success. That is why McMichael will be available late.

My projection for McMichael 55 targets and 30 receptions for 320 yards and 2 TDs

So we are now 3 games into the pre-season and I don't think I've seen RM's name in the box score yet. Is he hurt? Is he in the dog house? Has he been demoted to 2nd string? Any St. Louis homers have any info on this guy? TIA. I have him as my back-up to Witten but am starting to wonder if I should be searching the WW right now.

Same here. I don't remember him seeing any targets last game w/o Holt. I'll wait to see the 1st week or two of the regular season since you can't trust your eyes in the preseason. Too many coaching games.
