Zoo York
2006 Player Spotlight Series

Over the course of the offseason, we will be evaluating a multitude of players at every fantasy position. One such way we go about that is through the Player Spotlight series. Think of the Spotlights as a permanent record on some of the more intriguing players for the upcoming season. Each Spotlight will be featured in an article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Reuben Droughns, RB, Cleveland Browns

Player Page Link: Reuben Droughns Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide sustainable value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsBest of Luck and ENJOY!

305 rushes/1250 yards/8 tds

35 receptions/225 yards/3 tds

**this is if he gets no legal ramifications from his little problem**

It seems like Droughns is a popular sleeper pick on this board. While Droughns has been light on TDs the past two seasons (8 total) he's quietly been over 1200 yards in each season. Considering the talent surrounding him in Cleveland last year that is a heck of an accomplishment. I am still a bit skeptical about having Droughns as a RB2. I think Charlie Frye's development has/will hurt Droughns numbers significantly. Look at last year, in 11 games with Dilfer, Droughns produced:

211 carries for 941 yards (4.5 AVG) 2TDs

31 receptions for 300 yards (9.7 AVG)

In 5 games started by Frye, Droughns produced:

98 carries for 291 yards (3.0 AVG) 0 TDs

8 catches for 69 yards (8.6 AVG)

Teams will certainly make Droughns their #1 priority and I'm not sure he has enough talent to overcome that.

My prediction:

256 carries for 870 yards, 5 TD

32 receptions for 256 yards.

I see Droughns having another very solid season, but I think that his workload will be decreased a bit and another RB or two will get worked into the mix more in 2006. I think that if Droughns' carries are cut to 260-270 then he may have more in the tank at the end of the year and be able to keep his YPC a bit higher (in 2005, his final 5 games totaled 98 rushes for 291 yards... 2.97 YPC, but it was against some tough D's too).

My projection:

Rush Yds: 1100

Rush Tds: 5

Recs: 30

Rec Yds: 235

Rec Tds: 1

Reuben is the one guy that you just can't project. I've done projections for every other guy so far except for him, and it'll probably stay that way. I simply refuse to even try with him, as theres no point.

If you want to knock Droughns for Cleveland's talent around him or Frye's development that's cool, but seriously Suggs, Green, and Harrison are nothing but bit players in this league and won't take carries from Droughns in the near future.

1200 yds 7 TDs

200 yds receiving 2 TDs

I completely agree with the fact that there is no RB on CLE that will take away a big amount of carries from Rueb. That said, he will improve upon his numbers from last year with the chance that Kellen comes back, and the additions of Shaffer (OT) and #00 LeCharles. With the run game plan still in place, RD's projections: 303 att, 1273 yds, 4.2 avg, 5td, 36 rec, 320 yd, 1 td. He should be 10-20 in the RB's but just lacks speed and a good enough offense to get him more TDs. Frye should be good, but he will not be good enough yet to keep the pressure off him.

I understand the concern over the way his numbers dropped off under Frye, but seriously, how far does Frye have to go between his 1st and 2nd years to get to where Dilfer was?And even if Frye isnt where Dilfer was, do the offseason acquisitions of Bentley and Shaffer not do wonders for Droughns? How about Winslow returning to the lineup?

All in all, I think alot more has gone right for Droughns than has gone poorly.

Id expect numbers similar to last year, as they face a tougher schedule this year, and I think the other teams in their division have improved on run D.

I expect to have staff member, Jeff Pasquino, post in here about one of his favorite players soon ....

Rube's production was supressed last year because he was the main threat.

Cleveland added Joe Jurevicius, improved the O-line, and has their TE back (again).

Edwards not being ready hurts, but here's an interesting comparison:

Eli Manning in 2004

Charlie Frye in 2005

Not saying they are a match - but interesting stat / development comparisions.

Rube will get his 1200 yards and add in 8 TDs on the ground.

I also see something in the neighborhood of 40 catches for another 350 yards and a TD.

The TDs will come as the goal line D cannot just put 8-9 in the box and force the Browns to do something else.

Since today seems to be the day we reflect on our preseason projections, I wish I'd have been harder on Droughns. This O was a mess coming into the year and Droughns was one of the least talented starting RBs in the NFL. This was actually one of the easier calls...his final numbers:220/758, 4 TD27 recpts for 169 yards

Just an update on Droughns. I did a little reading since I have Droughns sitting on a dynasty roster and was wondering if this guy will have any value with the signing of Jamal Lewis. If you read up on the Browns team news on the FBG news site there is an article talking about how the Browns are looking to trade Droughns. He is due a roster bonus on March 17 and if the club does not trade him he may be released. I just wanted to throw this out to the readers in the shark pool. Droughns value is still really low but if you want to hang onto a glimmer of hope maybe Droughns gets traded or released and finds a team where he can get some playing time.

I think it would be very likely that Droughns could land in a spot being somewhat of a RBBC guy for teams that have still not filled a hole.

Green Bay - Insurance if Morency does not pan out.

Giants - In case Jacobs can't handle the job full time

Buffalo - If the Chris Brown signing does not happen (I don't think it's official)

Indy - To replace Rhodes (not as likely)

Titans - To help out with LenDale White

I think the Titans would be an excellent fit. Droughns is known as a good locker room guy, and could help White along. I think he's also a good blocker, which is important to protect VY.

Tennessee may be a spot, but Droughns is a plodder and the teams you listed...those guys aren't exactly sped backs.I see NYG drafting a speed merchant or trading for one...I really thought Rhodes would end up there....
