2006 Player Spotlight Series

Over the course of the offseason, we will be evaluating a multitude of players at every fantasy position. One such way we go about that is through the Player Spotlight series. Think of the Spotlights as a permanent record on some of the more intriguing players for the upcoming season. Each Spotlight will be featured in an article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Roy Williams, WR, Detroit Lions

Player Page Link: Roy Williams Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide sustainable value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs

Roy hasn't enjoyed an elite season yet. Of course, considering the coaching staff, supporting cast, etc., it's not difficult to see why. From a fantasy perspective, things have improved significantly. Whether that results in a big season for Roy remains to be seen. He is one of those fringe WR1s that I have had the hardest time projecting. Where I have little doubt is in the belief that he is the clear #1 WR in Detroit.

With some reasonable consistency at the QB position Roy should put up good, but not great fantasy stats, with the impact coming in TD production. Having started his career with consecutive 8 TD seasons, it is reasonable to suggest that, if healthy, he should approach double digit TDs. My early line is:

1,050 yards

10 TDs

That should put him right around the 10th or 11th spot among WRs.

:goodposting: Sums up my thinking, although I think he'll do better.80 / 1200 / 10

69/850/9 is where i would put him..Dont know about the QB or the new system but i dont think he will start all 16.

Quite frankly, I don't think he'll start all 16 either. My projection was based on him starting a full season. He has missed a start or two in each of his first two seasons. Not a tragedy if you're in a head-to-head league and can afford to cover him when he's out. Based on missing a game or two, your numbers are pretty much right on.

No matter how many games his misses, Roy Williams isnt going to average just 12 ypc.

Was referring to the yards and TDs. I'll try to remember to do the YPC math next time. ;)

Im not sure how you can project yards without looking at ypc.if you think hes only going to get 800-850 yards, that means around 55-60 catches. Is that realistic for the far and away #1 Wr in a Mike Martz offense?

Until Mike Martz has a QB who can make the reads, make the throws, and take the hits, it might be optimistic to base WR numbers on Martz's previous WRs in St. Louis.

If Roy Williams stays healthy, I think he'll catch 70-80 balls, no more. That should still put him in the WR10 range, given that he will have 1100-1200 yards with that.

Also, in recent years receivers in Martz system had their numbers inflated by a propensity to abandon the running game. I doubt Marinelli is on board with that unless KJ bombs and no one else (say, Calhoun) is able to pick up the slack.

This is the same guy that made Warner into a League MVP and SB champ and turned Bulger into a pro-bowler. He also took Trent Green from being a career bench warmer to starter in his stint with the Rams. How has that turned out for the Rams? There is a reason that the Lions passed on Leinert at 9. Seems like a perfect fit. Young WR's, young RB, add Leinert and this team could be a dynasty on offense for years....

But they passed and grabbed a linebacker that has had 5 concussions, but that's another story. They passed because they expect Mad Mike to work his magic on the guys they have. One of the Lions current QB's is going to blow up. He won't be Warner of 99 but he will be a really good QB.

Definitely has the talent when he can stay on the field.I'm a "Prove it to me first" kind of guy when it comes to WR's however.

I think Roy Williams is one of the most overrated WR's out there now. People are looking at this guy in the 3rd round where I wouldn't touch him before the 6th.
